Course index
The course index is the collapsible drawer on the left of the screen in Boost and Boost-based themes. It displays course sections and elements. As you move up and down the central course area, your location is highlighted in the course index. Clicking on an item in the course index will open it up directly in the course central area.
What the course index shows
Indented activities and resources
Activities and resources which are indented in the course page are also indented in the course index.
Text and media areas
Text and media areas also display in the course index and take the name from the field in the Text and media area if added, or the first few words of the area.
Moving items in the course index
With edit mode on, teachers can drag and drop items up and down directly in the course index (or by drag and drop from the central area to the selected location in the course index)
Course index and block drawers
Moodle 5.3 introduces five improvements to the course index and block drawers.
Dynamic height
The course index (left) and block (right) drawers now size to fit their content. This applies to pages with a limited-width layout, such as the course page. Full-width pages, such as Participants or the forum view, keep full-height drawers.

On smaller screens, the course index and block drawers now open below the top navigation bar, which stays visible and usable while a drawer is open.

Drawer toggle icon direction
The toggle icon on the course index (left) and block (right) drawers now points in a different direction depending on whether the drawer is open or closed.

Expand and collapse all sections
The course index drawer now has a Collapse all button directly under the course title. It changes to Expand all when every section is collapsed.

Block drawer improvements
The course index and block drawer toggle buttons have new icons. Inside the block drawer, the close button now sits on the left, and blocks with a title show a line between the title and the content.
