by [https://moodle.org/user/profile.php?id=1341597 Richard Havinga]

The Moodle '''GSB (Gold, Silver & Bronze) set''' allows automatic medal awards for Moodle courses based upon a defined benchmark criteria of activities and resources. The set consists of a report which allows the criteria to be benchmarked and a block to publicise the award to the teacher(s). Administrators can also over ride these medals if there is the need too.

The award can be set as Gold, Silver, Bronze, In Development & Excluded.

== Global Criteria Types ==

In the report settings (Site Administration > Plugins > Reports > GSB Medals) global criteria and medal criteria settings can be populated.

You can set the following global criteria types here:

* Include Sub Categories
* The minimum average student views before being able to have a calculated medal score. All courses without this criteria will be marked as in development
* The minimum number of enrollments needed on a course before being able to have a calculated medal score. All courses without this criteria will be marked as in development
* EXPERIMENTAL - Automatically award medals when a teacher or administrator enters a course

== Medal Criteria Types ==

In the report settings (Site Administration > Plugins > Reports > GSB Medals) global criteria and medal criteria settings can be populated.

All three medals (Gold, Silver & Bronze) can be awarded based upon counts of the below activities or resources, on an optional count or mandatory basis:

* Number of Resources (Files)
* Number of Assignments (Moodle 2 compliant)
* Number of Feedback Activities
* Number of IMS Packages
* Number of Quiz Activities
* Number of Embedded Media
* Number of Chat Activities
* Number of Forums
* Number of Wikis
* Number of Books
* Number of Database Activities
* Number of Workshops
* Number of Choice Activities
* Number of Glossaries

New Features:

* Number of Labels
* Number of Section Headings (Choose whether every section needs user created headings)
* Number of Turnitin Assignments (Counted with Moodle Assignments)
* Number of URLs
* Number of Folders
* Number of Files to include Files in Folders (Included in Files Count

Use the optional Requirements setting under each Medal Configuration heading to select the number of optional requirements required to meet the Calculation.

== Block Setting ==

When a medal is calculated there is a link to help documentation provided by default however, you will most likely want to change this to your own documentation link. To change this navigate to:

Site Administration > Plugin > Blocks > GSB and paste in your preferred link.

== Calculating Medals ==

When you want to calculate the medals you can do so by navigating to Site Administration > Reports > GSB medals. From here you can then select your course category and see the current given score, the auto calculated score and whether the course medal has been over ridden. You can over ride a course so that it is Gold, Silver, Bronze, in Development or Excluded from the medals entirely. Currently unless you choose to use the experimental option, you will need to process the medals for each category when you see fit. It has been left this way because of the possibility to need manual intervention and I always like to look at a course before I given it a Gold medal but this may change in the future depending upon feedback.

A SMART Targets Report can be a useful way for the learner to set themselves targets agreed targets.

'''SMART Targets are targets which are:'''

'''Specific:''' State what is to be achieved for example, increase assignment grades

'''Measurable:''' a number that can be measured e.g. increase assignment grade to Merit from Pass

'''Agreed:''' It is an agreed target between the people involved e.g. the Teacher and the Student

'''Realistic:''' The target is achievable e.g. the student can improve their grades to the given target

'''Timed:''' There is a time where this target is aimed to be achieved e.g. by 3 months time

==My Expectations==

A Learner Expectations Report can be useful so that you can understand what the learner is expecting from a course before they start. This can directly help you identify whether the course is appropriate for the student and potentially offer better alternative routes.

==Course Feedback==

Course Evaluations are a great way for the learner to provide feedback on a particular course directly to the tutor for future improvements.

==What Next==

A What Next Report, is a great way of finding out what the learner wants to do after they complete their course. Through this process you could identify whether a learner is looking to progress onto another course and then advise appropriately or if they are looking for a career, introduce them to the institutions career service.
