To add a student to a group, the teacher must first create a grouping, then create a group in the grouping and then assign users to the group. Start with the group icon in the course administration block.  


Here is the overview of an existing course that has groupings, groups and shows students in one of the groups.
To create a grouping:
#Follow the groups link in the course administration block.
#Click the groupings tab on the groups page.
#Click the "Create grouping" button.
#Give the grouping a name and description (optional).
#Click the "Save changes" button.

Creating a group is very simple.  Press the create grouping button.

Moodle1.9

To use groupings in Moodle 1.9 onwards, the feature must be enabled by checking the enablegroupings box in Administration > Miscellaneous > Experimental. This will result in a groupings tab appearing on the Groups page.

To create a grouping:

  2. Click the groupings tab on the groups page.
  3. Click the "Create grouping" button.
  4. Give the grouping a name and description (optional).
  5. Click the "Save changes" button.
