The following are examples of course grading descriptions that use Extra Credit. Each strategy should be possible within Moodle in a way that is intuitive to teachers without special training, and the computations should be natural and obvious. Ideally they simply enter the extra points to an existing activity or to a special extra credit activity.

Note that I don't always use Extra Credit in my classes, but when I do, it has these characteristics.

  • Software Development: Spring 2009. Teacher: Gary Anderson

Grading: Grading in this course is very simple. One Friday of each week you will write a reflection in Moodle on the work you have done, the successes and challenges you have had, and your plan for moving forward. This assignment is worth 10 points each week. In addition, you may earn a small number of extra credit points by doing work that clearly goes beyond the requirements of the course and is in addition to all assigned tasks. Make sure you clearly document and justify this additional effort to qualify for extra credit.

  • Advanced Algebra: Spring 2009. Teacher: Gary Anderson

Grading: 60% of your term grade is for daily work which including regular homework assignments, projects, participation, and other activities. 40% of your grade is for quizzes and tests. You may earn an additional 10 Extra-Credit points each week which will be added to your daily work category by doing the "Problems of the Week" found on saasmath.com. Occasionally, an optional and more challenging extra-credit problem will also be added to a quiz or test.
