Talk:Create your own course

There has been a lot of great work and links on this page which should not be lost. I am thinking of a new user and duplicate information (which is OK to me) and the general need for more how to examples in MoodleDocs. Just want to think about this for a while and invite others to comment here --Chris collman 07:09, 31 August 2006 (CDT)

Here we have a page called 'Create your own course'. It seems have alot about settings, which certainly is part of creating a course. There is also a MoodleDoc page called 'course settings' (formerly called 'settings'). Humm, I am wondering if we want to push the slant of this page to even more towards the hands on by using more links and less words. For example, I like the screen shot size,shape and how the text below describes what the reader is seeing and where to go. I would tend to edit down the headings before this with the use of links and also rework the concepts(which I like) that follow the screenshot. ( --Chris collman 07:09, 31 August 2006 (CDT)

Now I am not sure. My goal was is to give the new user a different way to see (with more pictures) the Course settings page. I spent some time on that page creating more links to existing things. Add/edit a course (course settings)

General

Category

Use the pulldown menu to change or select a category for your course.

Full name

The full name usually appears at the top of every page in the course.

Short name

The short course name appears in the navigation bar. Clicking on it brings the user to the course's home page. "Features" is the course short name in the example.

Course ID

This is used with enrolment plugins.

Summary

The summary appears on a list of courses. Here is demo.moodle.org Features description.

Format

There are several formats for a course. Topic, Weekly, Social, LAMS, SCORM and Weekly CSS/no tables

Number of weeks/topics

How many weeks or topics should show in the course?

Course start date

When do you want your course to start? This overrides the 'Availability" setting below. Your course will automatically appear on this date when the course is "available to students".

Hidden sections

Do you want your student to see that parts of the course are not open to them? Or do you want to completely hide these things. For example, you may have quizes that you have built in your course and manually "unhide" them at a time of you choose. In this case you might use hidden sections are completely invisible, instead of "hidden sections are shown in collapsed form" from the pull down menu.

News items to show

In the Latest News block, how many of the newest entries do you want to show? For example, you might have posted 8 items. Setting this to 3, would show the last 3 posts subject headings.

Show grades

Some teachers do no want to show grades to students. This hides the File:grades icon.jpg grade's icon in the student view.

Show activity reports

Do you want your students to be able to see their activity in the course along with their blogs and profile information?

Maximum upload size

What is the maximum file a student can upload.

Is this a meta course?

A meta course automatically enrolls students in other courses that is attached to it.
