Recording submission

From MoodleDocs

Recording submission is a submission type for the assignment that lets students record audio or video in their web browser and hand it in. No other service or app is needed. It suits speaking practice, presentations, explanations and any task where students show rather than write.

Installation

Install the plugin from the Moodle plugins directory, or download the ZIP file and follow Installing plugins. The files go in the folder mod/assign/submission/recording. The plugin supports Moodle 5.0 to 5.3.

Recording needs a browser with the MediaRecorder API: current Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari (14.1 or later). Browsers allow the microphone and camera only on secure sites, so the site must use HTTPS.

Setting up an assignment

In the assignment's settings, under Submission types, tick Recording submission, then choose:

  • Allowed recording type: Audio or video (the default), Audio only or Video only.
  • Maximum recording length (default 2 minutes; 0 means no limit): recording stops automatically at this length, and the server refuses a recording file larger than this length allows.

Recording a submission

The recorder in the submission form.
  1. The student opens the assignment and clicks Add submission (or Edit submission).
  2. They click Record audio or Record video (only the allowed types are shown) and allow the browser to use the microphone or camera.
  3. For video, the camera preview appears first, so they can check how they look. Recording does not start until they click Start recording. Cancel closes the camera. If the site allows it, Switch camera changes to another camera.
  4. While recording, a countdown shows the Time remaining. They click Stop recording when they have finished; at the maximum length, recording stops by itself.
  5. The recording is uploaded at once and can be played back. Record again replaces it.
  6. They click Save changes to save the submission.

When a student edits a submission, their current recording is shown so that they can play it before recording again. Teachers play the recording in the grading screen in the browser's own player.

Recordings are saved as WebM files (Chrome, Edge, Firefox) or MP4 (Safari); both play in the browser.

Site settings

The site settings.

In Site administration > Plugins > Activity modules > Assignment > Submission plugins > Recording submission:

  • Enabled by default (off): whether new assignments start with this submission type ticked.
  • Audio bitrate (128 kb/s) and Video bitrate (2,500,000 bits per second, that is 2500 kb/s): the quality, and so the file size, of recordings.
  • Allow switching cameras (off): show a Switch camera button during the video preview.

Capabilities

The plugin adds no capabilities. Students need the usual permission to submit to the assignment.

Backup and privacy

Recordings are included in course backups and restored with them. The plugin implements the Privacy API: recordings are included in data exports and deleted with deletion requests. See Data privacy.
