Workshop is a powerful peer (and self) assessment activity. This quick guide takes you through the basics of setting up a workshop for your students. If you really want to make the most of everything a Workshop can do, make sure you study the full '''[[Workshop activity]]''' documentation.

==Setting up your workshop==
*In the course where you want your workshop, turn on the editing and from the Activity Chooser, select 'Workshop'.
*Give it a name and a description telling students what the workshop is about.
*Clicking the question mark icon [[File:helppopup.png]] next to any setting you don't understand will display extra help.
*If you're not sure about the '''Grading settings''', leave them as default. Students get two grades - one for the work they submit and one for the quality of their peer assessments. You can change the default 80% and 20% if you wish and you can also set passing grades for both scores. It is usually only the students who do the assessing, although you as a teacher can assess too, and you can change individual student grades later on if you think it is necessary. The page '''[[Workshop grading strategies]]''' gives more information.
* The '''Submission settings''' is where you tell them what they must do for this task. They can type directly into Moodle or upload one or more files. You can let them submit late if you wish and you can specify which file types they are allowed to upload.

==Workshop phases==
Once saved, you will see the Workshop displayed like this:

A workshop moves between different phases. You can automate some phases and (if needed) you can move back a phase. You as teacher switch phases when you are ready by clicking the icon or text. The Setup phase will be highlighted because it's the phase you are in when you have just created the workshop.

===Setup phase===
*Click 'Edit assessment form' to provide detailed grading criteria for your students to use. When finished, click 'Save and close', and all ticks on the Setup phase will be the same colour.
*You are ready to switch to the Submission phase which lets students send in their work. Click the icon or text at the top of Submission phase. This phase will be highlighted.

===Submission phase===
*Students will now be able to submit their work during this time, until any deadline you specified - unless you also allowed late submissions.
*Click the link 'Allocate submissions' to decide if you yourself want to choose which student assesses whose work (''Manual allocation''), or if you want Moodle to choose for you (''Random allocation'') And do you want students to assess others' work even if they have not submitted anything themselves?

Workshop is a powerful peer assessment activity. The documentation on [[Workshop settings]] explains the different options available.

Students submit their own work and then receive a number of submissions from other students which they must assess according to the teacher's specifications. (They may also assess their own work if the teacher requests this.) Text may be typed directly into Moodle's editor, or files of any type may be uploaded, as long as others have the software to view them. See '''[[Using Workshop]]''' for details of the phases involved. The teacher can decide whether to show or hide the identities of the students to each other when assessing is taking place.

Two grades are given and appear in the Gradebook: a grade for the student's own submission and a grade for the quality of their peer assessment skills. See [[Workshop grading strategies]] for more information.

Workshop is primarily a student-focused activity; however, the teacher may guide the students by providing example submissions for them to try out before assessing their peers and at the end of the workshop the teacher may publish some good (or less good) examples.

Your registration is private to us unless you choose to make it public.

==Do I have to register? What happens if I don’t?==
Registration is optional, but we wouldn’t want you to miss out on any important security issues or upgrades and put your site at risk. The more people who register, the better a picture we get of how Moodle is used and which aspects we can improve. So registering is a win-win for you as well as for us.

However, if you only want to use Moodle for testing things out then you don't need to put your site online and you don't need to register it.

==I can’t register my site!==
Only sites which are online can be registered. If your site is online and you have problems registering, please email [mailto:support@moodle.org support@moodle.org].

If you encounter a problem updating your registration, please try unregistering then re-registering your site. To unregister your site, click the ‘Unregister’ link at the bottom of the Registration page.

Note that it can take a while before your site is listed on https://moodle.net/sites/ so please be patient.

Blocks are items which may be added to the left or right or centre column of any page in Moodle. They may also be added to the centre of the Dashboard.

Any block can be made 'sticky' so that it appears in all the contexts below, such as throughout a course or a particular activity - see [[Block settings]].

Blocks can be placed on the side of the screen (if your theme supports it) via the [[Dock]] icons ( [[Image:Dock_to_block.png]] and [[Image:Block_to_dock.png]] ). If a responsive theme (such as '[[Standard_themes#Standard_themes|Clean]]' or [[Boost theme]]) is used, blocks will be accessible from the bottom of smaller screens, below the main content.

Note it is also possible to dock blocks when using the Clean theme if desired. You can theme the position of blocks in the centre of pages as well if you are able to create custom themes.

==Restoring a course backup==

A course backup file (.mbz) may be restored from within any existing course for which you have permission. During the restore process, you will be given the option to restore as a new course or into an existing course.

An administrator can set defaults and lock selected restore settings in 'General restore defaults' in the Site administration. If a setting is locked, then it can not be changed when restoring a course.

There are several ways to reuse a course or parts of a course. Most of them involve or are similar to a backup and restore process.

Course and activity backup files can contain an alias or shortcut, as described in the section 'Creating an alias/shortcut' in [[Working with files]]. The referenced file can be an external file (such as a file stored in [[Dropbox]]) or a file stored in Moodle (such as a file in another activity or course or in a user's [[Private files]] area).

During the restore process, Moodle does its best to try and restore the aliases correctly. However, there are many factors involved, most notably:

* Is the restore happening on the same site that the backup comes from?
* What repository type was used to create the alias in the original course? In other words, what is the location of the referenced file?
* Is the referenced file an external file?
* Does the backup file contain the referenced file and if so, is that file selected to be restored, too?

In some situations it's just not possible to restore aliases and so they are skipped.

The following flowchart documents the implemented behaviour.

* mod_security in Apache version 1 and mod_security2 in Apache version 2 will return a 403 forbidden error when a URL that is not the local domain is passed as a get variable. mod_security on either the hub or client servers will block the completion of the client/hub registration process, even to Moodle.net, as within the registration process URL's are passed as get variables a number of times. An exception can be added to mod_security in Apache version 1 via a local .htacess file. However, this ability was removed in mod_security2. ===How the hub software works===

The hub software is implemented as a separate "local" plugin designed to be added to a standard install of Moodle 2.x. In this way the hub gets to use on all the features in the Moodle core API and benefits from maintenance of the core code. This plugin is no longer supported by Moodle HQ and is not compatible with Moodle 3.4 or later.

Once installed the whole site gets a new frontpage with a simple search box.

Please don't add the hub capabilities to an existing Moodle site with real courses. Although it may work, there are some opportunities for GUI confusion and some unknowns when it comes to security, so please just avoid it. Moodle is free, so it's trivial to install another clean copy to build your hub with.

===How to set up a custom community hub server===

# Install Moodle 3.3 or earlier somewhere on a web server with a nice URL.

A course can be saved with some or all of its parts by using the course backup. Typically, the site administrator will set a schedule of [[Automated course backup|automated course backups]] for the whole site. A backup file (with distinctive .mbz extension to avoid confusion with .zip files) is then saved in the course backup area. Backup file names are of the form ''backup-moodle2-course-coursename-date-hour.mbz'', ending in ''-nu.mbz'' when backed up with no users and ''-an.mbz'' with anonymized names.

Tip: If you are satisfied with the default settings and don't wish to go through all the backup screens, you can simply click 'Jump to final step' to perform the backup.

==Anonymizing user information==

Anonymize user information is a backup feature which "protects user identities" by making each user anonymous. If this box is checked in the backup initial settings, Moodle will substitute aliases for real names, substituting @doesntexist.com email addresses and so forth. For example "Max Manager" might become "anonfirstname4 anonlastname4".

==Backup via CLI for administrators==

Site administrators can backup selected courses using a CLI script.

* Lose content after a restore in Moodle 2.0 ? Do you see topic headings that say "Orphaned activities"? Solution: Go to course settings and increase the number of topic sections and things will return to normal.

==Creative uses==
The backup and restore processes can offer the teacher and administrators many creative solutions.
*Duplicating courses or specific activities in one course to another course (similar to Import)
*Updating a production Moodle site course, with material from a localhost site course
*Transferring a course to a new Moodle site.
*In earlier versions of Moodle, a way of rolling a course forward without past student activity
*Creating a blank activity, save just that activity and then restore it to the course or another course one or more times.

==General backup defaults==

Default settings for course backups can be set by a site administrator in 'General backup defaults' in the Site administration.

Selected settings may be locked, so that they cannot be changed when creating a course backup.

By selecting a time in the "Keep logs for.." dropdown, it is possible to specify how long backup logs information is kept before being deleted. As this information may be very large, it is recommended the length of time chosen be quite short.

==Course backup stops above 90%, not showing any errors==
This has been reported to be caused by:
* a [[Course_formats#Contributed_Course_Formats|non-standard course_format]]. Try replacing the course format.
* not enough server RAM. Adding more RAM to your server is usually the first [[Performance_recommendations|performance recomendation]].

Your registration is private to us unless you choose to make it public.

==Do I have to register? What happens if I don’t?==
Registration is optional, but we wouldn’t want you to miss out on any important security issues or upgrades and put your site at risk. The more people who register, the better a picture we get of how Moodle is used and which aspects we can improve. So registering is a win-win for you as well as for us.

However, if you only want to use Moodle for testing things out then you don't need to put your site online and you don't need to register it.

==I can’t register my site!==
Only sites which are online can be registered. If your site is online and you have problems registering, please email [mailto:support@moodle.org support@moodle.org].

If you encounter a problem updating your registration, please try unregistering then re-registering your site. To unregister your site, click the ‘Unregister’ link at the bottom of the Registration page.

Note that it can take a while before your site is listed on https://moodle.net/sites/ so please be patient.

==How can teachers award site badges?==

By default, teachers can only award course badges. Only users with capabilities to manage badges in the system are able to do this, so if you wish teachers to award site badges you need to create a new role as follows:

# Go to ''Administration > Site administration > Users > Permissions > Define roles'' and click 'Add a new role'
# Leave 'Use role or archetype' as No role' and click the continue button
# Give the role a name e.g. "Site badge awarder"
# Tick the '''System''' box to allow the role to be assigned in the System context
# Set the following capabilities to "allow": moodle/badges:awardbadge, moodle/badges:viewbadges, moodle/badges:configurecriteria
# Click the button 'Create this role".
# Assign the "Site badge awarder" role as a system role to the teachers you wish to award site badges.

Teachers with the role of "Site badge awarder" will see a link in the Administration block ''Site administration > Badges > Manage badges''.

==Can more than one teacher in a course award the same badge?==
''(copied from MDL-39189'') It's not the user who issues the badge, but a role. Users with multiple roles will have an option to use both of them to issue badges. If the badge is awarded twice by different roles, both roles are displayed and criteria (ALL/ANY) is given. In some cases it will be required for a badge to be awarded by several different roles. When there are, let's say, three teachers in the course and they go to award a badge as a teacher, each of them will see the list of users who already got the badge from a teacher, so they won't need to award the badge again.
==What's the difference between a backpack and a collection?==
When you upload a badge to the [http://backpack.openbadges.org/ Openbadges site] you are adding it to your backpack, which is the general area you put your badges in (like a backpack!. You then organise them into collections (like separate little bags in your backpack) and you choose which to display on your Moodle profile. So a badge may be in your backpack and not in a collection, but it must be in your backpack before it can be in a collection (note the 'public' box must be ticked too). Collections allow you to control which badges you share with people.

==What size is a badge?==

A badge is displayed with dimensions 100 X 100 pixels. However, a larger image may be uploaded, which will then be cropped to be a square, and then resized.

==Can I award a badge based on a specific grade?==

There are two ways of awarding a badge based on a specific grade.

Method 1:

Set a passing grade for the quiz in the gradebook, as explained in section 1.3 of [[Activity completion settings]].

Method 2:

# Create a page resource and set the restrict access conditions so that it only appears if the user obtains a certain activity grade or course total
# Set the activity completion for the page as "view"
# Set the badge criteria such that the page has to be completed (i.e. viewed)

Users will be able to send their badges to Badgr.io automatically (no change is needed on your site). These are not badges. These are group avatars/pictures. When you create a group in your course - see the documentation on [[Groups]] - you can add a picture to represent that group. In places such as forums this picture is then displayed for each participant. If they are a member of several groups then several pictures will be displayed.
