June 2009 changes
First, I would like to thank previous editors and creators of this page, it has been a big help to me over the last 3 years!
Just used XAMPP to install 5 servers on 2 desktop computers in the last 2 weeks. Had to use it to create something that would run current Moodle 2.0. Noticed that these instructions are old (cira Moodle 1.5) and some of the XAMPP screens are different. None critically wrong. I also thought some of the screenshots were overpowering the presentation, so I deleted some and placed most of them in a thumb or frame format and added titles to many of them. I have taken a series of screenshots for 1.7.1 and it's phpMyAdmin as I double checked these instructions. I have not uploaded them but hope to.
I thought the instructions to use Explore in XAMPP Control panel was useful, but the straight forward way to me is to use Windows explorer, click on the moodle zip file and let the default program extract them to htdocs. So I deleted the old and put in the new to shorten things up.
I also have gotten into the habit of using the XAMPP restart icon, to start my webserver. It does not have any open windows. I then try to remember to click on the XAMPP stop icon :) The restart habit I picked up with the complete install packages. This will close other running apache and mysql processes which sometimes I forget are running. Some of us have more than a couple of webserver installs and using those desktop icons need to be renamed to tell them apart. In my case, I use explorer to start things.
Finally, I am still debating about all the moodle creation descriptions. I like them (even the screenshots) because they are uncluttered with exceptions, but wonder these instructions are repeated in another area of MoodleDocs.

Recent standard install packages simply have a moodle folder inside. I think the complete install packages used to have the server folder called moodle, then the equal to the htdocs folder was called moodle. --chris collman 20:23, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
Extaction of moodle files
When you extract the moodle files into the htdocs folder it does indeed create a moodle folder. However you seem to have to go to
to get the install.php to work (it says http:\\localhost\moodle in the guide)
I downloaded and installed the XAMPP package to my computer and actually got it working without any instructions. Problem is, now that I read the instructions, I wonder what on earth these instructions are for because the installation process looked virtually nothing like these instructions describe it. I mean what is the point of downloading this separate XAMPP stuff? I never knew I needed to download it and everything worked fine without this XAMPP thing. --N Hansen 10:45, 4 May 2006 (WST)

Yes this is the one. Sorry, I thought I'd done that successfully yesterday.
I used this to walk me through the installation and it worked with no problems. The glitch I had was figuring out how to make Moodle see the database I created...but I did. You might address how to note the path when creating the database. This is an excellent guide for a someone with no server experience. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. Tom
