Talk:Moodle version

From MoodleDocs

"In earlier versions of Moodle, the version number was sometimes available (depending upon the theme used) by hovering over the Moodle logo on the front page. This functionality was removed in Moodle 1.9.7 onwards for security reasons."

This is a pity, that info was really useful and the question "how can I know which moodle version is used on my moodle site" is regularly being asked on the Moodle forums.

Please keep in mind that not all Moodle users are admins on their site so these users have neither access to the notifications page nor, of course to the Version.php file.

I am really surprised that the mere display of the moodle version on a moodle site's home page should be a security issue.

Yeah, I think there should be a guide for determining it manually. No security through obscurity, please! --Bob Malcolm 06:39, 12 May 2011 (WST)
It is not a security issue for people who keep their Moodle install up-to-date. For people running an old version of Moodle, it is a big deal. If that icon is there on the front page, it makes it easy for malicious people to Google to find people running old versions of Moodle with a known security hole.--Tim Hunt 07:35, 12 May 2011 (WST)
