Talk:Outcomes Student Specification

From MoodleDocs

Comment on the description objectives for Student Specs:

"The last principal user in the Outcomes process is the student. There are really two key elements that are important for the students to be able to interact with outcomes: Visibility – Students should be able to see the outcomes that they are supposed to be achieving, and they should be able to see their performance towards those outcomes. Profile / Portfolio – Students should be able to have their outcomes and competencies tied to their profile, in a way that is sticky and can be part of a portfolio or resume."

While I agree that these two elements are key, I worry that the current use-case specs are being drawn to cater to a pretty specific credit-recovery use case and/or higher ed professional reqs satisfied use case that calls for a high transparency level in outcomes. Everything in this doc is pretty true for that type of use case, but if this credit-recovery use-case is applied to, say, a kindergarten teacher's use-case, then you need at least one more key element that overlaps both the teacher specs and the student specs: the teacher's ability to hide or show outcomes to students based on her own judgment as to whether that outcome information would be helpful to the student or would simply overwhelm the student. There should be a way for teachers to turn on or turn off whether students can see outcomes in their courses. I understand this is no easy task as it then becomes a question of whether to do that on a global course level or on an individual outcome level the way it kind of is now in that the teacher can choose to "hide" outcome information in the grader report from students, which is an onerous, time-consuming process to do on an individual outcome basis.

Just my two cents. I'm pretty excited to see so much work come to fruition, here. It is difficult to draw up student specs without input from those who actually have students to work with and test these theories in practice, so let the community know if you would like more input there and how you would like to go about getting it. 23/Jan/2013 As a student progresses through school, he/she will tally up HUNDREDS of satisfied standards. This will be a little overwhelming to view if they drill down to a granular level standard by standard. How will they report out as students acrrue more data? Will it be in perhaps a way that is similar to the hierarchy and grade just showing "complete" when grade 5 ela standards for Reading Foundations are satisfied? Is that what would be in the "My Outcomes" part for the elementary student where it says Ball State U Requirements for Graduation--this would actually just be the particular title of the standard/outcome hierarchy strand?

Date: 23/Jan/2013 Can you please provide the Navigation path for student, to view the performance report.

As per our understanding Navigation path is: Student login> My profile > My outcomes> View performance link > Course outcomes. Please confirm?
