An authenticated user is someone who has logged onto the Moodle site. Their user name and password are recognized by the Moodle server.

The default [[Role|role]] for all logged in users is Authenticated user. This default can be changed in ''Settings > Site administration > Users > Permissions > [[User policies]]''). In older Moodle versions the default role for all logged-in users was Guest.
