Moodle has a wonderful "algebra filter" which can easily make mathematical expressions in classic layout. I'm surprised that no one has written it up here! The filter is included in the standard Moodle packages. The administrator must activate it though before you can use it.

I personally think that students should be taught to recognize and use expressions that can be written in one line just the same as one enters them in a spreadsheet or when entering on a calculator. Having that ability also increases the ease of making interactive math problems.

The algebra filter can take expressions written in that way (like you would enter them in a spreadsheet cell) and display them the way we usually write them by hand or in math books. You simply surround the expression with double @:

@@y=(x+2)^2/(3x)@@

@@cosh(x,2)-sinh(x,2)=1@@

Unfortunately this Moodle Docs Site doesn't have the algebra filter (activated?) so you can't see here how nice they look. (There is a LaTeX math formula button in the wiki editor, but it doesn't recognize TeX or Algebra filter expressions, and I don't find any docs for THAT either!)

For more advanced expressions that the algebra filter doesn't cope with there is the TeX filter that can basically do any math expression. The syntax there is more complicated. and the expressions are surrounded (in Moodle) by double $. Here is a good wiki about TeX notation: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Formula

(The algebra filter is actually a simplified front end for a TeX engine)

There are some Moodle Glossaries: one with algebra and TeX and several with only TeX examples (in several languages) here:
http://moodle.org/mod/glossary/view.php?id=2739&mode=letter&hook=M&sortkey=CREATION&sortorder=asc

What you can see under the introduction text to the forum depends on which of the three options you have chosen in the '''Forum type''' field while [[Creating a forum|creating the forum]].

# If you have chosen '''A single simple discussion''', you will see the text you have written at the 'Forum introduction' space while creating the forum as the first post of the discussion: there will be a heading, which is the forum name, the information about the author and its date. Below you will find the replies that have been posted (if there are any).
# If you have chosen '''Standard forum for general use''', you will see the introduction text in a separate space above the discussion field, in which you will see the information such as the title of the discussion (which means the forum's title), its author, the number of replies and the date of the last post.
# Choosing '''Each person posts one discussion''' the view will be basically the same as in the previous case, the only difference being the 'Add a new discussion' option. Viewing a forum page, you will see the text you have written at the 'Forum introduction' space while creating the forum, and, if there are any, the discussions that have been started.

In all cases, above the introduction to the forum you will find options concerning [[Mod/forum/subscribers|subscription to the forum]] as well as the 'Update the forum' button and the 'Jump to' field, with which you can 'jump' to any part of the course.

The 1.5 Moodle has the "Type" (group, teacher, student) setting in the wiki settings. The "Group Mode" setting (No group, seperate groups and visible groups) is a course setting. The 9 combinations of group and type settings determine what an individual student can see or edit.

The 1.8 Moodle will have both setting Type (group, teacher, student) and an additional setting called Group Mode (No group, seperate groups and visible groups).

== Wiki auto linking option ==
CamelCase notation describes multiple words, joined together without spaces, separated by changes in case. The uppercase and lowercase letters show up like the humps of camels. It is often also called BumpyText because it could look like CaMeL_CaSe.

Autolinking is not always desirable. Some text is writen in CamelCase. For example a file name might be MyFile_2007_Feb.jpg .

==Importing multiple events==

Currently there is no way to import data to create multiple events. All events must be individually entered through the New Event button. Because the New Event data entry screen only allows drop down selection rather than typed entries, it is very difficult to design a macro for quick repeated input of New Events.

The only other option is to directly connect to the central moodle [SQL] database and directly enter data into the events table. ''Great care'' needs to be taken with this approach as alterations to the data structure may cause your moodle site to crash!
To convert MS Excel dates to moodle Unix dates use: Unix date integer =((Excel date integer)-25569)*86400

==List format==
The calendar displays even lists one day at a time. There is no capacity to display a list of all site or course events over an extended period. To obtain date lists for publications, the only option is to link directly to the SQL database, select by the "courseid" and perform calculations to convert the UNIX "timestart" to a publishable date format:

Using a Microsoft Access query, collect data from the '''mdl_event''' table and create 2 calculated fields:

*'''calcdate''': DateValue("1/1/1970")+[timestart]/60/60/24+10/24
*'''daysavdate''': IIf([calcdate] Between #2/04/2006# And #29/10/2006#,[calcdate],[calcdate]+1/24)

Then, use additional calculated fields to seperate the date, day of week and time (if needing to be formatted seperately:

*Dte: Format([daysavdate],"mmm dd")
*DayName: Format([daysavdate],"ddd")
*Tme: Format([daysavdate],"hh:nn am/pm")

PS: The dates for daylight saving need to be changed each year to match your location.
PS: Very breif summary process for creating connection to moodle database in Windows environment: Install MySQL OBDC Driver 3.51 / Start settings control panel / admin tools/ Data Sources/ ODBC / add new service/ select MySQL ODBC driver/ follow prompts for User & password/ open access/ get external data/ point to MySQL ODBC connection

==Navigating months==
There is no easy way to jump to a specific month in the year other than to directly edit the URL variable for month "m=" : calendar/view.php?view=month&cal_d=1&cal_'''m=02'''&cal_y=2006
