New and updated activity indicator

From MoodleDocs

New and updated activity indicator is a local plugin that marks new and recently changed activities and resources on the course page, so that students can see at once what is new without looking through every section.

Installation

Install the plugin from the Moodle plugins directory, or download the ZIP file and follow Installing plugins. The files go in the folder local/newupdate_indicator. The plugin supports Moodle 5.0 to 5.3.

What students see

A course page with New and Updated badges, and the New and recently updated list at the top.
  • A New badge on each activity that was added to the course within the time-span (one week by default).
  • An Updated badge on each activity whose content was changed within the time-span, if it is not already marked as new.
  • Optionally, a New and recently updated list at the top of the course page, with links to the newest and most recently changed items.

Once both dates are older than the time-span, the badge disappears. Students see badges only on the activities they can see.

The plugin compares two dates for each activity: when it was added to the course, and when its content was last changed (for activity types that record this).

Course settings

A course's own settings, with the recent content list turned on.

Teachers can change the settings for their own course in More > New/updated indicator settings:

  1. Tick Override site default settings for this course.
  2. Change any of the settings: the time-span, each badge's display, text, icon and colour, the position, and the recent content list.
  3. Click Save changes.

For example, a course can show New badges but hide Updated badges. When the override box is not ticked, the course uses the site settings, and any values entered are ignored.

Capabilities

  • local/newupdate_indicator:manage (Manage new/updated indicator settings for a course): change the course settings. Editing teachers and managers have it by default.

Privacy

The plugin stores only course display settings (labels, icons, colours, positions and time-spans), not personal data.
