Grading & Feedback

Most scenarios missing so far.

During or even after grading, a teacher may get (and need to store in the application) metadata about the exam or about questions

  • as feedback from students (or even from other teachers or staff),
  • or as a result of analysis, for example: “This question was not answered probably by most students, check wording?”.

Mack Marketing

When creating the exam, Mack has created template answers for each of the questions, so that he has some kind of a measurement what things need to be mentioned in the answer in order to reach a specific grade. He also still works on the template answers from time to time when he discovers that something is not quite accurate or is missing.

In order to keep his grading fair, he does a lot of comparing different students' answers side-by-side.

Grading is also deeply intensive work that Mack thinks he needs to do in one sitting, as uninterrupted as possible, in order to keep the grading just.

The qualitative feedback may include comments about a student's progress, for example: "you seem to now have sufficient understanding of this topic, you have reached the goals, it is now time to move on - however, you might want to still quickly check out topic X to make it rock solid".

Harvey Historian

Harvey sees grading as a problematic issue - on the other hand, he needs to give something that is comparable between the years, but in the end, learning is unique and, basically it is very hard to justly take conceptually complex essay answers and put them into smaller pieces, of which points can be given to build up a total grade for a question.

Grace Grader

Grace has been given the task to grade the answers to an exam according to an answer template. That is, with each question, she has clearly defined criteria, according to which to grade the answer. Due to this, this answer template - question metadata - that comes with the question, is critical for doing the grading, since Jill is not a professional in the subject field herself.
