Talk:Navigation overhaul specification

"Both the navigation block and the administration block can potentially have lots of nodes in them, resulting in what is popularly derided as the "scroll of death". We posit that a good navigation system should be simple and concise, and not necessarily contain the entire site map."

IMHO Scroll of death is more having so much content in a linear layout that it's impossible to navigate, rather than there being too many nodes in either of the blocks. However both influence each other: Lots of content in a straight list introduces navigation issues, however if the navigation only presents straight lists then likely to get content that simply reinforces it --Michael Hughes (talk) 21:42, 3 June 2014 (WST)

@Michael: Thanks for the comment! You're correct that each influences the other; and if you're seeking to influence us in the direction of a holistic approach to that kind of thing, I agree completely. While we're still in early discussions, it's envisaged that placing more control in course formats would help to ameliorate this, for example:

  • instead of a naive week-on-week course format, we could have a format that groups future weeks by the month
  • instead of a list of activity subject areas, we could have a format that displays subject areas in a square or hex grid

Anything's possible!
