Earlier versions of Moodle had a “quirk” that allowed activities to be hidden inside “extra” weeks or topics, but still be accessible to students. These were known as “orphaned” activities and allowed Moodle users to achieve particular designs for their courses.
Stealth mode (formerly referred to as 'orphaned activities') is an [[Advanced features|advanced feature]] allowing activities or resources to be hidden on the course page but still accessible to students. The feature means, for example, that you can add a link to an activity within a Moodle Page or Book but not display it on the course page. It is available for [[Course formats|standard Moodle course formats]] but not necessarily for all [https://moodle.org/plugins/?q=category:19 contributed course formats].

Now in Moodle 3.3 you can put any activity into “stealth mode” to achieve this same effect in a more officially-supported way.

From 'Advanced features', administrators may 'Allow stealth activities' in courses. Teachers will then be able to make activities available to students but not shown on the course page. This feature is supported in "Weeks", "Topics", "Social" formats and on the front page. Other course formats may or may not implement it.

Stealth mode (formerly referred to as 'orphaned activities') is an advanced feature allowing activities or resources to be hidden on the course page but still accessible to students. The feature means, for example, that you can add a link to an activity within a Moodle Page or Book but not display it on the course page. It is available for standard Moodle course formats but not necessarily for all contributed course formats.

Enabling stealth activities

  1. The administrator should first 'Allow stealth activities' from Site administration > Advanced features.
  2. Teachers can then make items stealth from the three-dot menu to the right of an activity > Availability > Make available but don't show on course page:

What if the admin setting is disabled?

'Allow stealth activities' is an Advanced feature. If the administrator has not enabled the setting, then it is still possible to make activities available but not shown on the course page.

To make activities (or resources) available but not shown on the course page when 'Allow stealth activities' is disabled:

  1. Hide the whole section which contains (for example) the quizzes. (1 below).
  2. Make individual activities available from the three-dot icon > Availability (2 below).
  3. Ensure that the single page which will contain the quiz links is in a section where it will be visible to students (3 below).
