Simply select the languages you require from the list of available language packs and click on the &amp;quot;Install selected language pack&amp;quot; button.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Multiple language packs may be selected for install by holding down the Apple or Ctrl key whilst clicking on the language packs.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
All language packs, apart from English, are stored in &#039;&#039;moodledata/lang&#039;&#039; folder.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Parent language packs==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Certain language packs contain only the modified language strings from their parent language, rather than a complete set. Thus, it is necessary to install the parent language pack too. These language packs are:&lt;br /&gt;
* de_du, de_kids and de_comm (which requires de)&lt;br /&gt;
* es_ar (which require es)&lt;br /&gt;
* fr_ca (which requires fr)&lt;br /&gt;
* en_us (which requires the default en)&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Manual language pack installation==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Language packs may also be installed manually by downloading the zip file from [http://download.moodle.org/langpack/2.0/ Moodle 2.0 language packs] to a directory called &#039;&#039;lang&#039;&#039; in your &#039;&#039;moodledata&#039;&#039; directory and then unzipping.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Language pack updates==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
To update installed language packs, except English and any local language packs, click the &#039;Update all installed language packs&#039; button in &#039;&#039;Settings &amp;gt; Site administration &amp;gt; Language &amp;gt; Language packs&#039;&#039;. The English language pack is updated automatically each time the site is upgraded.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;div&gt;Tags are useful for connecting different bits of information together.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Obviously it&#039;s important to use the same tags everywhere.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This page describes standard Moodle tags that you should use when describing Moodle events on the internet (Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, del.icio.us etc)&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==General Moodle stuff==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For general discussion of Moodle, use the tag &amp;quot;moodle&amp;quot;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Twitter example:&lt;br /&gt;
 I just installed #moodle on a computer I bought ten years ago!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Moodle Moots==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For Moodle conferences (Moots) use mootCCYY where:&lt;br /&gt;
* CC is a country ISO code or state abbreviation, and&lt;br /&gt;
* YY is a year.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
 mootAU09&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Capitalisation doesn&#039;t matter and just helps readability.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The two letter code would usually be a country, but for somewhere like the US where there are different moots they might choose to use &amp;quot;us&amp;quot; or a state like &amp;quot;sf&amp;quot; or &amp;quot;ok&amp;quot;. It really doesn&#039;t matter if two moots both used mootus09 for example, because they would be separated in time.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Tags in use==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* #mooteu09 MoodleMoot Euskadi&lt;br /&gt;

		<updated>2011-12-27T10:55:01Z</updated>

		<summary type="html">&lt;p&gt;Ralfh: /* Standard install package */&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;{{Installing Moodle}}	&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;Before you do anything else, read [[Upgrading to Moodle 2.2]]&#039;&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Moodle is designed to upgrade itself from one version to the next. The procedure is&lt;br /&gt;
# [[Site backup|Back up everything]].&lt;br /&gt;
# Replace the old version of the code with the new one.&lt;br /&gt;
# Visit the [[Site_administration_block#Notifications|administrator notifications]] link, which triggers Moodle to self-update.&lt;br /&gt;
These steps are explained in more detail below.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Sometimes there are specific considerations when upgrading to a particular version.  See the [[dev:Releases|Releases page]] for more information on this.  You also have to be more careful if you have installed additional plug-ins or customised the code.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
See this tutorial if you are [http://ic.eflclasses.org/tutorials/howtoupgrademoodlewithcpanel.swf upgrading Moodle on cpanel]. It is a bit rough around the edges and is a little dated, but you should get the idea.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There is also a separate page about [[Ubuntu_Debian_Upgrades|upgrading Moodle if you installed it using the Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Debian package manager]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
__TOC__&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When upgrading a Moodle installation you should follow these steps:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Before you upgrade your site for real==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You are strongly advised to make a copy of your entire Moodle site onto another computer (see [[Moodle migration]]) and run the upgrade there to verify it will work.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Check the requirements==&lt;br /&gt;
Spend some time re-reading the [[Installing Moodle | installation documentation]] and documentation for the new version. Check the system requirements for the target version you want to upgrade-to in &#039;&#039;Settings &amp;gt; Site administration &amp;gt; Server &amp;gt; [[Environment]]&#039;&#039;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Put your Site into Maintenance Mode==&lt;br /&gt;
Before you begin upgrading your site, you should put it into [[Maintenance_mode | Maintenance Mode]] to stop any non-admin users from logging in.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== Backup important data ==&lt;br /&gt;
See [[Site backup]] for more specific information.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There are three areas that should be backed up before any upgrade:&lt;br /&gt;
#Moodle software (For example, everything in server/htdocs/moodle)&lt;br /&gt;
#Moodle uploaded files (For example, server/moodledata)&lt;br /&gt;
#Moodle database (For example, the SQL or Postgres database)&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Experienced site administrators know that it is a best practice (a very good idea) to make a backup of any production system before a major upgrade. In fact, it is a good idea to automate your server to backup your Moodle installation daily.  Most upgrades on sites that have used the standard Moodle packages (no contributed code and no little tweaks to the php files), will not have any major issues with the upgrade process.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
:&#039;&#039;TIP:&#039;&#039; One more time, &amp;quot;do not risk what you can not afford to lose&amp;quot;: do regular backups, make sure it is really backed up and know how to restore a backup!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== Install the new Moodle software ==&lt;br /&gt;
Upgrading can be a simple process or a more complicated process.  Sites that have not used contributed code and are migrating from say Moodle 1.x.1 to 1.x.3 &#039;&#039;&#039;should&#039;&#039;&#039; not have a problem.  However, we still recommend that with any production server that you have made a successful backup of the MySQL database, the moodledata directory and the moodle program folders and files.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
*Do not overwrite an old installation unless you know what you are doing ... sometimes old files can cause problems in new installations. Review the backup section above.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
=== Standard install package ===&lt;br /&gt;
Having read the cautions about backups, download a copy of the standard install package. Here is a set of simple instructions for an average site.&lt;br /&gt;
*It is probably a good idea to use the [[Site administration block]]&amp;gt;Server&amp;gt;Maintenance mode to prevent user activity as the site upgrades. &lt;br /&gt;
*Having moved your old Moodle software program files to another location, unzip or unpack the upgrade file so that all new the Moodle software program files are in the location the old files used to be in on the server.  Moodle will adjust SQL and [[Moodledata directory|moodledata]] if it needs to in the upgrade.&lt;br /&gt;
*Copy your old [[Configuration file|config.php file]] back to the new Moodle directory. If you&#039;ve defined individual blocks for new courses you have to delete &#039;admin&#039; block definition and replace by &#039;settings&#039; for the new block.&lt;br /&gt;
*If you had added any custom plugins or themes into your Moodle you can add them to the new code. It is important to check that you get the correct version for your new version of Moodle. You should check in the optional plugins database. Be particularly careful that you do not overwrite any code in the new version of Moodle. If you are upgrading to Moodle 2.0 or newer, note that all optional plugins and themes required a significant rewrite and most do not have 2.0 versions (yet). &lt;br /&gt;
*Use the notification link in the site administration to start the upgrade process. You will see a series of lines or screens indicating progress.  &lt;br /&gt;
*After a successful upgrade, turn off the maintenance mode, so your users can get into the site.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
=== Using a downloaded archive ===&lt;br /&gt;
In some installs, the site administrator may overwrite the Moodle code with a backup copy.  Or create a new clean install copy of Moodle, then restore an archive (via a compressed file or parts of a saved set of Moodle code files and folders). &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
*Do not overwrite an old installation unless you know what you are doing ... sometimes old files can cause problems in new or &amp;quot;cleaned&amp;quot; installations. The best way is to rename the current Moodle code directory (for example rename &amp;quot;moodle&amp;quot; to &amp;quot;moodleold&amp;quot;), then unpack the new Moodle archive into the old location (for example, a new directory called &amp;quot;moodle&amp;quot;).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
====Linux====&lt;br /&gt;
 mv moodle moodle.backup&lt;br /&gt;
 tar xvzf moodle-1.1.tgz&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Next, copy across your config.php, any other plugins such as custom themes, and your .htaccess file if you created one (&#039;&#039;&#039;check that optional/custom plugins are the correct version for your new Moodle first&#039;&#039;&#039;):&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
 cp moodle.backup/config.php moodle&lt;br /&gt;
 cp -pr moodle.backup/theme/mytheme moodle/theme/mytheme&lt;br /&gt;
 cp -pr moodle.backup/mod/mymod moodle/mod/mymod&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Don&#039;t forget to &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
 sudo chown www-data moodle/config.php&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you use cron, take care that cron.php is executeable and uses the correct php command: &lt;br /&gt;
 chmod 740 admin/cli/cron.php (some configurations need chmod 750)&lt;br /&gt;
 copy the first line from cron.php (if it looks like &#039;#!/usr/local/bin/php&#039; or &#039;#!/usr/local/bin/php5.3&#039;, no need to copy &#039;&amp;lt;?php&#039;)&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
if necessary.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
where www-data is whatever user the Apache user is on your system. This is often &#039;apache&#039; or &#039;www&#039;.&lt;br /&gt;
You can find out by doing &#039;ls -l&#039; in your /var/www/moodle folder (or wherever your moodle site is)&lt;br /&gt;
and then looking at the owner and group.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
so you may see something like&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
 ls -l&lt;br /&gt;
 ...lots of lines...&lt;br /&gt;
 -rw-r--r--   1 apache system     784 Jun 28  2007 config.php &lt;br /&gt;
 ...lots more lines...&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
so the owner is apache and the group is system. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
To replicate this on your new system you can do  &#039;chown apache:system config.php&#039; &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
or to do a whole group do&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
 chown apache:system ./*&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
and recursively&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
 chown -R apache:system ./*&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
=== Using CVS ===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
New sites should now use Git rather than CVS (see next section). If your site already uses CVS, to update, just go into the Moodle root directory and update to the new files:&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;pre&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
$ cd /path/to/your/moodle/&lt;br /&gt;
$ cvs update -dP&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/pre&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
To update from an older version type in the following:&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;pre&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
$ cd /path/to/your/moodle/&lt;br /&gt;
$ cvs -Q update -dP -r MOODLE_18_STABLE&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/pre&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Make sure you use the &amp;quot;d&amp;quot; parameter to create new directories if necessary, and the &amp;quot;P&amp;quot; parameter to prune empty directories.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
=== Using Git ===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You can use [[Git]] for updating or upgrading your Moodle. New sites are recommended to use this rather than CVS since all Moodle development has moved to Git.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
See [[Git for Administrators]] for further details.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== Finishing the upgrade ==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The last step is to trigger the upgrade processes within Moodle. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
To do this just visit the [[Site administration block]] admin page (or &#039;&#039;&amp;lt;nowiki&amp;gt;http://example.com/moodle/admin&amp;lt;/nowiki&amp;gt;&#039;&#039;) and the &amp;quot;Notifications&amp;quot; link.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Moodle will automatically detect the new version and perform all the SQL database or file system upgrades that are necessary. If there is anything it can&#039;t do itself (very rare) then you will see messages telling you what you need to do.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Assuming all goes well (no error messages) then you can start using your new version of Moodle and enjoy the new features!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
:&#039;&#039;TIP:&#039;&#039; Use the site administration block&amp;gt;Server&amp;gt;Maintenance mode to prevent users from changing data during the upgrade.&lt;br /&gt;
:&#039;&#039;TIP:&#039;&#039; If you are running a large scale Moodle site (e.g. have more tha 10,000+ courses and 40,000+ users), make sure that you do your own performance profiling testing.  Post a thread or check the [http://moodle.org/mod/forum/view.php?id=28 Installation problems forum] and check [[Tracker]] for potential issues.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== Verify the upgrade (optional) ==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you wish to confirm that the database definitions in the upgraded database match the definitions of a new, clean install (which they should) you might like to look at [[Verify Database Schema]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Upgrading more than one version==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Normally you can upgrade directly form any Moodle version to any later version. So, for example you could upgrade from 2.0 to 2.1, or from 1.9 to 2.2.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
However, every so often, this general rule gets broken, because supporting really large jumps (for example Moodle 1.0 to 2.2 in one step) would be impossible. So far, the break points have been:&lt;br /&gt;
* You must have upgraded to version 1.9.x before you can upgrade to a later 2.x version.&lt;br /&gt;
* You must have upgraded to version 2.2.x before you can upgrade to 2.3 or later.&lt;br /&gt;

A Dropbox repository can be enabled by an administrator in &#039;&#039;Site administration &amp;gt; Modules &amp;gt; Repositories &amp;gt; Manage repositories&#039;&#039;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Sign up app keys at dropbox==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
# Go to https://www.dropbox.com/developers/apps&lt;br /&gt;
# Create an app, you must change app status to Production. This feature is only availble for new API developers, but not for Moodle repository users. See MDL-26949&lt;br /&gt;
# Copy the app keys&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Configuration==&lt;br /&gt;
Once enabled by the administrator a Dropbox API Key and Secret will need to be added to the Dropbox settings in order for it to work.  This will be &#039;&#039;the&#039;&#039; Dropbox available to all users throughout the site (and each will need the correct Dropbox login credentials to access it from their courses).  To gather the Dropbox API Key and Secret click the &amp;quot;Dropbox Developers&amp;quot; link on the Dropbox repository settings page.  On the next page you&#039;ll be prompted to login with your Dropbox username and password and to create a Dropbox app.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Once the App has been created at Dropbox.com you&#039;ll have the API Secret and Key available at the bottom of the App page.  Entering those on the Dropbox settings page (and clicking Save) back in Moodle will finish the configuration.  Dropbox is now available to the entire site.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
To access it editing teachers need only &amp;quot;Add...&amp;quot; a new file while editing or creating a resource to see Dropbox as a new option.&lt;br /&gt;

		<summary type="html">&lt;p&gt;Ralfh: /* Format */&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;{{Questions}}&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;Embedded answers (Cloze)&#039;&#039;&#039; questions consist of a passage of text (in Moodle format) that has various answers embedded within it, including multiple choice, short answers and numerical answers.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There is currently no graphical interface to create these questions - you need to specify the question format using the text box or by importing them from external files. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Lots of people suggest that [[Hot Potatoes]] software is the easiest way to create Embedded answer (Cloze) questions.  Once you have created your questions on your PC, you can then import them into Moodle&#039;s quiz module.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Question set-up==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
#Select the question category&lt;br /&gt;
#Give the question a descriptive name - this allows you to identify it in the question bank.&lt;br /&gt;
#Enter the passage of text (in Moodle format - see [[Embedded_Answers_%28Cloze%29_question_type#Format|Format]] below) into the &#039;question text&#039; field.&lt;br /&gt;
#Select an image to display if you want to add a picture to the question. For the student, it appears immediately above the question text.&lt;br /&gt;
#Set the &#039;default question grade&#039; (i.e. the maximum number of marks for this question).&lt;br /&gt;
#Set the &#039;Penalty factor&#039; (see [[Embedded_Answers_%28Cloze%29_question_type#Penalty_factor|Penalty factor]] below).&lt;br /&gt;
#If you wish, add general feedback. This is text that appears to the student after he/she has answered the question.&lt;br /&gt;
#The editor has been modified and allows you to test if your syntax is good. The different questions elements decoded will be displayed and syntax errors pinpoint. However, it cannot check if the question decoded is two questions in one because of an error syntax.&lt;br /&gt;
#Click Save changes to add the question to the category.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
=== Penalty factor ===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The &#039;penalty factor&#039; only applies when the question is used in a quiz using adaptive mode - i.e. where the student is allowed multiple attempts at a question even within the same attempt at the quiz. If the penalty factor is more than 0, then the student will lose that proportion of the &#039;&#039;&#039;maximum&#039;&#039;&#039; grade upon each successive attempt. For example, if the default question grade is 10, and the penalty factor is 0.2, then each successive attempt after the first one will incur a penalty of 0.2 x 10 = 2 points.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Question rendering==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The question answer INPUT HTML ELEMENT ( Short and Numerical) or SELECT HTML ELEMENT (multichoice) are normally displayed in-line with the text.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The size of INPUT HTML ELEMENT ( Short and Numerical) will be adjustable to the length of the longest answer (good or bad) + a random number (0 to 15% total length).([[User:Pierre Pichet|Pierre Pichet]] 15:37, 26 January 2008 (CST))&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The size will adjust to the length of the student response when displayed in the grading and feedback process.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The size of the SELECT HTML ELEMENT (multichoice) adjusts itself automatically to the longest answer.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Format==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Questions consist of a passage of text (in Moodle format) that has various sub-questions embedded within it, including&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* short answers (SHORTANSWER or SA or MW), case is unimportant,&lt;br /&gt;
* short answers (SHORTANSWER_C or SAC or MWC), case must match,&lt;br /&gt;
* numerical answers (NUMERICAL or NM),&lt;br /&gt;
* multiple choice (MULTICHOICE or MC), represented as a dropdown menu in-line in the text&lt;br /&gt;
* multiple choice (MULTICHOICE_V or MCV), represented a vertical column of radio buttons, or&lt;br /&gt;
* multiple choice (MULTICHOICE_H or MCH), represented as a horizontal row of radio-buttons.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The structure of  each cloze is identical:&lt;br /&gt;
:&#039;&#039;&#039;{&#039;&#039;&#039;  start the cloze with a bracket (AltGr+7)&lt;br /&gt;
:&#039;&#039;&#039;1&#039;&#039;&#039; define a grade for each cloze by  a number. they are used for calculation of question grading.&lt;br /&gt;
:&#039;&#039;&#039;:SHORTANSWER:&#039;&#039;&#039; define the type of cloze. Definition is bounded by &#039;:&#039;. &lt;br /&gt;
:&#039;&#039;&#039;~&#039;&#039;&#039; is a seperator between answer options&lt;br /&gt;
:&#039;&#039;&#039;=&#039;&#039;&#039; marks a correct answer&lt;br /&gt;
:&#039;&#039;&#039;}&#039;&#039;&#039;  close the cloze at the end with a bracket (AltGr+0)&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Now a very simple example:&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;pre&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
{1:SHORTANSWER:=Berlin} is the capitol of Germany.&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/pre&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For full details of the format for embedded-answers questions, see the [[Embedded_Answers_%28Cloze%29_question_type#Detailed_syntax_explanations|detailed syntax explanation]] below.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
NB: Be careful when copying a cloze type question into the WYSIWYG HTML editor, as line breaks tend to get added, which destroys the question.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If the correct answer contains } # ~ / &amp;quot; or \ you will have to escape them by putting a \ in front of each such character. The { shouldn&#039;t be escaped, this can be vital in getting TeX expressions to work. In the feedback ~ and } must be escaped otherwise it will be interpreted as &#039;&#039;the next answer&#039;&#039; or &#039;&#039;end of the short answer section&#039;&#039; respectively. Quotation signs: &amp;quot; can lead to trouble anyhow in both places. Use the HTML entity: &amp;amp; quot; (without the space between &#039;&#039;&amp;amp;&#039;&#039; and &#039;&#039;quot;&#039;&#039;). If you want to have Mathematical symbols there can be problems with the \ used in TeX expressions. One alternative can be to use [[unicode]] characters. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
See the notes further down about numerical embedded question!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Examples===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
====Example 1====&lt;br /&gt;
The following text creates a simple embedded-answers question:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
 Match the following cities with the correct state:&lt;br /&gt;
 * San Francisco: {1:MULTICHOICE:=California#OK~Arizona#Wrong}&lt;br /&gt;
 * Tucson: {1:MULTICHOICE:California#Wrong~%100%Arizona#OK}&lt;br /&gt;
 * Los Angeles: {1:MULTICHOICE:=California#OK~Arizona#Wrong}&lt;br /&gt;
 * Phoenix: {1:MULTICHOICE:%0%California#Wrong~=Arizona#OK}&lt;br /&gt;
 The capital of France is {1:SHORTANSWER:%100%Paris#Congratulations!&lt;br /&gt;
 ~%50%Marseille#No, that is the second largest city in France (after&lt;br /&gt;
 Paris).~*#Wrong answer. The capital of France is Paris, of course.}.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
And the result will be:&lt;br /&gt;
 &lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:Cloze.gif|Cloze question type]] &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
====Example 2====&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;div style=&amp;quot;padding: 1em;border: 1px dashed #FFB53A;color: black;background-color: #f9f9f9;font-family: monospace;font-size:1.2em;&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
This question consists of some text with an answer embedded right here {1:MULTICHOICE:Wrong answer#Feedback for this wrong answer~Another wrong answer#Feedback for the other wrong answer~=Correct answer#Feedback for correct answer~%50%Answer that gives half the credit#Feedback for half credit answer}&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
and right after that you will have to deal with this short answer {1:SHORTANSWER:Wrong answer#Feedback for this wrong answer~=Correct answer#Feedback for correct answer~%50%Answer that gives half the credit#Feedback for half credit answer}&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
and finally we have a floating point number {2:NUMERICAL:=23.8:0.1#Feedback for correct answer 23.8~%50%23.8:2#Feedback for half credit answer in the nearby region of the correct answer}.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The  multichoice question can also be shown in the vertical display of the standard moodle multiple choice.&lt;br /&gt;
{2:MCV:1. Wrong answer#Feedback for this wrong answer~2. Another wrong answer#Feedback for the other wrong answer~=3. Correct answer#Feedback for correct answer~%50%4. Answer that gives half the credit#Feedback for half credit answer}&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Or in an horizontal display that is included here in a table&lt;br /&gt;
{2:MCH:a. Wrong answer#Feedback for this wrong answer~b. Another wrong answer#Feedback for the other wrong answer~=c. Correct answer#Feedback for correct answer~%50%d. Answer that gives half the credit#Feedback for half credit answer}&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A shortanswer question where case must match. Write moodle in upper case letters {1:SHORTANSWER_C:moodle#Feedback for moodle in lower case ~=MOODLE#Feedback for MOODLE in upper case ~%50%Moodle#Feedback for only first letter in upper case}&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Note that addresses like www.moodle.org and smileys :-) all work as normal:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
a) How good is this? {:MULTICHOICE:=Yes#Correct~No#We have a different opinion}&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
b) What grade would you give it? {3:NUMERICAL:=3:2}&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/div&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:Cloze example.png]]&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Some things to note:&lt;br /&gt;
* The individual embedded answers are represented by the code in braces {}.&lt;br /&gt;
* The number at the start is the &#039;weight&#039;, so in this case each answer contributes an equal share of the overall grade.&lt;br /&gt;
* The correct option in each case is preceded either by an = sign or by %100%. &lt;br /&gt;
:&#039;&#039;&#039;Note&#039;&#039;&#039;: [[Talk:Embedded_Answers_(Cloze)_question_type| The equal sign (=) doesn&#039;t seem to work with SHORTANSWER.]]&lt;br /&gt;
* The text appearing after the # that follows each option is the feedback that the student will see if they choose that option.&lt;br /&gt;
* If the student enters &#039;Marseille&#039; in the final example, they score 50% of the total grade.&lt;br /&gt;
* The asterisk * preceding the &amp;quot;Wrong answer&amp;quot; feedback in the final example means that the student will see this feedback if they enter anything other than &amp;quot;Paris&amp;quot; or &amp;quot;Marseille&amp;quot;.&lt;br /&gt;
* For multiple choice vertical or horizontal rendering there is no automatic numbering, though can added at each answer.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Detailed syntax explanations==&lt;br /&gt;
# all question items within a cloze-type question are coded inside curled braces { }&lt;br /&gt;
# the number which appears between the opening brace and the colon {1: is the weighting of that item; if it is set at 1 for all the items, it needs not be specified, so you can have {:&lt;br /&gt;
# after the colon we have the item question type: MULTICHOICE, SHORTANSWER, NUMERICAL&lt;br /&gt;
# &#039;&#039;&#039;NOTE&#039;&#039;&#039;.- If you have installed the [http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?d=13&amp;amp;rid=338 REGEXP question type plugin] you can also use the REGEXP question type&lt;br /&gt;
# the syntax for MULTICHOICE and SHORTANSWER is the same; the only difference is in the displaying of the item to the student&lt;br /&gt;
# the order of the various answers is indifferent (except if you want a catch-all for wrong answers, see #13 below)&lt;br /&gt;
# a correct answer is preceded with the equal sign = or a percentage (usually %100%) - &#039;&#039;&#039;Note&#039;&#039;&#039;: [[Talk:Embedded_Answers_(Cloze)_question_type| The equal sign (=) doesn&#039;t seem to work with SHORTANSWER.]]&lt;br /&gt;
# a wrong answer is preceded with nothing or a percentage (usually %0%)&lt;br /&gt;
# you can allocate some points between 0 and 100 to some answers, if you put the appropriate percentage&lt;br /&gt;
# all answers except the first one are separated from one another by the tilde ~ sign&lt;br /&gt;
# answers can be followed by an optional feedback message, preceded with the # sign; if there is no feedback message, the # sign can be present or absent, it does not matter&lt;br /&gt;
# note that the feedback message and (since [[User:Pierre Pichet|Pierre Pichet]] 24 May 2008 )in 1.9 the correct answer are displayed in a small popup window (if and when the correct and or feedback have been declared accessible to the students in the Quiz settings) upon mouse hovering. The popup window has a title &amp;quot;feedback&amp;quot; and you can use HTML tags to format your feedback. In some browsers (For example IE5.5) the form fields can cover part of the feedback windows. It can help to not have the formfields for the answers too close to each other.&lt;br /&gt;
# in the SHORTANSWER type you may want to put a catch-all (wrong) answer in order to send a &amp;quot;wrong, try again&amp;quot; feedback; you can do this by inserting an asterisk &#039;&#039;&#039;*&#039;&#039;&#039; as &#039;&#039;&#039;the very last expected answer&#039;&#039;&#039; in your formula&lt;br /&gt;
# unfortunately in MULTICHOICE MODE it is not possible to get the answers to be scrambled&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Numerical Cloze questions==	 &lt;br /&gt;
		 &lt;br /&gt;
From the student perspective, a numerical Cloze question looks just like a short-answer question or &#039;&#039;fill in the blanks&#039;&#039;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The difference is that numerical answers are allowed to have an accepted error. This allows a continuous range of answers to be set. You can also express your answer in some different numerical formats. 23.4 23,4 (some countries use , as a decimal separator) and 2.34E+1 (meaning 2.34*10^1) would be interpreted as the same.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
=== False positives ===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;Note:&#039;&#039;&#039; the following examples of false positives do &#039;&#039;&#039;not&#039;&#039;&#039; apply to Moodle 1.8+, where you cannot use percentages or fractions as the answers in a numerical Cloze test; Moodle will generate an error if you try to save such a question. However the following may be relevant for earlier versions of Moodle.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
 More examples:	 &lt;br /&gt;
 0.5 accepts .5 0.5 ,5 0,5 0.500 5e-1 5E-1 but not 1/2 50% 	 &lt;br /&gt;
 50% accepts 50% 50.0% 5E1% 50/100 even &#039;&#039;&#039;50/1000 50&#039;&#039;&#039; but not 500/1000 0.5	 &lt;br /&gt;
 1/2 accepts 1/2 &#039;&#039;&#039;1/3 1twenty&#039;&#039;&#039; but not 2/4 0.5 0,5 3/6 50% ½	 &lt;br /&gt;
 ½ accepts ½	 &lt;br /&gt;
 HALF doesn&#039;t even accept HALF (maybe &#039;&#039;&#039;0&#039;&#039;&#039;?)	 &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you want to accept several variants you can have them in the same {} but &#039;&#039;&#039;be careful, notice the &amp;quot;false positives&amp;quot; in bold&#039;&#039;&#039;!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Syntax for numerical Cloze questions===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The format of a NUMERICAL Cloze question is similar to that of the other Cloze types and they can be mixed in the same question. As with other Cloze tests, you write your question or incomplete text, and add the Cloze code at the point where the student is supposed to enter their numerical answer.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
An example of the syntax used is shown below:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;Note: &#039;&#039;&#039; It is preferable to write the code in &#039;source code&#039; mode. The WSIWYG editor can insert linebreaks that make the question not function. The linebreak in the example box below is for readability only! A problem with these questions is the readability of the code! :(	&lt;br /&gt;
		 &lt;br /&gt;
 {2:NUMERICAL:=23.8:0.1#Feedback for correct answer 23.8	 &lt;br /&gt;
 ~%50%23.8:2#Feedback for ½credit near correct answer}. 	 &lt;br /&gt;
	 &lt;br /&gt;
In this example:&lt;br /&gt;
* 2: is the question point weight, which means that this question has twice the weight in the final point(s) for this question as other partial answers with weight 1 (or no declared weight - you can start with {: for the default weight 1) in the same question.&lt;br /&gt;
* NUMERICAL: says what kind of question it is. It must be in CAPS. &lt;br /&gt;
* =23.8:0.1 = or %100% means correct if the answer is 23.8 with an accepted error of 0.1, then any number between 23.7 and 23.9 will be accepted as correct. (In the GIFT numerical question one can express an interval like this 13..15 or 14:1 but in Cloze only 14:1 works.)	 &lt;br /&gt;
* #Feedback for correct answer 23.8 is preceded by #&lt;br /&gt;
* ~%50%23.8:2 ~ is the separator for answer alternatives %50% means this answer would get 50% of the score that the more precise answer had gotten. Because the tolerance here is 2, 21.8 to 25.8 would get this point and feedback.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The feedback (which is seen within a popup window when the user hovers over the answer space) is formattable with HTML tags. For example, if you want an exponent, surround it with superscript tags: &amp;amp;lt;sup&amp;amp;gt; &amp;amp;lt;/sup&amp;amp;gt;. You can even include pictures in the feedback popup, but you must clean out all &amp;quot; characters and save while still in source code mode (not WYSIWYG). So, this works in feedback popup:&lt;br /&gt;
 #See this picture:&amp;amp;lt;br&amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;lt;img src=Something.gif /&amp;gt;}	 &lt;br /&gt;
but not this:&lt;br /&gt;
 #See this picture:&amp;amp;lt;br&amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;lt;img src=&amp;quot;Something.gif&amp;quot; /&amp;gt;}	 &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
(ALGEBRA and TEX filters don&#039;t work in the feedback popups, but they can be very useful in the question writing for math/science expressions). But you can use [[Unicode]] characters.	 &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you want to give feedback for any answer that didn&#039;t fit the intervals you already have specified feedback for, add some BIG general intervals, like for positive answers (if they aren&#039;t bigger than 20000 you could add:	 &lt;br /&gt;
 ~%0%10000.0001:10000#Feedback for unspecified not_right answers}	 &lt;br /&gt;
This would give feedback for anything from 0.0001 to 20000.0001 (that hadn&#039;t already gotten feedback). I didn&#039;t want to include 0 since that special case as well as negative ought to have specific reactions.	 &lt;br /&gt;
 ~%0%0#Hey! It can&#039;t be zero	 &lt;br /&gt;
 ~%0%-10000.0001:10000#We just want the size here,	 &lt;br /&gt;
 so a negative value is not what we want}			 &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Numerical questions could, before version 1.7, also have case-insensitive non-numerical answers. This is useful whenever the answer for a numerical question is something like +inf, -inf, NaN etc.&lt;br /&gt;
==Importing CLOZE questions==&lt;br /&gt;
If you try importing directly as CLOZE this text:&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;pre&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Single line per question! Match the following cities with the correct state:&lt;br /&gt;
* San Francisco: {1:MULTICHOICE:=California#OK~Arizona#Wrong}&lt;br /&gt;
* Tucson: {1:MULTICHOICE:California#Wrong~%100%Arizona#OK}&lt;br /&gt;
* Los Angeles: {1:MULTICHOICE:=California#OK~Arizona#Wrong}&lt;br /&gt;
* Phoenix: {1:MULTICHOICE:%0%California#Wrong~=Arizona#OK}&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The capital of France is {1:SHORTANSWER:%100%Paris#Congratulations!~%50%Marseille#No, that is the second largest city in France (after Paris).~*#Wrong answer. The capital of France is Paris, of course.}.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
23+ 0.8 = {2:NUMERICAL:=23.8:0.1#Feedback for correct answer 23.8 ~%50%23.8:2#Feedback for ½credit near correct answer}. 	 &amp;lt;/pre&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You would get all three questions as different parts of &#039;&#039;&#039;ONE question&#039;&#039;&#039;. (NOTE see that there are no linebreaks between the { } !)&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Multiple CLOZE questions can be imported using the XML format:&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;pre&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;?xml version=&amp;quot;1.0&amp;quot; encoding=&amp;quot;UTF-8&amp;quot;?&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;quiz&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;!-- question: 1  --&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;question type=&amp;quot;cloze&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;name&amp;gt;&amp;lt;text&amp;gt;Book Test #1&amp;lt;/text&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/name&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;questiontext&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;text&amp;gt;&amp;lt;![CDATA[..............]]&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/text&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/questiontext&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;generalfeedback&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;text&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/text&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/generalfeedback&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;shuffleanswers&amp;gt;0&amp;lt;/shuffleanswers&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/question&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;!-- question: 2 --&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;question type=&amp;quot;cloze&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;name&amp;gt;&amp;lt;text&amp;gt;Book Test #2&amp;lt;/text&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/name&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;questiontext&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;text&amp;gt;&amp;lt;![CDATA[............]]&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/text&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/questiontext&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;generalfeedback&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;text&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/text&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/generalfeedback&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;shuffleanswers&amp;gt;0&amp;lt;/shuffleanswers&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/question&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/quiz&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;/pre&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
You would put the question text icluding CLOZE code in the  .......  spaces.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
# All pages should call print_header, and supply a standard navigation path to be displayed in it. Where possible, it should look like: COURSE &amp;gt;&amp;gt; INDEX &amp;gt;&amp;gt; INSTANCE &amp;gt;&amp;gt; SUBPAGES...&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
==Buttons vs links==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This is a hard one to define ...&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Google Web Accelerator issue definitely provides some pointers here:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
# Actions which can modify the state of Moodle (data files, database, session information) should be performed through buttons&lt;br /&gt;
# At the very least, such actions which are implemented as links should forward to a confirmation page which *does* use buttons&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Language strings==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
# Use your own language strings in a separate file. Don&#039;tuse existing language files from moodle.php or other lang files. So translators can translate in the contexts in different ways as terms are used in the special learning culture.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==CSS naming==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* Don&#039;t add font, color or layout definitions in code. This belongs to CSS theme files.&lt;br /&gt;
* See [[Standards|theme standards]]&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Linking to help==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* Help buttons should be on the right of the thing (as an exception it can be left, if the thing is right-aligned)&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;div&gt;{{About Moodle}}&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Moodle is open source software. This is something that your average person is not aware of so finding out that it is &#039;free&#039; tends to lead immediately to the assumption of &#039;cheap&#039;. The first thing to do is find out what Open source really is and understand its consequences, namely that:&lt;br /&gt;
*Although the software is free (as in &#039;free beer&#039;), this does not mean that the company producing it is not making a lot of money from it in other ways&lt;br /&gt;
*You are guaranteed the right to copy, modify and redistribute the software, provided you guarantee those same rights to anyone you share it with&lt;br /&gt;
*These rights mean that a community of enthusiasts has developed who report bugs, fix bugs, test new code and write new code for plugins and extensions. This means that you have the efforts of the company + the efforts of the community going into it.&lt;br /&gt;
*Open source tends therefore to be more secure, more stable and to develop faster than equivalent closed source software&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
=Cultural=&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Support==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Moodle&#039;s open source nature means that there are far more avenues for support available than is the case for other LMS systems. &lt;br /&gt;
* Pop-up help - clicking the blue icons wherever you see then (almost all fields on forms and many other places) gives you access to the main help files that come with the distribution&lt;br /&gt;
* Moodle Docs (this site) is built by the community and is not only available to browse, but each page you see in Moodle has a link at the bottom, which goes to the corresponding documentation on Moodle Docs. This saves you from having to create your own training materials or website in-house and lets you combine any information you wish to provide with the sum of all the knowledge already accumulated&lt;br /&gt;
* Community forums - the &#039;using moodle&#039; course at moodle.org has thousands of dedicated teachers and programmers who are active in conversations every week. You can ask a direct question, or browse all the archived conversations going right back to 2001. You can speak to other teachers or directly to moodle&#039;s designers and programmers&lt;br /&gt;
* Paid for support contracts and service level agreements - moodle.com lists partner companies who will provide commercial support for your moodle installation. Instead of having to rely on one company to solve your problems or provide training (an effective monopoly, as with other systems), you have a number of companies competing for your training and support business, leading to lower prices and more choice&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Customisation==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Moodle&#039;s open source nature means that you own the system and have rights allowing you to change and modify it, rather than renting it &#039;as is&#039;, which is the case for many competing systems. This, combined with the huge community means that there are an enormous number of third party plugins available so that you can add functionality that is non-standard e.g. support for sending text messages, podcasting, new types of quiz question, 3D molecule models, etc). You can also commission a programmer (see moodle.com if you need one) to make any extra plugin or alteration you like, which if you post it up on moodle.org, others may well improve further for you.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Philosophy==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Moodle is based on a solid foundation of [[Pedagogy#Social_Constructionism_as_a_Referent|social constructionism]] (strong community, shared experiences, building things together for others to view and use) and grew out of postgraduate research by Martin Dougiamas, its founder. Other companies tend to be led by profit, leading to a focus on marketing to what school decision makers think they need, rather than what actually works best.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Innovation==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Moodle is not constrained by what will sell well, so the code that is developed, especially by third parties, is often at the cutting edge of educational thinking. The open source philosophy helps here too, as schools and universities often choose to have moodle enhanced for their own purposes and contribute their code back to the community. Recent examples include the new wiki, developed by a team at Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya and the new groups code developed by the UK Open University.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== Usability ==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;To support a host of automated and personalized services, such as self-paced and role-specific learning, the access, delivery and presentation of material must be easy-to-use and highly intuitive — like surfing on the Web or shopping on Amazon.com.&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Perhaps the best sentence to short Moodle usability is: &amp;quot;simple and powerful&amp;quot;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There is some talk about [[Usability|Moodle usability]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The [[Interface guidelines]] aim to help developers work towards a highly usable system. And the general consensus is that Moodle excels in this area.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
=Technical=&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== High availability ==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;The LMS must be robust enough to serve the diverse needs of thousands of learners, administrators, content builders and instructors simultaneously.&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Usage patterns will vary strongly with the specific context of the deployment. But in general, Moodle presents a high-availability web-based interface, allowing learners, tutors, and administrators routinely to log in and carry out their daily tasks. See the &#039;&#039;scalability&#039;&#039; section for other relevant information.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== Scalability ==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;The infrastructure should be able to expand or scale to meet future growth, both in terms of the volume of instruction and the size of the student body.&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Moodle runs on a wide variety of webservers/database technologies. As with any installation of a server-based software system, it is crucial to refine carefully the choice of hardware, operating system, and database system, to ensure that the system can cope with a high throughput. The largest live Moodle installation at time of writing (Open Polytechnic of New Zealand) handles 45,000+ students and 6,500+ courses registered. There is a page about other [[Large installations|large installations]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The consensus in the Moodle community seems to be that a Linux-based webserver running Apache, with PHP installed as well as a PHP accelerator, is commonly the best choice, and that the webserver and database server should sit on separate machines.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It should be possible to load-balance a Moodle installation, for example by using more than one webserver if necessary. The separate webservers should query the same database and refer to the same filestore area, but otherwise the separation of the application layers is complete enough to make this kind of clustering feasible. Similarly, the database could be a cluster of servers (e.g. a MySQL cluster).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
All this implies that Moodle&#039;s architecture makes it easy to respond to future demand, by adapting the technologies upon which it runs. This should be possible even in a live setting, to improve the service without major disruption.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== Interoperability ==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;To support content from different sources and multiple vendors&#039; hardware/software solutions, the LMS should exchange data using open industry standards for Web deployments.&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* For &#039;&#039;&#039;authentication&#039;&#039;&#039;, Moodle supports authenticating against LDAP, which is the most widely-used standard protocol for this purpose. It also supports authentication based on direct database lookup (e.g. in an external Oracle database), or on the Shibboleth protocol, or alternatively using IMAP, NNTP, CAS or FirstClass.&lt;br /&gt;
* For &#039;&#039;&#039;enrolment&#039;&#039;&#039;, Moodle supports the use of an LDAP server (e.g. Active Directory), and the [[IMS Enterprise]] standard (via a downloadable plugin).&lt;br /&gt;
* For &#039;&#039;&#039;content&#039;&#039;&#039;, there are a number of aspects:&lt;br /&gt;
** Moodle supports the import of Reusable Learning Objects packaged according to the SCORM/AICC/IMS Content Packaging standards.&lt;br /&gt;
** Quiz questions can be exported in the international standard IMS QTI 2 andseveral other formats.&lt;br /&gt;
** RSS newsfeeds can be integrated into a Moodle site or course.&lt;br /&gt;
** Forum discussions, glossary entries and database content can be accessed as RSS newsfeeds, and therefore integrated into other RSS-capable websites or systems.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The use of XML for import/export is standard in Moodle. The &amp;quot;web services&amp;quot; method of exchanging data with other systems (e.g. via SOAP or XML-RPC) is not yet standard - but is in active development.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== Stability ==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;The LMS infrastructure can reliably and effectively manage a large enterprise implementation running 24x7.&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This is the same issue as discussed in &#039;&#039;Availability&#039;&#039; and &#039;&#039;Scalability&#039;&#039; above.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== Security ==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;As with any outward-facing collaborative solution, the LMS can selectively limit and control access to online content, resources and back-end functions, both internally and externally, for its diverse user community.&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Moodle&#039;s current system of roles includes administrators, teachers, teachers without editing privileges (sometimes called teaching assistants), students, and guests. Each has a clearly defined set of privileges and cannot act beyond those privileges.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The basic unit of organisation is the &#039;&#039;course&#039;&#039;. An administrator can assign any number of teachers (with or without rights to edit content) to a given course, which has its own file area as well as its own discussions forums and other activities. Teachers can decide whether content is visible or hidden to students.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Moodle is designed and audited to be secure for its purpose. A security issues/announcements site exists at http://security.moodle.org&lt;br /&gt;

[[Image:Settings.gif]]&#039;&#039;&#039;Course settings&#039;&#039;&#039; control how the things appear to the participants in a course. It is the first page viewed after creating a course. It can be edited through the &#039;&#039;&#039;Settings&#039;&#039;&#039; link in the [[Course administration block]] menu.  This page has links to other pages that may describe a setting in more detail. Different versions of Moodle may not have all the settings listed below.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==General==&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:generalsettings1.gif|thumb|300px|General settings|center]]&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Full name===&lt;br /&gt;
The full name of the course is displayed at the top of the screen and in the course listings.  More advanced users can use [[Insert image|HTML code]] to add an image.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Short name===&lt;br /&gt;
Many institutions have a shorthand way of referring to a course, such as BP102 or COMMS.  Even if you do not already have such a name for your course, make one up here.  It will be used in several places where the long name is not appropriate.  The most common use is in the navigation bar that is at the top of most pages and this provides an active link to the course home page.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:Assignment nav trail.jpg|The underlined part is the course Short name.]]&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The above example has the short course name, &amp;quot;Features&amp;quot;.  The short name also appears in the subject line of email messages that are part of the course.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===ID number===&lt;br /&gt;
The ID number is an alphanumeric field.  It has several potential uses.  Generally, it is not displayed to students.  However, it can be used to match this course against an external system&#039;s ID, as your course catalog ID or can be used in the certificate module as a printed field.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Summary===&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:generalsettings2.gif|thumb|Course summary|center]]&lt;br /&gt;
The summary of the course is displayed in the course listings and in the coure&#039;s &amp;quot;course description&amp;quot; block.  It has the Moodle [[HTML editor]] tool bar, which will allow the teacher be creative.  Some sites may have a policy on the limits of teacher creativity in this particular area.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Format===&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:generalsettings3.gif|thumb|Format section in course settings|center]]&lt;br /&gt;
A Moodle course may use one of the following formats:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
====Weekly format==== &lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:Course top weekly mu1.jpg|thumb|left|100px|Weekly format example]] The course is organized week by week, with a clear start date and a finish date.  Moodle will create a section for each week of your course.  You can add content, forums, quizzes, and so on in the section for each week.  If you want all your students to work on the same materials at the same time, this would be a good format to choose.  &amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
====Topics format====&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:Course top topic mu1.jpg|thumb|left|100px|Topic format example]]A topic format is very similar to the weekly format, except that each &amp;quot;week&amp;quot; is called a topic.  A &amp;quot;topic&amp;quot; is not restricted to any time limit.  When you create a course using the topics format, you start by choosing the number of topics you will cover in your course.  Moodle then creates a section for each topic.  If your course design is concept-oriented, and students will be working through a range of concepts but not necessarily according to a fixed schedule, this is a good choice.&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
====Social format====&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:Course top social mu1.jpg|thumb|left|100px|Social format example]] This format is oriented around one main forum, the Social forum, which appears listed on the main page.  It is useful for situations that are more free form.  They may not even be courses.  For example, it could be used as a departmental notice board. &amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
If you change the course format from Social format to Weekly or Topics format delete the &#039;Social activities&#039; block. This block should only be used in the Social format and is normally not available in other course formats.&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
====LAMS course format====&lt;br /&gt;
[[LAMS|The Learning Activity Management System]] is an open source LMS which allows teachers to use a flash based authoring environment for developing learning sequences.  LAMS has been integrated with Moodle to allow teachers to develop LAMS activities within a Moodle course.  This course format makes LAMS central to the course, only displaying the LAMS interface.  If you are interested in using LAMS, check with your system administrator to see if they have installed and configured LAMS.  Very few institutions use LAMS as it duplicates much of the Moodle functionality.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
====SCORM format====&lt;br /&gt;
The [[SCORM/AICC module|Sharable Content Reference Model]] (SCORM) is a content packaging standard.  SCORM packages are self-contained bundles of content and JavaScript activities, which can send data to Moodle about the students score and current location.  Moodle can use SCORM packages as a content type (see [[SCORM/AICC module]]), or as a course format.  If you have a large SCORM object you want to use as an entire course, then you can select this course format and students will only be able to interact with the SCORM object, not the rest of the Moodle tools.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
====Weekly format, CSS/no tables (Moodle 1.6 onwards)====&lt;br /&gt;
The CSS / No Tables variant of the Weekly format displays the Weekly course format without using tables for layout.  This improves the accessibility of the format, but older browsers have trouble displaying it correctly.&lt;br /&gt;
====Page format (non-standard)====&lt;br /&gt;
This format is very similar to the Book resource format in a Moodle course. It consists of a theme, course format, and menu module which enables blocks and modules to be intermixed on a 3 column layout, provide tab based navigation through course content, inline display of resources and forums, etc.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Number of weeks/topics===&lt;br /&gt;
This setting is only used by the &#039;weekly&#039; and &#039;topics&#039; course formats.  In the &#039;weekly&#039; format, it specifies the number of weeks that the course will run for, starting from the course starting date.  In the &#039;topics&#039; format, it specifies the number of topics in the course.  Both of these translate to the number of &amp;quot;boxes&amp;quot; down the middle of the course page.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Course start date===&lt;br /&gt;
This is where you specify the starting time of the course (in your own time zone).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you are using a &#039;weekly&#039; course format, this will affect the display of the weeks.  The first week will start on the date you set here.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This setting will not affect courses using the &#039;social&#039; or &#039;topics&#039; formats.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
However, this setting will have an effect on the display of logs, which use this date as the earliest possible date you can display. It can also make your course not visible to students even if when the course is available to students (see below).  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In general, if your course does not have a real starting date then set the date to yesterday and use the availability setting to reveal the course to students.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Hidden sections===&lt;br /&gt;
This option allows you to decide how the hidden sections in your course are displayed to students.  By default, a small area is shown (in collapsed form, usually gray) to indicate where the hidden section is, though they still cannot actually see the hidden activities and texts.  This is particularly useful in the Weekly format, so that non-class weeks are clear, or if you have quizes you don&#039;t want your students to see.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you choose, these non-available items can be completely hidden, so that students do not even know  that sections or an activity in the course are hidden.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===News items to show===&lt;br /&gt;
A special forum called &amp;quot;[[News forum|News]]&amp;quot; appears in the &amp;quot;weekly&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;topics&amp;quot; course formats.  It is a good place to post notices for all students to see.  (By default, all students are subscribed to this forum, and will receive your notices by email.)&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This setting determines how many recent items appear on your course home page, in a news box on the right side called [[Latest News block]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you set it to &amp;quot;0 news items&amp;quot; then the latest news box will not appear.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Show grades===&lt;br /&gt;
Many of the activities allow [[Grades|grades]] to be set.  By default, the results of all grades within the course can be seen in the Grades page, available from the main course page for students and teachers.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If a teacher is not interested in using grades in a course, or just wants to hide grades from students, then they can disable the display of grades with this option.  This does not prevent the teacher using or setting grades for an individual activities, it just disables the results from being displayed to students.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Show activity reports===&lt;br /&gt;
[[Activity_report#Individual_Activity_Report|Activity reports]] are available to each student. These reports or logs shows their activity and contributions in the current course.  These reports include their detailed access log.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Student access to their own reports is controlled by the teacher via this course setting.  For some courses, these reports can be a useful tool for a student to reflect on their involvement and appearance within the online environment, but for some courses, this may not be necessary.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Teachers always have access to these reports.  Teachers can use the button or tab visible on each person’s profile page or use the [[Reports]] link in the course administration block.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Your site administrator may ask you to turn this feature off.  Showing activity reports can place a load on the server, slowing it down at times.  For large or long classes it may be more efficient to keep it off.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Maximum upload size===&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:Changeupload.jpg|thumb|Maximum upload size setting]]&lt;br /&gt;
This setting defines the largest size of file that can be uploaded by students in this course.  The site administrator can determine [[Site_policies#Maximum_uploaded_file_sizefile |sizes available]] for the teacher to select.  Teachers should be aware of a course&#039;s [[Files|file structure]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It is possible to further restrict this size through settings within each activity module.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Force===&lt;br /&gt;
If the site administrator has allowed the teacher to set a course [[Themes|theme]], this pull down menu will appear with a list of themes on the site.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Is this a meta course?===&lt;br /&gt;
A [[Metacourses|metacourse]] automatically enrolls its participants from other courses.  For example, for every course that is a &amp;quot;child&amp;quot; of the metacourse, all students in the child course are enrolled in the metacourse.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Enrolments==&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:generalsetting4.gif|thumb|Enrolment settings]]&lt;br /&gt;
===Enrolment plugins===&lt;br /&gt;
This setting allows you to choose an interactive [[Enrolment plugins|enrolment plugin]], such as [[Internal enrolment|internal enrolment]] or [[Paypal]]. If you use a non-interactive enrolment plugin, this setting has no effect.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Default role===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
From Moodle 1.7 onwards, a default course role, such as student, may be set.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Course enrollable===&lt;br /&gt;
This setting only affects interactive enrolment plugins, such as [[Internal enrolment|internal enrolment]] and [[Paypal]]. It has no affect at all on non-interactive plugins (e.g. External Database, LDAP). Setting it to &amp;quot;no&amp;quot; or if it is outside the specified date range will result in the student being told the course is &amp;quot;Not enrollable&amp;quot; and being returned to the front page, if they are attempting to enroll using an interactive plugin.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you are using Internal enrolment and you have not set an enrolment key, you should seriously consider setting this to &#039;&#039;No&#039;&#039; otherwise any user can enrol on your course.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Enrolment duration===&lt;br /&gt;
This setting specifies the number of days a student can be enrolled in this course (starting from the moment they enroll).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If this is set, then students are automatically unenrolled after the specified time has elapsed. This is most useful for rolling courses without a specific start or end time.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you do not set this then the student will remain in this course until they are manually unenrolled or the clean-up function to remove defunct students takes effect.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you have selected to manage this course as a metacourse, your enrolment period will not be used.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Set this value with care - setting it when not required is a common origin of the complaint,  &amp;quot;my students keep disappearing after n days&amp;quot;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Enrolment expiry notification==&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:generalsettings5.gif|thumb|Enrolment expiry notification settings]]&lt;br /&gt;
These settings determine whether teachers and/or students are notified that their enrolment is about to expire and how much notice they should be given.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Groups==&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:generalsettings6.gif|thumb|Groups settings]]&lt;br /&gt;
===Group mode===&lt;br /&gt;
Here you can define the [[Groups|group mode]] at the course level by a pull down menu. &amp;quot;[[Groups#No_groups|No groups]]&amp;quot;, &amp;quot;[[Groups#Separate_groups|Separate groups]]&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;[[Groups#Visible_groups|Visible groups]]&amp;quot; are the choices. The selected setting will be the default group mode for all activities defined within that course.  The group setting can affect what users see in the [[Participants]] list. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Note you may leave it set to &amp;quot;No groups&amp;quot; and still have specific activities use groups. In this case the force setting below should be set to &amp;quot;no&amp;quot;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For example, the teacher can use a group setting to completely separate cohorts of students such that each group is unaware of the other in the course.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Force===&lt;br /&gt;
If the group mode is &amp;quot;forced&amp;quot; at a course-level, then this particular group mode will be applied to every activity in that course. This will override any activities that may have a special group setting.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The force setting is useful when the teacher wants to set up a course and not have to change each activities group settings.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Availability==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:generalsettings7.gif|thumb|Availability settings]]&lt;br /&gt;
This option allows you to &amp;quot;hide&amp;quot; your course completely. It will not appear on any course listings, except to teachers of the course and administrators. Even if students try to access the course URL directly, they will not be allowed to enter.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
*Note: the Start Date of the course can also effect course visibility.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Enrolment key===&lt;br /&gt;
A course [[Enrolment key|enrolment key]] enables access to courses to be restricted to those who know the key.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If left blank, then anyone who has created a Moodle username on the site will be able to enrol in the  course.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If a key is specified, then students who are trying to enter will be asked to supply the key. Once enrolled, Students are not required to enter an enrolment key to gain access.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The idea is that Teachers supply the key to authorized people using another means like private email, snail mail, on the phone or even verbally in a face-to-face class.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If this password &amp;quot;gets out&amp;quot; and you have unwanted people enrolling, you can unenrol them (see their user profile page) and change this key. Any legitimate students who have already enrolled will not be affected, but the unwanted people will not be able to get back in.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you are using a non-interactive enrolment, system (e.g., External Database, LDAP) and you do not want students who fail the initial check to be asked for an enrolment key that they will not have, set &#039;&#039;Course Enrolable&#039;&#039; to &#039;&#039;No&#039;&#039;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Guest access===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Allows any authenticated user (i.e. logged in) to access the course (as a [[Guest role|guest]]), including those who have logged in &amp;quot;as guest&amp;quot;. You can choose if they need an enrolment key or may enter without one. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
People can log in as guests using the &amp;quot;Login as a guest&amp;quot; button on a login screen, where that feature is enabled for the site. When the user tries to enter a course, they will see the [[Log in|login screen]]. If you only need people authenticated via your normal authentication method to access courses (as Guest or not) it is probably wise to disable &amp;quot;Login as a guest&amp;quot; for a slight improvement in site security. See [[Manage authentication]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Guests in a course ALWAYS have &amp;quot;read-only&amp;quot; access - meaning they cannot leave any posts or otherwise mess up the course for real students.  No use information is stored for a guest.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This can be handy when you want to let a colleague in to look around at your work, or to let students see a course before they have decided to enroll.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Note that you have a choice between two types of guest access: with the enrolment key or without. If you choose to allow guests who have the key, then the guest will need to provide the current enrolment key EVERY TIME they log in (unlike students who only need to do it once). This lets you restrict your guests. If you choose to allow guests without a key, then anyone can get straight into your course.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For more information see [[Guest role]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Cost===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If [[Paypal]] or [[Authorize.net Payment Gateway]] is set as the [[Enrolment plugins|enrolment plugin]], then the course cost can be set in the cost field.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Language==&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:generalsettings8.gif|thumb|Language settings]]&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you force a language in a course, the interface of Moodle in this course will be in this particular language, even if a student has selected a different preferred language in his/her personal profile.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Role renaming==&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:rolesimages.gif|thumb|Role renaming settings]]&lt;br /&gt;
{{Moodle 1.9}}In Moodle 1.9 onwards, you can rename the [[Roles|roles]] used in your course. For example, you may wish to rename the [[Teacher role]] as &amp;quot;Facilitator&amp;quot;, &amp;quot;Tutor&amp;quot; or &amp;quot;Guide&amp;quot;. These new role names will appear within the course. For example on the [[Participants|participants]] and the override permissions pages. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Please note that the site administrator or a [[Course managers|course manager]] may have changed the names or added new roles.  These names will appear and the teacher may rename them.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Any roles which are not used in your course i.e. they don&#039;t appear on the participants page, such as the [[Administrator role]] or the [[Authenticated user role]], can be ignored.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
[[Roles FAQ]] contains information on changing the name for teacher in Moodle 1.7 and 1.8. Prior to Moodle 1.7, the words for teacher and student may be changed in the course settings.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;div&gt;{{Course admin}}&lt;br /&gt;
[[Image:Scales_Icon.GIF]]Scales are a way of evaluating or rating a students&#039; performance. Moodle offers a standard set of numeric scales. It is also possible to create custom scales which can be available on the site. For example, you can give the student a word or small phrase as a way of rating or giving a student feedback. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Scales may be used in [[Forums]], [[Glossaries]] and [[Assignments]] for rating and/or [[Grades|grading]] a student&#039;s activity. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Standard scales==&lt;br /&gt;
Moodle includes 100 different numeric scales which can not be edited, and one non-numeric example.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Numeric===&lt;br /&gt;
Moodle includes numeric scales that range from a maximum of 100 to a maximum of 1.  For example, selecting a scale of 10, will allow a rating on a scale between 10 and 1. Numeric scales can be calculated as a [[Grades|grade]]. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Included non numeric scales===&lt;br /&gt;
Included in the standard 1.9 Moodle install is a scale called &amp;quot;Separate and Connected ways of knowing&amp;quot;.  This has 3 elements: &amp;quot;Mostly Separate Knowing&amp;quot;, &amp;quot;Separate and Connected&amp;quot;, &amp;quot;Mostly Connected Knowing&amp;quot;. These phrases relate to a theory about how people approach the world. In edit mode, the teacher or administrator can see the scale description which explains the use of this interesting rating system.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Creating a new scale==&lt;br /&gt;
New scales can be created by teachers with editing rights or by administrators or by any user with the [[Capabilities/moodle/course:managescales|manage scales role capability]] (Moodle 1.7 onwards).  Since 1.9 the scales can be edited in the Gradebook Menu Scales. The process is similar for making a new scale for either a course or site.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Creating course scales===&lt;br /&gt;
#Scales are located in the Grades in the course administration block. &lt;br /&gt;
##For versions of Moodle prior to 1.9, click on the Scales link in the course [[Administration block]] (highlighted in red in the screenshot).[[Image:moodle19 adminbox scales.jpg|thumb|Moodle 1.8 course administration block]] In Moodle 1.9 onwards, click on the Grades link in the course Administration block, then select Scales from the Edit section of the grader report Choose an action dropdown list.&lt;br /&gt;
#On the Scales page click the &amp;quot;Add a new scale&amp;quot; button.&lt;br /&gt;
#On the next page give your scale a name in the Name box (highlighted in red in the screenshot) that will identify it among other scales.[[Image:moodle19 scales edit.jpg|center|thumb|Creating a new scale screen: Name, Scale, Description areas]]&lt;br /&gt;
#In the Scale box (highlighted in green), create your scale. Each item in the scale should be separated by a comma. You can use as many options here as you require. You must order the comma  separated elements in increasing order of value. For example, an A,B,C,D scale must be entered as D,C,B,A.&lt;br /&gt;
**For example, you could include a four option scale &#039;&#039;refer, pass, merit, distinction&#039;&#039; or &#039;&#039;Hesitant (Fail), Acceptable, Average, Excellent&#039;&#039; depending on your curriculum/course needs. &lt;br /&gt;
#Write a detailed description in the Description box (highlighted in blue) for your scale. Your students will have access to the description, and you can use this to give them additional feedback. The more details you put in the description, the more students will understand what each scale item means.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Creating a site scale===&lt;br /&gt;
Creating scales that are available in every course is similar to creating one for a single course. The site administrator will find a Scales link in the site administration block under Grades.   It will list the scales available on the site, except the standard numeric sales.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
**In older versions of Moodle, Administrators has to create a site-wide  scales by &amp;quot;promoting&amp;quot; a scale created for a course. To achieve this, add a new scale in any course, then use the move down arrow to move the scale from custom scales to standard scales (i.e. site-wide).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Using a scale==&lt;br /&gt;
First the teacher needs to assign a specific scale to the activity using a drop down menu in the activities setting. Then the teacher and/or students can rate an activity element (for example, a post in a forum) with the pre-defined scale.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Editing a scale==&lt;br /&gt;
A scale can only be edited if no activities are using that scale.  If this is the case, you will see an Edit, move Down, and Delete icon in the edit column.[[Image:moodle19 scales edit buttons.jpg|Editing a scale]] &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Example scales==&lt;br /&gt;
===The Cool Scale===&lt;br /&gt;
*&#039;&#039;The Cool Scale&#039;&#039; - The coolest thing ever!, Very cool, Cool, Fairly cool, Not very cool, Not cool&lt;br /&gt;
===Affirmative Scale===&lt;br /&gt;
*&#039;&#039;General Introductions (The Affirmative Scale)&#039;&#039; - Welcome!, Glad to have you here!, Great post!&lt;br /&gt;
===Complete===&lt;br /&gt;
If you would like two options in your scale (incomplete and complete) type &amp;quot;incomplete, complete&amp;quot; in the scale box.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Generic Social forum scale===&lt;br /&gt;
*&#039;&#039;Generic Social Forum&#039;&#039; (This scale only worked prior to the averaging function) - Awesome!,  Very cool.,  Interesting.,  Hmmm.  Tell me more., I don’t understand.  Please clarify.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Graphic character scales===&lt;br /&gt;
It is possible to use a special set of characters as scales.  For example in Moodle.org forums use a set of 5 stars (outlined and filled).  The filled in stars advancing as the rating is higher. &lt;br /&gt;
**Caution.  Special graphic characters can be dependent upon the browser, the loaded character sets and other variables that may not produce the same result for every student.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;

*Official tags - added by an administrator and available for any site user. Official tags are added in the Website-Administration Block under Appearence -&amp;gt; Manage Tags (Moodle 1.9). In former versions admins added official tags while editing a blog post in a separate field.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you need to add official tags as a teacher, contact your administrator and ask for the capability [[Capabilities/moodle/blog:manageofficialtags|moodle/blog:manageofficialtags]] to be allowed. This capability has been deprecated in Moodle 1.9.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;hr /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;In [http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=76912 this forum thread] I summarise the position we have got ourselves into with the HTML editor. Moodle uses a WYSYG HTML editor called HTML area, which is now discontinued. We really want to switch to one of three other choices, but before we can do so, we need to work out exactly which Moodle-specific customisations we have made to HTML area to integrate it with Moodle, so we can make the same customisations to whichever editor we adopt in its place.--[[User:Tim Hunt|Tim Hunt]] 12:57, 29 July 2007 (CDT)&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Summarly of the customisations we already know about==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
# Integrate the add image dialog with the Moodle course files area.&lt;br /&gt;
# Integration with Moodle&#039;s internationalisation system, instead of HTMLarea&#039;s one. Done via lang/en.php.&lt;br /&gt;
# Changes to integrate with roles and capabilites.&lt;br /&gt;
# Accessibility changes in Moodle 1.8, including making the editor code XHTML strict.&lt;br /&gt;
# Bug fixes.&lt;br /&gt;
# Usability. Should use the same processes like moodle uses at other places.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Hopefully any replacement editor we choose will follow accessibility best-practice and have known bugs fixed, 4) and 5) should not be required when integrating a new editor. However, we shoud audit the code of any new editor to make sure it is XHTML strict.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
3) we should be able to find all the ways capabilites are used in the current editor by searching for the has_capability calls.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
2) Will have to be redone, but is pretty trivial. (but not completed in existing editor (3thrd row of menu is not translatable) &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
1) is the only potentially difficult one.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
6) Today the logic of file management in HTML editor is an other one than at the moodle file manager (i.e. Editor: choose file by click on the file name, File management: choose file by click on action). If it is not possible  we have to think about the process in Moodle file manager.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Three possible replacements==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
All three of these are widely used by other open source projects, are under active development, with a release since May 2007.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Of these, only TinyMCE currently claims to support Safari, although FCK is aiming at it, and give a good justification why it is not there yet: http://dev.fckeditor.net/wiki/Compatibility&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===[http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/ TinyMCE]===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
LGPL licensed&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===[http://xinha.webfactional.com/ Xinha]===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When HTMLarea was discontinued, this project was set up to continue development. Approximately BSD licenced.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===[http://www.fckeditor.net/ FCKeditor]===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
GPL, LGPL or MPL tri-licence. I once talked to some people who had successfully got FCK editor working with moodle.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==Detailed analysis of Moodle-specific changes from the CVS logs==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Unmodified files===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
These were checked in to their current location (lib/editor/htmlarea) on 3rd April 2006 with the comment &amp;quot;Moving old editor to htmlarea folder.&amp;quot; by [http://moodle.org/user/view.php?id=4057&amp;amp;course=5 Janne Mikkonen], who is the default assignee of editor bugs in the tracker.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I don&#039;t yet know where these files lived before the move, so I can&#039;t look further back in history than this yet.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
From the readme, the code is based on HTMLarea 3.0 beta.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* images/* (except for images/kbhelp.gif).&lt;br /&gt;
* lang/en.js&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/about.html&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/blank.html&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/dialog.css&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/editor_help.html&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/popup.js&lt;br /&gt;
* dialog.js&lt;br /&gt;
* htmlarea.css&lt;br /&gt;
* index.html (blank file)&lt;br /&gt;
* license.txt&lt;br /&gt;
* popupdiv.js&lt;br /&gt;
* popupwin.js (well there were some changes, but only to the language of some comments.)&lt;br /&gt;
* release-notes.html&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===Files with only XHTML strict and bugfix changes===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/createanchor.php&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/dialog_ins_char.&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/dialog_ins_smile.php&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/fullscreen.js&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/insert_image_std.php&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/insert_image.php&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/insert_table.php&lt;br /&gt;

* popups/link.php&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/preview.php&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/searchandreplace.php&lt;br /&gt;
* popups/select_colour.php&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===images/kbhelp.gif===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Added 30th November 2006 by [http://moodle.org/user/view.php?id=86470&amp;amp;course=5 Vy-Shane Sin Fat] with comment &amp;quot;New help button for keyboard shortcuts.&amp;quot; - part of the Moodle 1.8 accessibility work.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===lang/en.php===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This is a Moodle-specific file to make HTML area use Moodle&#039;s internationalisation system, instead of the one built into HTMLarea.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===plugins/GetHTML/get-html.js===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This plugin was added on 3rd June 2006 by Janne Mikkonen. One change since then, to fix [http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-6106 MDL-6106] by [http://moodle.org/user/view.php?id=12863&amp;amp;course=5 Petr Škoda].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===plugins/SpellChecker/*===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There are loads of files in here. I have not looked at them at all.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===plugins/TableOperations/*===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There are loads of files in here. I have not looked at them at all.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===coursefiles.php===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Integration with course files, obviously Moodle specific.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===htmlarea_bak.php===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
What a suspicious file name. Should this really be in CVS? Has had a few minor changes made. Is quite like htmlarea.php, but with quite a lots of changes too, according to diff.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===htmlarea.class.php===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Some minor changes for XHTML-strictness.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
===htmlarea.php===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Loads of changes (we are up to revision 1.20), which I have not analysed yet.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
