Web services authentication is needed if you create a dedicated account to represent the external system that integrates with your site via Web services. This (non-human) user will then need all required permissions to act on behalf of the external system.
Other forms of authentication such as manual or e-mail based self-registration cannot be used, as it should not be possible for a human to log in with this account.
When you have decided you need to enable Web services authentication, do the following:
- From Site administration > Plugins > Authentication > Manage authentication, enable Web services authentication.
- Go through the detailed process in Site administration > Server > Web services > Overview.
