Workshop
Workshop is a powerful peer (and self) assessment activity. This quick guide takes you through the basics of setting up a workshop for your students. If you really want to make the most of everything a Workshop can do, make sure you study the full Workshop activity documentation.
__NOTOC__
Setting up your workshop
*In the course where you want your workshop, turn on the editing and from the Activity Chooser, select 'Workshop'.
*Give it a name and a description telling students what the workshop is about.
*Clicking the question mark icon next to any setting you don't understand will display extra help.
*If you're not sure about the Grading settings, leave them as default. Students get two grades - one for the work they submit and one for the quality of their peer assessments. You can change the default 80% and 20% if you wish and you can also set passing grades for both scores. It is usually only the students who do the assessing, although you as a teacher can assess too, and you can change individual student grades later on if you think it is necessary. The page Workshop grading strategies gives more information.
* The Submission settings is where you tell them what they must do for this task. They can type directly into Moodle or upload one or more files. You can let them submit late if you wish and you can specify which file types they are allowed to upload.
*The Assessment settings is where you tell them briefly what they are looking for when assessing the work of their peers. Don't give detailed instructions because this will be done later. You can let them assess their own work too, based on the more detailed criteria you will add later.
*Feedback will give the students the option of typing in some free text comments when they peer assess. You can make this optional, required or turn it off. They may also upload files as feedback, and you can specify which file types they may add. You can also add a conclusion to the workshop which will display when it is over.
*You might find it useful to give your students one or more Example submissions to practise on first. If you do, you can make them optional or required. You can force them to practise on any example submissions before they upload their own or afterwards before they do the peer-assessments.
*Think about whether, in the Availability section, you want the students to be given submissions to assess automatically once the submission deadline is over.

Workshop phases
Once saved, you will see the Workshop displayed like this:

A workshop moves between different phases. You can automate some phases and (if needed) you can move back a phase. You as teacher switch phases when you are ready by clicking the icon or text. The Setup phase will be highlighted because it's the phase you are in when you have just created the workshop.

Setup phase
*Click 'Edit assessment form' to provide detailed grading criteria for your students to use. When finished, click 'Save and close', and all ticks on the Setup phase will be the same colour.
*You are ready to switch to the Submission phase which lets students send in their work. Click the icon or text at the top of Submission phase. This phase will be highlighted.

Submission phase
*Students will now be able to submit their work during this time, until any deadline you specified - unless you also allowed late submissions.
*Click the link 'Allocate submissions' to decide if you yourself want to choose which student assesses whose work (Manual allocation), or if you want Moodle to choose for you (Random allocation) And do you want students to assess others' work even if they have not submitted anything themselves?
*If,in the Availability section you set the workshop to switch to the submission phase automatically once the submission deadline is over, choose Scheduled allocation.

*You can see how many have submitted and how many still need to submit. Click the icon or text to move to the Assessment phase if you chose to switch phases yourself. The phase will be highlighted. (Remember that you can move back a phase if you need to, for example if you want to allow a student to resubmit.)

Assessment phase
*Students will assess the work of their peers according to the instructions and criteria you gave them.
*You can monitor their progress by looking at the grades underneath the phases screen:

*When you are ready, click the icon or text to move to the Grading evaluation phase. This phase will be highlighted.

Grading evaluation phase
*Here, Moodle calculates the final grades for submission and for assessment. The page Using Workshop gives more details on how the grading works.
*For the grade for assessment, you can decide how strict you want the comparison to be. If you are not sure, leave it as the default 'fair'.
*You can recalcuate the grades several times.
*You as teacher can change grades here if you need to.
Publish submissions: You can show to other students selected submissions if you wish. Click on a submission in the workshop grades report (image above) and scroll down to 'Feedback for the author'. Tick the box to publish this submission. Other students will see it once the workshop is closed.

Closing the workshop
When you are satisfied with the final grading, click the icon or text to close the workshop. The Closed phase will be highlighted and students will be able to see their grades, any published submissions and a conclusion if you added one.

See a workshop in action
If you would like to practise with a workshop with students and data, log in to the Mount Orange School demonstration site and access the course Celebrating Cultures with the username teacher and password moodle. You can switch phases, check grading, publish submissions and explore other features of this useful activity.

Students submit their own work and then receive a number of submissions from other students which they must assess according to the teacher's specifications. (They may also assess their own work if the teacher requests this.) Text may be typed directly into Moodle's editor, or files of any type may be uploaded, as long as others have the software to view them. See Using Workshop for details of the phases involved. The teacher can decide whether to show or hide the identities of the students to each other when assessing is taking place.

Two grades are given and appear in the Gradebook: a grade for the student's own submission and a grade for the quality of their peer assessment skills. See Workshop grading strategies for more information.

Workshop is primarily a student-focused activity; however, the teacher may guide the students by providing example submissions for them to try out before assessing their peers and at the end of the workshop the teacher may publish some good (or less good) examples.

For a working example of a workshop activity, see the Celebrating Cultures course in the School Demonstration site. with the username teacher and password moodle.
# List your site on our list of registered sites in your country. (But if you want to keep it private, that’s fine too!)
# Make use of the messaging server https://messages.moodle.net/ for Moodle app notifications.

How about security?
We don’t share your information with anyone. We don’t go into your site. We use the aggregated anonymous data to publish the statistics of the worldwide community and use the other data to help us in our decision making around new features and plugins.

How do I register?
Register your site by logging in as an administrator and going to Site administration / Registration. If you’re not the admin, ask them nicely to check!

I don’t want my details public
Your registration is private to us unless you choose to make it public.

Do I have to register? What happens if I don’t?
Registration is optional, but we wouldn’t want you to miss out on any important security issues or upgrades and put your site at risk. The more people who register, the better a picture we get of how Moodle is used and which aspects we can improve. So registering is a win-win for you as well as for us.

However, if you only want to use Moodle for testing things out then you don't need to put your site online and you don't need to register it.

I can’t register my site!
Only sites which are online can be registered. If your site is online and you have problems registering, please email [mailto:support@moodle.org support@moodle.org].

If you encounter a problem updating your registration, please try unregistering then re-registering your site. To unregister your site, click the ‘Unregister’ link at the bottom of the Registration page.

Note that it can take a while before your site is listed on https://moodle.net/sites/ so please be patient.
Blocks are items which may be added to the left or right or centre column of any page in Moodle. They may also be added to the centre of the Dashboard.

Any block can be made 'sticky' so that it appears in all the contexts below, such as throughout a course or a particular activity - see Block settings.

Blocks can be placed on the side of the screen (if your theme supports it) via the Dock icons ( and ). If a responsive theme (such as 'Clean' or Boost theme) is used, blocks will be accessible from the bottom of smaller screens, below the main content.

Note it is also possible to dock blocks when using the Clean theme if desired. You can theme the position of blocks in the centre of pages as well if you are able to create custom themes.
Restoring a course backup
A course backup file (.mbz) may be restored from within any existing course for which you have permission. During the restore process, you will be given the option to restore as a new course or into an existing course.

# With the Boost theme click the gear menu and then 'Restore' Otherwise, go to Site administration > Front page settings > Restore (if you have front page permissions) or Administration > Course administration > Restore (if you have an empty course to restore into.)
# Upload the backup file or choose a file in the course backup area or user private backup area and click Restore
# Confirm - Check that everything is as required then click the Continue button
# Destination - Choose whether the course should be restored as a new course or into an existing course then click the Continue button
# Settings - Select activities, blocks, filters and possibly other items as required then click the Next button
# Schema - Select/deselect specific items and amend the course name, short name and start date if necessary then click the Next button
# Review - Check that everything is as required, using the Previous button if necessary, then click the 'Perform restore' button
# Complete - Click the continue button

Notes:

# New in 3.4: If you are restoring a course with user data (forum posts for example) then the user data will keep the original dates, whereas the activities and sections will change according to the new course start time you set.
# If your new course has fewer sections than the course you are restoring, the extra sections will appear as "orphaned activities". Increase the number of sections in the new course to make them visible.
# If you are restoring a course from a different Moodle site and you obtain the error message "Trying to restore user (admin) from backup file will cause conflict", you can enable the setting 'Allow admin conflict resolution' in Site admin > Courses > Backups > General import defaults
# In Moodle 3.3.2 onwards, when restoring a course containing calendar events from activities e.g. assignment due dates, these events will appear in the calendar a short while after restoring the course. The events are added to the calendar via a cron task. Restoring multiple courses will result in queued tasks with a possible delay before events appear in the calendar. (See MDL-58906 for further details.)

Restoring from course and category management screens
General restore defaults
An administrator can set defaults and lock selected restore settings in 'General restore defaults' in the Site administration. If a setting is locked, then it can not be changed when restoring a course.

Different defaults may be set for restoring and merging into another course and for restoring and deleting the course contents.

Tsala: removing community finder block link

Reusing activities
Course and activity backup files can contain an alias or shortcut, as described in the section 'Creating an alias/shortcut' in Working with files. The referenced file can be an external file (such as a file stored in Dropbox) or a file stored in Moodle (such as a file in another activity or course or in a user's Private files area).

During the restore process, Moodle does its best to try and restore the aliases correctly. However, there are many factors involved, most notably:

* Is the restore happening on the same site that the backup comes from?
* What repository type was used to create the alias in the original course? In other words, what is the location of the referenced file?
* Is the referenced file an external file?
* Does the backup file contain the referenced file and if so, is that file selected to be restored, too?

In some situations it's just not possible to restore aliases and so they are skipped.

The following flowchart documents the implemented behaviour.

<br clear="all" />

Note that this logic is applied whenever the restore process is executed, in other words in all the following situations:

* Course restore

Managing a Moodle site

Registering with a custom community hub
To register with Moodle.net, please see Site registration.

In Moodle 3.4 onwards, registration with custom community hubs has been removed from Moodle core. Moodle 3.4 sites wanting to register with a custom community hub need to install the following plugins:

* tool_customhub for registration and course publishing
* block_customhub for searching courses published on custom hubs

Running a custom community hub
Running a hub server is not something you should undertake lightly.

As the hub administrator you are responsible for the content in the hub, and you need to put in place processes to:
* verify all the course content is clean (of porn or malicious javascript)
* manage registered sites and their status
* maintain the quality of the listings through editing

Minimal Requirements
Below is a list of Minimal requirements for running a custom community hub.

* MySQL - minimum version 5.0.25
* PHP 5.3.2
* Apache
* ensure that the site you will be registering does not use any upper case letters (even though those are perfectly valid). EG: moodle.org/2012-Spring will not work!
* ensure that the following php.ini variables are set to "On"
** allow_url_fopen: This setting is required the hub to be able to register a site. If this option is not enabled, you will be given the cannotregisternotavailablesite error. Related tracker issue: https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/CONTRIB-3063
* mod_security in Apache version 1 and mod_security2 in Apache version 2 will return a 403 forbidden error when a URL that is not the local domain is passed as a get variable. mod_security on either the hub or client servers will block the completion of the client/hub registration process, even to Moodle.net, as within the registration process URL's are passed as get variables a number of times. An exception can be added to mod_security in Apache version 1 via a local .htacess file. However, this ability was removed in mod_security2. In mod_security2 the exception must be added to mod_security.conf of /conf.d. Related forum discussion: http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=188933

How the hub software works
The hub software is implemented as a separate "local" plugin designed to be added to a standard install of Moodle 2.x. In this way the hub gets to use on all the features in the Moodle core API and benefits from maintenance of the core code. This plugin is no longer supported by Moodle HQ and is not compatible with Moodle 3.4 or later.

Once installed the whole site gets a new frontpage with a simple search box.

Please don't add the hub capabilities to an existing Moodle site with real courses. Although it may work, there are some opportunities for GUI confusion and some unknowns when it comes to security, so please just avoid it. Moodle is free, so it's trivial to install another clean copy to build your hub with.

How to set up a custom community hub server
# Install Moodle 3.3 or earlier somewhere on a web server with a nice URL.
# Download the latest hub plugin from https://github.com/moodlehq/moodle-local_hub (this plugin is no longer supported, you may need to modify it locally yourself)
# Save the zip into the /local directory of Moodle and unzip, producing /local/hub
# Visit the "Notifications" page in Moodle (/admin) to complete the upgrade and install the hub software.
# Uncheck password policy (search 'passwordpolicy' in admin search)
# Allow extended characters in usernames (search 'extendedusernamechars' in admin search)
# Enable web services for the hub (Administration > Site Administration > Advanced features)
# Enable the XML-RPC protocol (Administration > Site Administration > Plugins > Web services > Manage protocols)
# Set up the SMTP (Administration > Site Administration > Plugins > Message outputs > Email)
# Set up the recaptcha (Administration > Site Administration > Plugins > Authentication > Manage authentication)
# Set up your hub (Administration > Site Administration > Hub > Settings) Supply a description, enable the hub, supply a hub password.
# You will also need to set up mailing list using software that can be downloaded from https://sendy.co/

Congratulations! You now have a working hub with no content!

Managing sites
In Site administration > Hub > Manage sites, you can:
* Prioritise a site, so that it is listed higher than unprioritised sites on the hub. By default, sites are listed in alphabetical order. A prioritised site is always trusted.
* Trust a site: when a site is trusted, any published course is immediately available
* Delete a site: delete a site from the database. A message will be sent to the site administrator.
* Settings: you can change some information as the name, the description, the language...
* Make a site visible: only sites declared as visible appear on the the site list (currently the site list hasn't been implemented)

Managing courses
In Site administration > Hub > Manage courses, you can:
* Delete a course: delete a course from the database.
* Settings: you can change some information as the name, the description, the language...
* Make a course visible: decide if the course is displayed on search result

Important things about roles, users and web services
A hub server uses Web services a lot. For this reason it is important to understand the web services administration, and what happens if you change some roles/users/services.

Roles
The hub server creates on the fly some roles that you should never delete/modify:
* one role for the hub directory
* one role for registered sites
* one role for public sites

Users
The hub server creates on the fly some users that you should never delete/modify:
* one user for the hub directory
* one user for public access
* as many users as registered sites

Services
The hub creates during installation some web services that you should never delete/modify:
* one service for Hub directory
* one service for Registered sites
* one service for Public sites

It also creates tokens on the fly. These tokens are not displayed on the token management list, so you cannot accidentally delete them.

Community hubs FAQ
What is a hub server?
A hub server is a Moodle plugin. It transforms a freshly installed Moodle site into a hub server. A hub server is used to store course backups that have been shared by registered Moodle sites.

Can I use a hub server as a normal Moodle site?
For security reasons it is better not to do so.

Where can I download hub server plugin?
The hub server plugin is available for download from the modules and plugins database http://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=local_hub

Is the hub server plugin code maintained by Moodle HQ?
Not any longer. It is also known that the current code is not compatible with Moodle 3.4 or later.

Can anybody register with my hub?
For sites running Moodle 3.3 or earlier the registration and course publishing is included in standard Moodle distribution. For sites running Moodle 3.4 or later, as mentioned above, additional plugins are required.

Can I share a course with a specific theme?
Yes you can. However it is better to indicate in the publication creator notes that the theme will only be activated if:
* The theme is installed
* Course themes are enabled for the site

Can I share a course using a contributed module/block?
Yes. If this module/block is Moodle 2.0 compatible (with support for backup and restore in 2.0), the module and its data will be added to the shared course backup.

Can I share a course using a contributed local plugin?
The local plugin would need to be already installed on the destination Moodle site. Then this local plugin would need to be set up. Use publication creator notes to explain it.
Note that sharing does not save information related to a local plugin (i.e. the local plugin database is not backed up).

Can I share Moodle 1.9 courses?
It is not possible to share courses directly from a Moodle 1.9 site. However it is possible as follows:
# Backup your course
# Restore your course into a Moodle 2.2 site or later.
# Share your course

I get an error when attempting to publish a course
The most likely cause of the error "An error occurred during the course publication (Access control exception | DEBUG INFO: Invalid token - token not found). Please try again later." is that the token is shared by multiple sites.

The solution is to unregister your Moodle site in Administration > Site administration > Server > Hubs then re-register it.

Tsala: /* Course backup capabilities */ removing Backup for hub cap

Backup
A course can be saved with some or all of its parts by using the course backup. Typically, the site administrator will set a schedule of automated course backups for the whole site. A teacher can create a backup or download an existing backup for safe keeping, or for use on another Moodle site.

Backing up a course
To backup a course

# Go into the course.
# Click the Backup link either in the gear menu or the Administration block (depending upon the theme).
# Initial settings - Select activities, blocks, filters and other items as required then click the Next button. Users with appropriate permissions, such as administrators and managers, can choose whether to include users, anonymize user information, or include user role assignments, groups, groupings, user files, comments, user completion details, course logs and grade history in the backup.
# Schema settings - Select/deselect specific items to include in backup, then click the Next button.
# If desired, select specific types of activity to be backed up by clicking the link 'Show type options'
# Confirmation and review - Check that everything is as required, using the Previous button if necessary, otherwise click the 'Perform backup' button
# Complete - Click the Continue button

A backup file (with distinctive .mbz extension to avoid confusion with .zip files) is then saved in the course backup area. Backup file names are of the form backup-moodle2-course-coursename-date-hour.mbz, ending in -nu.mbz when backed up with no users and -an.mbz with anonymized names.

Tip: If you are satisfied with the default settings and don't wish to go through all the backup screens, you can simply click 'Jump to final step' to perform the backup.

Anonymizing user information
Anonymize user information is a backup feature which "protects user identities" by making each user anonymous. If this box is checked in the backup initial settings, Moodle will substitute aliases for real names, substituting @doesntexist.com email addresses and so forth. For example "Max Manager" might become "anonfirstname4 anonlastname4".

Backup via CLI for administrators
Site administrators can backup selected courses using a CLI script.

Options
* --courseid=INTEGER (Course ID for backup.)
* --courseshortname=STRING (Course shortname for backup.)
* --destination=STRING (Path where to store backup file. If not set the backup will be stored within the course backup file area.)
* -h, --help (Print out this help.)

Example
\$sudo -u www-data /usr/bin/php admin/cli/backup.php --courseid=2 --destination=/moodle/backup/

Tips and tricks
* Lose content after a restore in Moodle 2.0 ? Do you see topic headings that say "Orphaned activities"? Solution: Go to course settings and increase the number of topic sections and things will return to normal.

Creative uses
The backup and restore processes can offer the teacher and administrators many creative solutions.
*Duplicating courses or specific activities in one course to another course (similar to Import)
*Updating a production Moodle site course, with material from a localhost site course
*Transferring a course to a new Moodle site.
*In earlier versions of Moodle, a way of rolling a course forward without past student activity
*Creating a blank activity, save just that activity and then restore it to the course or another course one or more times.

General backup defaults
Default settings for course backups can be set by a site administrator in 'General backup defaults' in the Site administration.

Selected settings may be locked, so that they cannot be changed when creating a course backup.

By selecting a time in the "Keep logs for.." dropdown, it is possible to specify how long backup logs information is kept before being deleted. As this information may be very large, it is recommended the length of time chosen be quite short.

Course backup stops above 90%, not showing any errors
This has been reported to be caused by:
* a non-standard course_format. Try replacing the course format.
* not enough server RAM. Adding more RAM to your server is usually the first performance recomendation.

Badges FAQ

Tsala: /* My site uses the Mozilla Open Badges backpack. How do I change to Badgr? */ rewording

Badges
How can teachers award site badges?
By default, teachers can only award course badges. Only users with capabilities to manage badges in the system are able to do this, so if you wish teachers to award site badges you need to create a new role as follows:

# Go to Administration > Site administration > Users > Permissions > Define roles and click 'Add a new role'
# Leave 'Use role or archetype' as No role' and click the continue button
# Give the role a name e.g. "Site badge awarder"
# Tick the System box to allow the role to be assigned in the System context
# Set the following capabilities to "allow": moodle/badges:awardbadge, moodle/badges:viewbadges, moodle/badges:configurecriteria
# Click the button 'Create this role".
# Assign the "Site badge awarder" role as a system role to the teachers you wish to award site badges.

Teachers with the role of "Site badge awarder" will see a link in the Administration block Site administration > Badges > Manage badges.

Can more than one teacher in a course award the same badge?
(copied from MDL-39189) It's not the user who issues the badge, but a role. Users with multiple roles will have an option to use both of them to issue badges. If the badge is awarded twice by different roles, both roles are displayed and criteria (ALL/ANY) is given. In some cases it will be required for a badge to be awarded by several different roles. When there are, let's say, three teachers in the course and they go to award a badge as a teacher, each of them will see the list of users who already got the badge from a teacher, so they won't need to award the badge again.
What's the difference between a backpack and a collection?
When you upload a badge to the Openbadges site you are adding it to your backpack, which is the general area you put your badges in (like a backpack!. You then organise them into collections (like separate little bags in your backpack) and you choose which to display on your Moodle profile. So a badge may be in your backpack and not in a collection, but it must be in your backpack before it can be in a collection (note the 'public' box must be ticked too). Collections allow you to control which badges you share with people.

What size is a badge?
A badge is displayed with dimensions 100 X 100 pixels. However, a larger image may be uploaded, which will then be cropped to be a square, and then resized.

See also Badge image size discussion.

Can I award a badge based on a specific grade?
There are two ways of awarding a badge based on a specific grade.

Method 1:

Set a passing grade for the quiz in the gradebook, as explained in section 1.3 of Activity completion settings.

Method 2:

# Create a page resource and set the restrict access conditions so that it only appears if the user obtains a certain activity grade or course total
# Set the activity completion for the page as "view"
# Set the badge criteria such that the page has to be completed (i.e. viewed)

My site uses the Mozilla Open Badges backpack. How do I change to Badgr?
Users need to create an account on https://badgr.io then they will be able to add badges from Moodle to their Badgr backpack.

Any public badge collections from users' old Open Badges backpacks will no longer be displayed in their Moodle profile. To enable users to display public badge collections from their new Badgr backpack, the site needs to be upgraded to Moodle 3.7.

I previously added badges to my Mozilla Open Badges backpack. What do I do now?
# Create an account on https://badgr.io.
# You will receive an email from Mozilla with a zipped file of your badges, which you can upload to your Badgr backpack.

Do I have to use my Moodle email for my backpack?
No, you can specify the email address associated with your backpack.

Which roles can see which badges?
See this forum post on viewing badges

Can I change a badge image once awarded?
The short answer is 'no', but see this forum post on changing badge images for more information.

Can I revoke a badge once it has been awarded?
Yes - see the section on revoking a badge in Using badges.

How can I get badges with participants' profiles like on Moodle.org?
These are not badges. These are group avatars/pictures. When you create a group in your course - see the documentation on Groups - you can add a picture to represent that group. In places such as forums this picture is then displayed for each participant. If they are a member of several groups then several pictures will be displayed.

In Moodle 3.6, users need to create an account on https://badgr.io then they will be able to add badges from Moodle to their Badgr backpack.

In Moodle 3.6, users need to create an account on https://badgr.io then they will be able to add badges from Moodle to their Badgr backpack. However, any public badge collections in users' old Open Badges backpack, nor their new Badgr backpack, can be displayed in their Moodle profile. To enable this, you need to upgrade to Moodle 3.7.

# Assign the "Site badge awarder" role as a system role to the teachers you wish to award site badges.
Users will be able to send their badges to Badgr.io automatically (no change is needed). However, any badges in a user's Open Badges backpack will no longer be displayed in their profile.

Enable course badges
Ticking this box will allow teachers to add and manage badges in their courses.

Badges capabilities
