Thing

Note: This pages is not an official moodle document. It is just a discussion of possible ways to structure our metadata. This structure uses an Activity-Organization-Person structure that is common in many metadata registries.

Thing is the root data element of the Moodle Metadata hierarchy. Thing is the term used by the W3C OWL standard.

Some possible Subclasses of Thing (sorted alphabetically within a hierarchy:

  • Activity (things that happen at a specific moment in time or time-interval
    • Enrollment - A relationship between a Student and a Course for a duration of time
  • Choice - A single question asked by a Teacher to all Students enrolled in a Course
  • Course - A collection of learning materials
  • Forum - collection of Postings
  • Glossary - a list of unique Terms and their definitions in the context of a Course
  • Grade - An assessment of subject mastery made by a Teacher to a Student in a Course
  • Lesson - An component of learning content within a Course
  • Organization - a group of people that work together for a purpose
  • Person - an instance of a human being
    • Student - a Person involved in a learning Activity
    • Teacher - a Person that assists in a learning activity
    • User - a Person that has been authenticated to use the Moodle system
  • Posting - a comment made by a Student in a Forum
  • Quiz - a collection of assessment elements with objective outcome scores
  • Wiki - an easy-to-edit database of linked documents
