Re: "...deleted automatically after a period of time..."

It would be great to know what that period of time is, what variable governs it and how it can be adjusted.

Doesn't seem to be triggered by cron and flushing caches does seem to affect it.

As an admin keeping an eye on moodledata folder size, transitioning from 1.9 etc, a better idea of how orphaned files are treated would be really helpful.

I'm not sure why the instructions say to duplicate the student role and then modify the duplicate role. Why not just modify the default student role directly? If you duplicated the student role every time you made a change to it's permissions you'd soon end up with chaos.

To track changes made to roles (or any moodle system wide setting) I use the very flexible open source tiddlywiki system.
