Groups management

Groups are great. Especially now we have greater power with cohorts.

But core Moodle has no student self-signup for Groups. This is quite a big omission in terms of an LMS that aspires to be constructivist. Also, this creates problems for any large enrolment course and especially MOOCs, as we saw with both Nellie and Mary's MOOCs. The major distributions all have this functionality.

One key Moodle.org forum conversation is here: https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=262635 - where we saw the emergence of the term ethnico-racial/social mixity/integration https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=262635#p1138248 and one statement of a wild plan to change permissions to enable students to join groups.

Tracker Item

https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-13962

I'm quite surprised at the low number of votes for this. According to this item there was talk of getting this into 1.4: https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/CONTRIB-1273

Plugins

  1. Group choice: https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=mod_choicegroup (Up to date with version for Moodle 2.7)
  2. Link to another probably outdated option: https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=262635#p1138275

Managing group naming (etc)

If you randomly autocreate groups there is no simple way in coder Moodle to re-name them with sensible names. I think there is a plugin to do this.
