The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy & Cosmo Girl: Sex & Text: Results from a Survey of Teens and Young Adults (surveys fielded in late 2008)

• How many teens say they have sent or posted nude or semi nude videos or pictures of themselves?

o 20% of teens overall

o 22% of teen girls

o 18% of teen boys

o 11% of young teen girls (ages 13 - 16)

• How many teens are sending or posting sexually suggestive messages?

o 39% of all teens

o 37% of teen girls

o 40% of teen boys

o 48% of teens say they have received such messages

More stats:

• 71% of teen girls and 67% of teen guys who have sent or posted sexually suggestive content say that they have sent or posted this content to a boyfriend or girlfriend.

• 38% of teen girls and 39% of teen guys say they have had sexually suggestive content meant for somebody else shared with them!

• 44% of both teen girls and boys say it is common for sexually suggestive text messages to get shared with other people than the intended recipient.

Pew Internet: Teens, Online Stranger Contact & Harassment: What the data tells us (April 2008)

• 32% of online teens have experienced one of the following forms of harassment:

o 15% of teens reported having private material (IM, txt, email) forwarded without permission

o 13% had received threatening messages

o 13% said someone spread a rumor about them online

o 6% had someone post an embarrassing picture of them online without picture of them online without permission

• Mid teens (14-17 year olds) is the age of greatest prevalence of online harassment bullying.

• Perpetrators of online bullying are generally the same age as their victim.

• 5% of 11-16 year olds reported being bullied via cell phone text messaging less often than monthly

• 10% of 11-16 year olds say they were bullied on the internet less than monthly, 3% said they were bullied once or twice a month

Cell phone usage

• Four out of five teens (17 million) carry a wireless device (a 40% increase since 2004). o A majority (57%) of teens view their cell phone as the key to their social life.

o Second only to clothing, teens say, a person’s cell phone tells the most about their social status or popularity, outranking jewelry, watches and shoes.

o 80% say their cell phone provides a sense of security while on the go, confirming that the cell phone has become their mobile safety net when needing a ride (79%), getting important information (51%), or just helping out someone in trouble (35%).

Texting

o Teens admitted spending nearly an equal amount of time talking as they do texting each month. The feature is so important to them that if texting were no longer an option 47% of teens say their social life would end or be worsened - that’s especially so among females (54% vs. 40%).

o 74% of teens use texting frequently and 64% said they love it and would die without it.
