Quiz Quest is an activity that turns questions from a question bank into a quest. Questions appear one at a time in a chat-like dialogue; each correct answer moves the student one step closer to the end, and the quest is complete when they reach the number of steps the teacher set. It uses the same game interface as AI Escape Room, with a question bank in place of the AI, so no AI provider is needed.
Installation
Install the plugin from the Moodle plugins directory, or download the ZIP file and follow Installing plugins. The files go in the folder mod/quizquest. The plugin supports Moodle 5.0 to 5.3.
You need a question bank with a category of multiple choice (one right answer) and/or short answer questions.
How it works

Each turn, one question is drawn at random from the category:
- Multiple choice questions (with one right answer) appear as buttons, in random order.
- Short answer questions take a typed answer, which is checked with the question's own rules (including case sensitivity and
*wildcards).
Questions the student has never been asked come first, then questions not yet asked in this attempt, then any others. A correct answer adds one step. Optionally, a wrong answer takes one step away (never below zero). The feedback of the matched answer is shown in the dialogue; if it has none, a short message is shown ("Correct! You move a step closer to your goal." or "Not quite."), or one of the teacher's generic responses.
Students click Start Quest to begin. Continue resumes an attempt where they left it, with the whole dialogue, and Quit attempt ends it early. A button at the top right shows the game in full screen.
Settings

Timing
- Open the quest and Close the quest: optional dates, shown on the course page and in the calendar. Attempts still in progress at the close date are ended automatically, as if the student had quit.
Game settings
- Question bank: any question bank in the course, or a bank shared with the course or the site that you can use. Choosing a bank updates the category list.
- Question category: the category the questions are drawn from.
- Include questions from subcategories
- Steps to complete (1 to 100): how many correct answers complete the quest.
- Maximum attempts: a number, or Unlimited.
- Wrong answers subtract a step
- Show progress: show students the progress bar.
- Allow student review: students can read their finished attempts again under My attempts.
- Partial score on quit: students who quit early get a grade in proportion to the steps they reached.
- Progress images: optional pictures shown beside the dialogue. With several images, the first shows at the start and the next appears each time the student completes an equal share of the steps; the last appears at the end. They are shown in file name order.
Step narrative text
- Text of your own that appears in the dialogue when a correct answer brings the student to a given step: Text before feedback appears just before that turn's feedback, Text after feedback just after it. Step 0 is the opening: both texts appear one after the other before the first question. Use it to tell a story as the student progresses.
Generic responses
- Correct-answer responses and Incorrect-answer responses: pools of short responses. Each turn, a response that has not been used yet is drawn at random from the right pool; when all have been used, the pool starts again.
- Display generic responses: Only when question feedback is absent, Never, Before question feedback or After question feedback.
The activity also has the standard grade and completion settings.
Grades and completion
A completed attempt gets the full grade, which goes to the gradebook. A quit or expired attempt gets a partial grade only if Partial score on quit is on. With automatic completion, the activity has its own condition, Complete the quest, and the usual grade-based conditions work too.
For teachers
Teachers and managers can play the quest themselves. These preview attempts are kept apart from the students': they do not count towards attempt limits, grades or completion. The activity page shows teachers how many attempts students have made and how many were completed.
The course reset page has Delete all Quiz Quest attempts.

Privacy
The plugin stores each student's attempts (status, progress and times) and the answers they gave. It implements the Privacy API, so this data is included in data exports and deletion requests. See Data privacy.
