BTEC marking

From MoodleDocs

BTEC marking is an advanced grading method where an assignment has an overall grade of Refer,Pass,Merit or Distinction. This system is widely used in the UK when grading vocational courses such as the BTEC nationals (hence the name).

Each assignment can have multiple criteria at each level, e.g. P1, P2, M1, M2 D1, D2 etc. The tutor can define each of these criteria and then grade submissions as either meeting or not meeting each criteria. The teacher can enters a comment when grading each criteria . There is no concept of percentages, numbers or letters. Criteria are either met or not met.

A student must meet all criteria at a level and all criteria at all lower levels to achieve a criteria. So for instance to get a Merit a student must get all Pass and all Merit criteria. To get a Distinction they must get all Pass, all Merit and all Distinction Criteria. If they miss a pass criteria they get a refer, no matter what they have gained at the higher criteria. If an assignment is missing one or more of the higher levels (e.g. has only Pass criteria) and a student achieves all of these then they will gain an overall distinction for this criteria. This helps avoid confusion when reading overall grades and makes it possible to calculate grades by selecting the lowest grade in a category grouping.
