==Locations for assigning roles==

Assigning roles is done for/in a particular context. A site and course are examples of two different contexts. While the process is similar for each context, the approach to role assignment page may be different. Here are several contexts and ways to find the assign roles.

*System context: ''Site Administration > Users > Permissions > Assign system roles'' (this context is named "site" in Moodle 1.7)
*Front page context: ''Site Administration > Front Page > Front Page roles'' (in Moodle 1.8 onwards)
*Course category context: Assign roles link in course categories page
*Course context: Assign roles link in course administration block
*Module context: "Locally assigned roles" tab in editing activity page
*Block context: Assign roles link in course block (with editing turned on)
*User context: Roles tab in user profile page

{{Moodle 1.9}}In Moodle 1.9 onwards, the assign roles page lists the names of users assigned to each role (unless there are more than 10 users, in which case this is stated).

==Contexts==

By assigning a role to a user in a certain context, you grant them the permissions contained in that role for the current context and all lower contexts.

The list of contexts in hierarchical order is as follows:

*System (no parent)
*Front page (parent = system) - Moodle 1.8 onwards
*Course category (parent = system)
*Course (parent = category or system)
*Module (parent = course or system - Moodle 1.8 onwards
*Block (parent = course or system - Moodle 1.8 onwards
*User (parent = system)

Inheritance will kick in if a role is assigned at a higher level. For example if a user is assigned a Teacher role in a particular course category then the user will have this role in ALL courses within the category.

Roles will only work if the role assignment is made in the correct context. For example, a Teacher role should be assigned in the course or course category context, a Forum moderator for a particular forum should be assigned in the module context.

The [[Inspector role]] is an example of a role assigned in the system context. The [[Forum moderator role]] is an example of a role assigned in the module context. The [[Parent role]] is an example of a role assigned in the user context.

==Assigning a role==

[[Image:Roles Assign Student.JPG|thumb|Assigning users the role of student i.e. enrolling them on the course]]"Student", "Teacher", "Course Creator" are some of the predefined roles that come with Moodle. The site administrator may have created additional roles.
To assign a role:
#Choose the type of role you wish to assign. For example, if we wanted to assign a Student role to Martin, we'd choose "Student" from the list of roles.
#Once you have chosen a role, two lists appear: a list of users who currently have that role (Student Demo in the example), and a list of users who don't. We can select Martin in the second list, and use the left-facing arrow button to add Martin to the list of Students. Multiple users may be selected by holding down the Apple or Ctrl key whilst clicking on the users' names.

Removing someone from a role is done by moving the user from the left column to the right.

==Hidden assignments==

To hide which role a user is assigned to, click the Hidden assignments check box before assigning the role to the user. This feature is useful for example if you don't want everyone with teacher rights listed in the course description. This feature is also very useful for hiding system wide roles from everyone else on the site.

Note: The role assignment is not hidden from admins or teachers i.e. users with the [[Capabilities/moodle/role:viewhiddenassigns|viewhiddenassigns capability]].

==Enabling teachers to assign the role of teacher==

By default, teachers are only allowed to assign the roles of non-editing teacher, student and guest. To enable teachers to assign the role of teacher:

#Access ''Administration > Users > Permissions > Define roles''.
#Click the tab "Allow role assignments".
#Click the checkbox where the teacher row and column intersect.
#Click the "Save changes" button.

==Beware of assignments that don't make sense==

There are many role assignments that do not make sense as the underlying functionality does not exist. Just because you give someone the "right" to do something does not guarantee that the interface or facility actually exists within the context that you have assigned that right. For example, you can assign a user the right to create new categories in the category context, however there is no interface within Moodle to do that (category creation is only available at the system level).

Note: Users should only be assigned the role of [[Administrator role|administrator]] (i.e. a role with the capability [[Capabilities/moodle/site:doanything|moodle/site:doanything]] set to allow) in the system context. Users should only be assigned the role of [[Course creator role|course creator]] in the system or a course category context.

==Multiple assignments==

A significant part of the roles infrastructure is the ability to assign a user into multiple roles (at the same time). The capabilities of each role are merged to produce the effective set of capabilities. In particular it is perfectly possible for a user to be both a Teacher and Student in the same course. This differs from the behavior of Moodle prior to the introduction of roles. You should be careful to ensure that if you change a user's role that you remove them from any other roles as required as this will no longer be done automatically.

==System roles==

Roles assigned in the site (1.7) or system context (1.8 onwards) are called system roles and apply across the entire site, including the front page. For example, a user assigned the system role of teacher will have this role in every course on the site.

In many sites only admins and course creators will be assigned system roles.

The [[Blogger role]] is an example of a system role.

==Front page roles==

You can assign roles and set up role overrides for your front page in exactly the same way as for a course.

There are various ways of enabling logged-in users to participate in front page activities, depending on your Moodle version. See the [[Roles FAQ]] for details.

==Assigning a role for a front page activity==

In versions of Moodle prior to 1.9.4, only users who are assigned front page roles appear in the list of potential users when assigning a role for a front page activity.

To assign a user a role for a front page activity:
# Assign the user a front page role, such as student, in ''Administration > Front Page > Front Page roles''.
# Click the "Locally assigned roles" tab in editing activity page for the front page activity.
# Choose the type of role you wish to assign.
# Use the left-facing arrow button to add a particular user to the list of users with the role.

If a user is unassigned from a front page role AFTER being assigned a role for a front page activity, they remain assigned the role for the front page activity.

Reducing spam in Moodle

Here are some suggestions for reducing the risk of spam in Moodle:

* Leave "Force users to login for profiles" enabled in ''Administration > Security > [[Site policies]]'' to keep anonymous visitors and search engines away from user profiles.
* Leave self registration disabled in ''Administration > Users > Authentication > [[Manage authentication]]'' common settings, or limit self registration to particular email domains with the allowed email domains setting, or only enable self registration for a short period of time to allow users to create accounts, and then later disable it.
* If [[Email-based self-registration]] is used for self registration, add spam protection to the new account form by enabling reCAPTCHA (in Moodle 1.9.1 onwards).
* If Email-based self-registration is used for self registration, leave "Email change confirmation" enabled in ''Administration > Security > [[Site policies]]'' (in Moodle 1.8.6 or 1.9.2 onwards).
* Consider the [[Risks|spam risks]] involved in allowing certain capabilities, such as [[Capabilities/mod/forum:replypost| replying to forum posts]], for visitor accounts.

==Open to Google==

Enabling this setting allows Google's search spiders guest access to your site. Any part of the site that allows guest access will then be searchable on Google. In addition, people coming in to your site via a Google search will automatically be logged in as a guest.

==Maximum uploaded file size==

Probably the most frequently asked question in the Moodle.org Using Moodle forums is "How do I increase the upload file size limit?"

Upload file sizes are restricted in a number of ways - each one in this list restricts the following ones:

1. The Apache server setting LimitRequestBody ... default in Apache 2.x or greater is set to 0 or an unlimited upload size

2. The PHP site settings post_max_size and upload_max_filesize in php.ini : '''modify php.ini in web server directories''' ( apache2.x.x/bin/php.ini ) not in php directories :

post_max_size = 128M; to increase limit to 128 Megabytes;
upload_max_filesize = 128M; to increase limit to 128 Megabytes;
max_execution_time = 600 ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds;

3. The Moodle site-wide maximum uploaded file size setting: ''Administration > Security > Site policies > Maximum uploaded file size [128M]''.

4. The Moodle course maximum uploaded file size setting in the course settings: ''Administration > Courses > Add/Edit courses > select Course category & edit each course > Maximum upload size [128M]''.

5. Certain course activity module settings (for example, Assignment)

==Enable messaging system==

Click the checkbox to enable site-wide [[Messaging]].

:''Note'': If you enable the messaging system, all users will be able to send and receive messages at any time. Teachers can't choose whether or not messaging is allowed between students in their particular course.

==Force users to login==

If you turn this setting on all users must login before they even see the front page of the site.

==Force users to login for profiles==

==Maximum time to edit posts==

This sets the editing time for forum postings. The editing time is the amount of time users have to change forum postings before they are mailed to subscribers.

If you have a site policy that all users must see and agree to before using this site, then specify the URL to it here, otherwise leave this field blank. The URL can point to anywhere, for example a file in the site files.

:''Tip'': It is recommended that the site policy is on the same domain as Moodle to avoid the problem of Internet Explorer users seeing a blank screen when the site policy is on a different domain.

==Blog visibility==

To enable [[Blogs]], select the level to which user blogs can be viewed.

By default, all site users can see all blogs. Blog visibility may be restricted so that users can only see blogs for people whom they share a course with or whom they share a group with.

:''Note'': This setting is for specifying the maximum context of the VIEWER not the poster. To limit blogging to specific users only, a [[Blogger role]] should be created and users assigned to it in the system context.

==Enable tags functionality==

:* For languages where this kind of capitalization changes the meaning, it is best to keep this option on.

==Password policy==

{{Moodle 1.9}}From Moodle 1.9 onwards, a password policy may be set up, ensuring users choose passwords of a certain length etc.

There is a check box to determine if password complexity should be enforced or not, the option to set the minimum length of the password, the minimum number of digits, the minimum number of lowercase characters, the minimum number of uppercase characters and the minimum number of non alphanumeric characters.

If a user enters a password that does not meet those requirements, they are given an error message indicating the nature of the problem with the entered password.

Enforcing password complexity along with requiring users to change their initial password go a long way in helping ensure that users choose and are in fact using "good passwords".

==Disable user profile images==

From Moodle 1.9 onwards, the ability for users to change their profile images may be disabled by checking the ''disableuserimages'' box.

==Email change confirmation==

{{Moodle 1.8}}In Moodle 1.8.6 and from 1.9.2 onwards, a confirmation step is required for users to change their email address unless the ''emailchangeconfirmation'' box is unchecked.

Over 70 language packs are available for you to install on your Moodle site. Simply select the languages you require from the list of available language packs and click on the "Install selected language pack" button.

{{Moodle 1.9}}In Moodle 1.9.1 onwards, multiple language packs may be selected for install by holding down the Apple or Ctrl key whilst clicking on the language packs.

All language packs, apart from English, are stored in ''moodledata/lang'' folder.

==Parent language packs==

Certain language packs contain only the modified language strings from their parent language, rather than a complete set. Thus, it is necessary to install the parent language pack too. These language packs are:
* de_du (which requires de)
* es_mx and es_ar (which require es)
* fr_ca (which requires fr)

==Manual language pack installation==

Language packs may also be installed manually by downloading the zip file from [http://download.moodle.org/lang16/ Moodle Downloads - Language Packs] to a directory called ''lang'' in your ''moodledata'' directory and then unzipping.

The user profile page gathers together all the known information about a particular user.

If you are a teacher, or looking at your own profile, then you will see some extra tabs allowing you to edit the profile settings, or providing detailed report and logs about the activity of that user.

You may also see a link for each course you or the user belongs to. This depends on your privileges. If you are viewing your profile or are an administrator clicking on these links keeps you on the user's profile but alters the breadcrumb menu so you can quickly jump to that course.

There may be buttons at the bottom of the view profile page depending on whose profile you are viewing and what permissions have been set.

:This opens the Messaging pop-up. It only shows when viewing your profile.

==How can I force automatic course enrollment?==

You can link to a course in an HTML block, using the resources drop down or indeed any other method and then use the following URL (where 999 is your course ID):

==How can I embed a webpage in my course?==

Using an iframe in a label allows external or internal web pages to be displayed in the middle of the moodle screen (instead of just putting a link to them)

==How can I copy my course or part of it?==
There are several ways. These methods can be used to store any activity as a template. For example, a teacher might want to duplicate an assignment for different groups that will appear under different weeks in the same course. Or take a Lesson in one course and use it in another course.

===Import course data===
*[[Import_course_data]] is probably the most straight forward. It brings in an other courses material by activity group. For example, you can import all of the lessons from one course you have rights to into another, but not just a single lesson.

===Use backup to duplicate or copy===
*Backing up a course. Each version of Moodle has different options for backing up. The basic process in copying a course, is to create a backup and then select "new course" when restoring that backup.
**Understand what options you DO AND DO NOT need to backup, so your copy has just what it needs. For example, you may not want to see any student information or files in your new course, so don't back that up.
**Version 1.6 backup process has lots of boxes to check or uncheck next to every activity and resource that is in the course. Version 1.5.3 has a list of activity types to select for inclusion in a backup.
**One of the old tricks in 1.5.3 and earlier version, is to restore the old course to a new course. Then edit down the new course to just the activities you want.
**Want the same activity in 5 courses you already created? Create a backup of a course that only contains the activity you want. Now restore that course by selecting the option "add to existing course, keep data", repeat it for every one of your 5 courses.

==Creating a course on our website takes too long==
Depending upon your connection speed, screen refresh rates can really slow the creation process. As a teacher, you might consider [[Complete_install_packages#Install_complete_package|adding a localhost version]] of Moodle on your desktop. Be sure that you have a method of restoring you localhost backup to your web based Moodle. And of course, your localhost version should be the same version as your web based Moodle.

==Before you start==
*We are assuming that your site administrator has set up Moodle, and assigned you to a new, blank course where you have teacher privileges.
*You must be [[Log in |logged in]] in order to edit a course and use most of the features described below. We have some tips if you are having [[Can not log in | trouble logging in]].
*You may also experiment for an hour at a time for free at [http://demo.moodle.org/ demo.moodle.org]. Your course may look a little different from the illustrations in this article.

==Basics==
Most [[Course homepage|course homepage formats]] are broken into [[Course sections|course sections]] (often by week or topic). [[Adding resources and activities|Resources and activities]] are added to each section. When writing text in Moodle you have a range of [[Formatting options]], including using [[HTML editor|HTML in Moodle]]. The [[Course settings]] are robust and offer different ways to enroll [[Students]] or format the course.

The illustration below shows a new course set up with topic sections in the middle column. In the right and left columns are a few of Moodle's many [[:Category:Block|blocks]] such as "Latest News" or "[[Administration block|Administration]]". [[#Editing course section|Editing has been turned on]]. The teacher is ready to add resources and activities.

To add or alter activities or resources a teacher must [[Turn editing on|turn editing on]] using the "Turn editing on" button on the course homepage. The same button will also turn editing off.

When editing has been turned on, a variety of editing icons appear next to all editable objects in the course. The table below illustrates some of the icons you are likely to see. Your icons may look different because of your [[Theme]]. For more details about each editing activity, visit [[Adding/editing_a_course#Editing_a_course|editing a course]].

Similarly, the "Turn student view on" button allows the teacher to see the course page as a student would see it.

==Activity modules==
[[Image:Activity dropdown 1 8.JPG|frame|right|Add an activity drop-down menu - Moodle 1.8.2 ]] There are a number of robust interactive learning [[:Category:Modules|activity modules]] that you may [[Adding_resources_and_activities | add to your course]] with the "Add an activity" drop down menu.

Communication and collaboration may take place using live [[Chats]] or asynchronous discussion [[Forums]] for conversational activities. You can also use [[Choices]] to gain group feedback. Adding [[Wikis]] to your courses is an excellent way to allow students to work together on a collaboratively-authored project.

Work can be uploaded and submitted by students and scored by teachers using [[Assignments]] or [[Workshops]]. Workshops such as these have several assessment options, including instructor-assessment, self-assessment, and even peer-assessment. Online [[Quizzes]] offer several options for automatic and manual scoring. You can even integrate your Hot Potato quizzes by adding a [[Hotpot]] activity.

[[Lesson module|Lessons]] and [[SCORM]] activities deliver content and offer ways of individualizing your presentation based upon a student's choices. [[Glossaries]] of keywords can be set up by the instructor, and can be configured to allow students to edit, add, or rate entries.

[[Surveys]] and [[Database module|Databases]] are also very powerful additions to any course.

If all of that isn't enough for you then you can also add contributed modules that are not part of the official Moodle release!

==Resources==

Moodle supports a range of different [[Resources|resource types]] that allow you to include almost any kind of digital content into your courses. These can be added by using the [[Adding_resources_and_activities | add a resource]] dropdown box when editing is turned on.

A [[Text page]] is a simple page written using plain text from a link in the course. Text pages aren't pretty, but they're a good place to put some information or instructions. If you are after more options for your new page then you should be thinking about adding a [[Web page]] and making use of Moodle's WYSIWYG editor.

Of course the resource may already exist in electronic form so you may want to [[File or website link|link to an uploaded file or external website]] or simply display the complete contents of a [[Directory|directory]] in your course [[Files|files]] and let your students pick the file themselves. If you have an [[IMS content package]] then this can be easily added to your course.

[[Label]]s allow you to add more information between activity or resource links in your course.

===Blocks seen by students===
Each course homepage generally contains [[Blocks_%28teacher%29|blocks]] on the left and right with the centre column containing the course content. Blocks may be added, hidden, deleted, and moved up, down and left/right when editing is turned on. Examples of blocks can be seen in the Getting Started image above. [[Latest News block|"Latest News"]], "[[Blogs]]", [[Upcoming Events block|"Upcoming Events"]], and [[Recent Activity block|"Recent Activity"]] are a few examples.

A wide range of [[Blocks_%28teacher%29#Block_types|over 16 different block types]] can provide additional information or functionality to the learner by the teacher. The standard blocks that come with Moodle are shown on the right. There are also many contributed developed by Moodlers that an administrator can add to this list.

===Course administration block===
A teacher with editing rights will also have a [[Administration_block|course administration block]]. This is an important tool for a teacher. It has sub menus for course: [[Course backup|backup]], [[Restore|restore]], [[Assign roles]], [[Grades|grades]], [[Reports|activity logs/reports]], [[Files]] and the useful [[Course settings]].

==General advice==

* Subscribe yourself to all of the [[forum]]s in your course so that you can keep in touch with your class activity.
* Encourage all of the students to fill out their [[Edit profile|user profile]] (including photos) and read them all - this will help provide some context to their later writings and help you to respond in ways that are tailored to their own needs.
* Keep notes to yourself in the private "Teacher's Forum" (under Administration). This is especially useful when team teaching.
* Use the [[Logs]] link (under Administration) to get access to complete, raw logs. In there you'll see a link to a popup window that updates every sixty seconds and shows the last hour of activity. This is useful to keep open on your desktop all day so you can feel in touch with what's going on in the course.
* Use many reports. [[Reports]] in the Administration block, [[Recent_activity|Activity Reports]] (next to each name in the list of all people, or from any user profile page). These provide a great way to see what any particular person has been up to in the course.
* Respond quickly to students. Don't leave it for later - do it right away. Not only is it easy to become overwhelmed with the volume that can be generated, but it's a crucial part of building and maintaining a community feel in your course.
*Don't be afraid to experiment: feel free to poke around and change things. It's hard to break anything in a Moodle course, and even if you do it's usually easy to fix it.
* Use the [[Navigation bar|navigation bar]] at the top of each page - this should help remind you where you are and prevent getting lost

Teachers, and other users with the capability to manage course activities, can change the arrangement of blocks on the course page (apart from [[Sticky blocks]]) when editing is turned on.

New blocks can be added using the Add blocks dropdown menu. Existing blocks (apart from [[Sticky blocks]]) can be hidden, deleted or moved using the icons in the block header.

==Adding blocks to activities==
Certain activity modules, such as the [[Lesson module]] and the [[Quiz module]], support blocks on their pages. The site administrator must turn this function on so that the teachers will be able to add side blocks on those pages, otherwise the interface does not show this feature to the teacher.

By default, this feature is disabled in the [[Site administration block]]. An administrator can enable it by checking the ''showblocksonmodpages'' box in ''Administration > Appearance > Themes > Theme settings''. When enabled, users who can manage course activities will be able to add blocks to pages.

The '''Book module''' makes it easy to create multi-page resources with a book-like format. It is contributed by [http://moodle.org/user/view.php?id=12863&course=5 Petr Škoda]. This module can be used to build complete book-like websites inside of your Moodle course.

Previously created websites can be imported directly into the Book module. Books can be printed entirely or by chapter.

The book module allows you to have main chapters and sub chapters, but it goes no deeper. In other words, sub chapters cannot have their own sub chapters. This was an intentional decision by the creator of the book module. He intended this to be a simple resource for teachers and students.

The book module is not interactive. You can, however, link to [[Choice module|choices]], [[Forum module|forums]] etc., from within a book. And you can include multimedia objects like [[Flash]] movies in your book.

This will enable the RSS option to appear in Forum properties of course. Creators of forums will still have to turn on RSS manually when creating a forum. Not all forums will automatically have RSS option displayed.

For 1.8+, the second step will be different. In Admin block, select Modules > Summaries > Settings (for forum) > Change forum_enablerssfeeds to Yes.

== Subscribing to RSS feeds==
To subscribe to an RSS feed from Moodle, click on the orange 'RSS' button and copy the address from your browser bar to your RSS reader software. Although most web browsers will automatically detect an RSS feed (IE7 and Firefox), Moodle does not seem to be sending them the correct information.
