Backpacks

From MoodleDocs

Enabling users to connect to an external backpack means they can add badges from their Moodle site to their backpack and also display badges from other sites in their Moodle profile.

Note: Badgr, later known as Canvas Credentials, was renamed Parchment Digital Badges on 31 October 2025. Moodle still uses the name Canvas Credentials on its screens, and many of the service's addresses still use the badgr.io domain.

Warning: The free issuer plan for Parchment Digital Badges ended on 31 December 2025. Free issuer accounts were turned into backpacks: their badges can still be viewed, but no new badges can be issued from them.
  • Learners can still use a free backpack to store and share the badges they earn in Moodle.
  • Connecting an issuer account to a Moodle backpack (so badges show your organisation as the issuer) now requires a paid Parchment Digital Badges plan.

Site administration settings

Backpacks are managed from Site administration > Badges > Manage backpacks. A Parchment Digital Badges backpack for the United States region is provided by default (https://badgr.io).

Adding a Parchment Digital Badges backpack

  1. Go to Site administration > Badges > Manage backpacks.
  2. Click the button 'Add a new backpack'.
  3. Set API version to Open Badges v2.0.
  4. Set Provider to Canvas Credentials.
  5. Choose the Region your users' accounts are in: Australia, Canada, Europe, Singapore or United States. The backpack URL and API URL for the region are filled in for you.
  6. Optionally, tick Connect to a Canvas Credentials issuer account and enter the issuer email and password. This requires a paid plan. When it is set, badges exported to the backpack show your organisation as the issuer and you can track who received them. Leave it unticked if you don't have a paid plan: users can still add their badges to their own backpacks.
  7. Save changes.

Add one backpack for each region your users need. You can set the order in which backpacks are listed for users.

Canvas Credentials regions

The list of regions offered in the Region menu is set in Site administration > Badges > Badges settings > Canvas Credentials regions. Each line holds the region name, the backpack URL and the backpack API URL, separated by pipe characters. The defaults are:

Australia|https://au.badgr.io|https://api.au.badgr.io/v2
Canada|https://ca.badgr.io|https://api.ca.badgr.io/v2
Europe|https://eu.badgr.io|https://api.eu.badgr.io/v2
Singapore|https://sg.badgr.io|https://api.sg.badgr.io/v2
United States|https://badgr.io|https://api.badgr.io/v2

You can remove regions you don't want to offer, or update the URLs if Parchment changes them.

Other backpack providers

To connect to another Open Badges v2.0 provider, set Provider to Other and enter its backpack URL and backpack API URL. You can also tick Connect to backpack provider account and enter your issuer credentials, if the provider supports it.

Individual user settings

You can connect to your backpack as follows:

  1. In the user menu (top right), select Preferences, then 'Backpack settings' under Badges.
  2. If necessary, select your backpack provider and region.
  3. Enter the email address and password of your Parchment Digital Badges account.
  4. Check your mailbox for the verification email and follow its instructions to confirm the connection.

After the backpack connection is successfully established, badges from your backpack can be displayed on your badges page and your profile page. Go to Manage badges (via Preferences / Badges) and click the icon to add your badge to your backpack.

You can also select collections of badges from your backpack that you would like to display in your profile.

If a badge can't be added, Moodle shows the message sent by the backpack provider. You can also download the badge and add it to your backpack manually.

Open Badges v 2.1

Moodle is Open Badges v 2.1 compliant and the OAuth 2 Open Badges service enables users to connect to their OB v 2.1 compliant backpack without having to enter their credentials into Moodle.

To connect to Parchment Digital Badges using Open Badges v 2.1:

  1. Go to Site administration > Badges > Manage backpacks.
  2. Click the button 'Add a new backpack'.
  3. Create this backpack with the following details:

When you connect to an OB v 2.1 compliant backpack, a Badges service in OAuth 2 services is created automatically.

Note:
  • Use https://badges.parchment.com rather than the old https://badgr.com address. Connections using badgr.com may fail to complete.
  • Since 30 September 2026, users may get the error "Could not refresh OAuth 2 token. HTTP status for remote endpoint: 401" when connecting to Parchment Digital Badges with Open Badges v2.1. This is caused by the provider and is being followed up. Until it is fixed, use an Open Badges v2.0 backpack.
