UTU TURNITIN INTEGRITY FOR THE STUDENTS
UTU Moodle includes to the Turnitin Integrity plug-in, which recognises texts’ similarities with the internet and publication contents in the database of the Turnitin system.
This supplementary feature can be used in:
- Assignment activities
- Forum activities
- Workshop activities
This plug-in is a less extensive version of the Turnitin Feedback Studio system, which however uses the same reference database.
If you have declined the EULA (in which case the work is only stored in Moodle) and Turnitin check is a requirement for passing the course, you can later approve the conditions when saving a work. After that, your work will be forwarded to Turnitin check.
The approval itself is technically compatible in all activities of Integrity. When you accept it in one assignment, it can be used in all activities of the Moodle server in question after that.
Open the workshop or assignment where you have or are about submit a work. You will see the following text: <>

Open a discussion forum where you are participating and have or are about submit a work. Start a new discussion or reply to an already started one and click “Advanced and attachments” underneath the message field.
Or edit a message you have already sent to a discussion.
You will see a similar view on accepting the agreement as in workshops or assignments. After the EULA has been approved, you will see the following:
Turnitin Integrity in Moodle activities
After submission / replying to a forum message, its status will the “Queued” for a while. After that, the status is “Pending”. Finally, you will see a percentage value for the similarity the work. The teacher can decide whether the student sees the similarity report or not. The general recommendation of the University of Turku is that the students are allowed to see the reports on their own texts.
If the EULA acceptance is missing (see above), your submission will not be forwarded to the Turnitin Integrity check. The University's policy is that the student has a subjective right to decline the electronic checking of the submission. In these cases, the teacher will complete the checking manually and may set a longer duration for the checking stage. It may reflect on the progress of studies. Students may not decline the Turnitin check of theses.
In an assignment,
the visibility of the report depends on the settings defined by the teacher. You can see the report:
- when the due date has passed
- immediately and when the due date has passed
- you will not see it
Open the similarity report by clicking the percentage value if the teacher has allowed the students to see it. It can be either an online text or a file (.pdf or .docx text file from MS Word, .odt text file from LibreOffice or txt text file).
In a forum,
you will see the similarity reports of each of your posts. Open the similarity report by clicking the percentage value if the teacher has allowed the students to see it. The text of each message and the text of the attachment file will be checked separately. You will not be able to see other students’ reports.
In a workshop,
you will see the report of your own work in the submission stage and the reports of your own and the peer-evaluated works in the evaluation stage. The visibility depends on the settings defined by the teacher:
- You will see your own work’s report immediately and the reports of your own and the peer-evaluated work when the due date has passed.
- You will not see the reports at all

The online texts and the texts of attachment file will be checked separately. You will only be able to see the reports of your own work and the peer-evaluated work in student role.

Click the similarity percentage of either the forum message or the submitted file, depending on which similarity report you want to examine.

1. Open the workshop activity.
2. Click the name of the submission.
3. On the page that opens, you can examine the similarity report by clicking the similarity percentage of either the online text or the submitted file, depending on which similarity report you wish to examine.
