To enable iconv in Windows package installations of Moodle:

Note: The iconv module is now part of PHP as of PHP version 5 so
the php_iconv.dll file is not needed anymore. It is no longer

Beginning with PHP 4.3.0 these functions are enabled by default. For older versions you have to configure and compile PHP with --enable-tokenizer. You can disable tokenizer support with --disable-tokenizer.

The windows version of PHP has built in support for this extension. You do not need to load any additional extension in order to use these functions.

Note: Builtin support for tokenizer is available with PHP 4.3.0.

Due to a bug fix, the behaviour of database activities using the 'Required entries' and 'Required entries before viewing' settings has changed. The tracker isssue number is MDL-16999.

Both of the functionalities ('Required entries' and 'Required entries before viewing') have been created at the same time and have been available in the user interface. However their implementation have changed time to time. 
 
Before the 13/02/08: the 'Required entries before viewing' was working as expected, but 'Required entries' settings didn't do anything. 
 
Between the 13/02/08 and the 14/03/08: both of them did the same actions ('Required entries before viewing') 
 
After the 14/03/08 to before the fix is applied: 'Required entries' did what 'Required entries before viewing' should do, and 'Required entries before viewing' did nothing. 
 
 
 
After the fix, you should expect your database settings to do: 
'''Required Entries:''' Users will see a reminder message displayed while viewing if they have not submitted the required number of entries.

As administrators upgrading your Moodle site, you will need to check that database activities using these two settings still work the way that the teacher intends. In the case your Moodle version is dated after the 13/02/08, it will be mandatory to change theses settings. If your Moodle version is dated after the 13/02/08, they would probably need to be changed. 

==What the worse that could happen if you don't check your database activities settings==
If your Moodle version has been released after the 13/02/08 and than you use the 'Required Entries' setting, you disallowed users to see other participant's entries before they submitted the required number of entries. It was a wrong behavior and has been fixed. So if you don't change your settings after upgrade (the fix will be applied during upgrade), the previously disallowed users will be allowed now. These users will still see a message saying they didn't submit the required number of entries but will be allowed to see other participant entries. In order to have the same behavior than before upgrade you need to use 'Required Entries before viewing' setting.

I think that it's very usefull to have a single page for (at least) all notes about one Moodle branch (for exemple : 1.9, 1.9.1, 1.9.2, 1.9.3...)

Reducing spam in Moodle

Here are some suggestions for reducing the risk of spam in Moodle:

* Keep "Force users to login for profiles" enabled in ''Administration > Security > [[Site policies]]'' to keep anonymous visitors and search engines away from user profiles.
* Keep "Profiles for enrolled users only" enabled in ''Administration > Security > [[Site policies]]'' (in Moodle 1.7.7, 1.8.8 and in 1.9.4 onwards).
* Keep self registration disabled in ''Administration > Users > Authentication > [[Manage authentication]]'' common settings.
* Consider the [[Risks|spam risks]] involved in allowing certain capabilities, such as [[Capabilities/mod/forum:replypost| replying to forum posts]], for visitor accounts.

If [[Email-based self-registration]] is used for self registration:
* Add spam protection to the new account form by enabling reCAPTCHA (in Moodle 1.9.1 onwards). This is quite effective against '''most''' automated spambots, but will not foil human spammers at all.
* Limit self registration to particular email domains with the allowed email domains setting or deny email addresses from particular domains, such as mailinator.com and temporaryinbox.com, with the denied email domains setting. Both settings are in ''Administration > Users > Authentication > [[Manage authentication]]'' common settings.
* Consider only enabling self registration for a short period of time to allow users to create accounts, and then later disable it.
* Keep "Email change confirmation" enabled in ''Administration > Security > [[Site policies]]'' (in Moodle 1.8.6 and in 1.9.2 onwards).

==Cleaning up profiles==
If your site was open and you have a spam problem then here are some things you can do to clean up the profiles:

* Browse your user list looking for patterns to detect users who need to be deleted. For example, spammers might have chosen a country that none of your real users has.
* Use the "Bulk user actions" tool under Admin > Users > Accounts to find all these users and delete them. Note that versions prior to 1.6.7, 1.7.5, 1.8.6, 1.9.2 had a [http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=101407 bug] that did not properly hide deleted user profiles, so make sure you have upgraded to a later version if you want to keep user profiles visible to the world.

Also on a related point the student API which is down for version 2.0. Is there any more detail to here on this yet? Will this be part of the IMS Enterprise data model and therefore enrolments plug in or will someone be working on a Moodle SIF agent? In the UK SIF is likely to take off as the DfES via Becta are currently consulting on a UK SIF model and piloting SIF in Birmingham and Northern Ireland. I believe that SIF is used quite widely in the US?

== Wiki engine ==

I noticed there was some talk about making new wiki module for 1.9... what do "nWiki" and "DF wiki" refer to? I've searched online and haven't found a clear description of what these mean. I am curious if they are still based on MediaWiki. I would hate to see some of the great features of MediaWiki (mainly the scalability) be lost. When MediaWiki is configured with Memcached and Squid caching servers, they can serve thousands of requests per second: hard to beat!

== Instructor-led Training Session Management ==

In several of the projects we work on there is a very real need to manage instructor-led sessions by booking training rooms and assigning trainers. I've always felt that Moodle is so advanced in many areas but this is something that is not really catered for. Developing this will mean that Moodle can comfortably handle blended-learning.

There has been some fantastic work done on the Face-to-Face contrib module and the integration of the MRBS module. But in my experience, what's needed is actually a combination of the two systems that integrates to the Moodle calandar and other standard components.

I'd be happy to spec out the requirements and test in real environments.

I notice in the tracker http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-1626 there is a request for the ability for notification (subscription) at the thread level, not just the forum level.
It says it is in 2.0 in the tracker.
What does this mean? Is this definite, since it is not mentioned in the roadmap? Is it too ''small'' an enhancement to justify comment in the roadmap? To what level of detail does the roadmap get maintained?

I note there is a request for the book module to be in the core. http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/CONTRIB-283 But it does not have a fix version indicated. What about the other suggestions in the tracker? Where do we find out what is coming and what is planned? How are decisions arrived at?

Now called: Conditional activities. I like this terminology change. Activity locking is a little more draconican and control sounding. And there is good reason to avoid the term "Selective Release".

A flat file allows enrolment management (enrol or unenrol) of existing users in existing course. The file is read one time by Moodle then erased. The file is located in the moodle file structure as a text file and [[Cron]] provides the timing when it is read.

==Options==
The site administrator should edit the settings for a flat file if it is enabled.

The default name and location of the file is ''.../moodledata/1/enrolments.txt''. If you do specify a file path, it should be absolute (eg /var/moodledata/enrolments.txt) and can be read and modified by the webserver process.

You can choose to have a log file send to the administrator and to send a notification to teachers and students.

==Flat file structure==
The file should be structured with the action, role, user id, and course ID number. Optionally a start time and end time can be added as additional fields.

The edit field link will give details on how to format the flat file on the Administration > Courses > Enrolments'' page.

To avoid the necessity of always having to create a new database from scratch, the database module has a presets feature (in Moodle 1.7 onwards). An image gallery preset is currently included in the database module to help get you started. You can create your own presets as well and share them with others.

==Importing a preset==

To use a preset:

# On the database page, click the Presets tab.
# The usual way to import a preset is clicking the "Choose file" button and browsing to the ZIP file containing the preset (eg. "preset.zip") stored on the server. If there does not yet exist a preset ZIP file on the server, upload it from your local machine. Choose the desired preset file by clicking on its action "Choose". Finally, press the "Import" button.
# Alternatively, you can choose a previously loaded preset.
# After the import, you can start to add or import entries. All the hard work of setting up the fields and templates has been done for you. If you desire, you can still customize the fields and templates.

{{Moodle 1.9}}In Moodle 1.9.1 onwards, you will see a "Overwrite current settings" checkbox after the "Import" button has been pressed. If checked, the database activity overwrites some of its current general settings by those stored in the preset:
* the "Introduction" HTML text
* "Required entries"

* "Maximum entries"
* "Comments"
* "Require approval?"

==Exporting a preset==

If you wish to share your database presets with others, you have two options:

#Export as a ZIP file, which can then be imported to another course or Moodle site.
#Save as a preset, which publishes the database for other teachers on your site to use. It will then appear in the preset list. (You can delete it from the list at any time.)

Note: Only the fields and templates of the database are copied when exporting or saving it as a preset, not the entries.

The user profile page gathers together all the known information about a particular user.

If you are a teacher, or looking at your own profile, then you will see some extra tabs allowing you to edit the profile settings, or providing detailed report and logs about the activity of that user.

You may also see a link for each course you or the user belongs to. This depends on your privileges. If you are viewing your profile or are an administrator clicking on these links keeps you on the user's profile but alters the breadcrumb menu so you can quickly jump to that course.

There may be buttons at the bottom of the view profile page depending on whose profile you are viewing and what permissions have been set.

:This takes you to a form for changing your password.

;Messages
:This opens the Messaging pop-up. It only shows when viewing your profile.

;Send message
:This takes you to the Messaging pop-up and opens a messaging session with the user whose profile you were using. It only shows when viewing someone else's profile and if messaging is switched on by the administrator.

User pictures

Users can update their picture by editing their user profile.

* The user is a remote user who has already roamed to your Moodle
* The user's username is the literal string 'guest'
* The user's ID is not set (which can't be the case here)

The [[Capabilities/moodle/site:mnetlogintoremote|moodle/site:mnetlogintoremote]] is not enabled for the [[Authenticated user role|Authenticated Users]] role by default and this, therefore, is the most likely reason.

1) Hangman: This game takes words from either a Glossary or quiz short answer questions and generates a hangman puzzle. Teacher can set the number of words that each game contains, if shows the first or last letter, or if show the question or the answer at the end.

2) Crossword: This game takes words from either a Glossary or quiz short answer questions and generates a random crossword puzzle. Teacher can set the maximum number of columns/rows or words that contains. Student can press the button “Check crossword” to check if the answers are correct. Every crossword is dynamic so it is different to every student.

3) Cryptex: This game is like a crossword but the answers are hidden inside a random cryptex.

4) Millionaire: This game takes words from multiple choice quiz questions and creates a “Who wants to be a Millionaire” style game complete with the three lifelines.

5) Sudoku: This game shows a sudoku puzzle to the students with not enough numbers to allow it to be solved. For each question the student correctly answers an additional number is slotted into the puzzle to make it easier to solve.

6) The hidden picture: This game randomly grabs an image from a glossary and hides it behind panels. As each question is answered correctly a portion of the image is revealed. How fast can they guess the image?

7) Snakes and Ladders: The students have to traverse a traditional “Snakes and Ladders” board by answering questions taken from either a Glossary or quiz short answer questions. As they get n answer right the dice is rolled and a random number displayed. If the student is in the bottom of the ladders and answers correct goes to the top. If he is in head of snake and answers wrong goes to tail.

8) Book with questions: When the student answers correct can go to the next chapter.
