When grading an activity it is possible to use a grading scale, a grade point (numerical scale) or neither.
A teacher may select grade points by going to the Edit settings screen of an activity, for example an assignment, scrolling to 'Grade' and then selecting 'Point' from the Type dropdown:

(Note that if they choose a number higher than that set by the administrator in Site administration>Grades>General settings, they will see a warning message and not be allowed to save their choice.)
The default number of points a teacher sees when choosing points from the Type dropdown is set by the administrator (See section on Site administration settings)

An administrator can specify the maximum grade points value and the default grade points value from Site administration>Grades>General settings.
