While it is true that VSCode is published under a free licence, the ready-to-install version you get to download is not.
There's an entirely free/libre version under the name VSCodium. It's basically VSCode without the part that sends data to Microsoft. See this explanation. There are no differences in features, settings etc. other than that.
Maybe this is worth a mention?
