Laura, thanks for explaining the difference between groups and groupings. I've added a link to this page from Groups FAQ, rather than including the full explanation in the FAQ page, to avoid the FAQ page becoming too long. Documentation and functionality don't match
This article explains "This first level [groups] allows them to have workgroups, with either visible work or completely separate work in the same activity." Alas, separate groups seem to work no more since the introduction of groupings. See the discussion "separate groups not working with forum...". So either the documentation is wrong or the functionality is out of work.
