This should be called Muddle not Moodle. It's all clear as mud. Trying to find out how to get going is like putting your hand into a hat and pulling out a random snippit of information, which gives you no real clue about how the thing is supposed to work as a whole. All I see here is a standard wiki page. I think the idea has potential but you don't make it easy to get started. For example, a "Getting started" tutorial would help.

 • I (Chris Collman) can't say the above is a new perspective. First thing is to go public and ask a question some place for help. In a standard wikipage, there is usually a search function and Moodle has it. However MoodleDocs can answer questions. "Keep Private" asked a bunch of questions and *did a nice job in listing them. I answered each one with a link. Then I went back and decided that these were really Frequently Asked Questions, so I made a catagory in this sandbox page. I like to put my bah humbug comments on the Page Comment tab, but that is me, we all have different ways of learning. --Chris collman 2 04:41, 30 July 2006 (WST)

FAQs

 • What do you need to set up the system?

I tried a search on "setup", looked a little and saw Installation. Clicked on that and saw https://docs.moodle.org/en/Installing_Moodle#Requirements

 • Where can you obtain the needed parts?

Humm Moodle.org on left "Download Moodle" will take you to http://download.moodle.org/

 • How do you set up the lessons?

Try doing a search on Lesson, you get to https://docs.moodle.org/en/Lesson at the top right are some other links. At the bottom of the page under See Also are some excellent links. One will take you to a moodle site that is very hands on http://moodle.tokem.fi/. Then there are the catagory indexes for Moodle 1.6, and Teacher, and Lesson and Modules.

 • How do you set up each type of quiz page, etc.?

A search on "quiz", menu on right will lead to you to https://docs.moodle.org/en/Adding/editing_a_quiz or outside Moodle to here

 • How do you set up the grading system?

Try doing a search on Grades instead of grading system or look at the Catagory index for Teacher at the bottom of say the Lesson page.

 • How do you review grades, class rankings, see which lesson pages give the most trouble to students, etc.?

Try a search on a different term, say Lesson Report which will take you https://docs.moodle.org/en/Lesson_reports or look at the https://docs.moodle.org/en/Category:Teacher --Chris collman 2 04:41, 30 July 2006 (WST)

 • Are there other places outside of Moodle.org ?

There is also some non-moodle.org sites that have less information but more direct of how to. I like the attitude of http://moodle.tokem.fi myself. It gets right down to the brass tacks. But in fairness to MoodleDocs, the tokem.fi site is for a very specific set of users. That site will not help you if you are say an online trainer who wants to set up pay pal.--Chris collman 2 04:41, 30 July 2006 (WST)

 • I look up Teacher for clues and it refers to an Administrator. If you are an individual attempting to set up a course, then you are the Administrator, Developer, and Teacher all at the same time. What's needed is a step by step example, which can be used as a model to get started with.

Chris thinks the above is a really good point when a new user types in a very logical search command. The new user is probably not going to read about MoodleDocs to understand links and other useful stuff. They are just going to jump and swim. For example the Teacher page does not come out and say "For an index on subjects that are of interest to teachers, click here". So mention, that will be my next stop. --Chris collman 2 04:41, 30 July 2006 (WST)

 • The below image was too big! Do I have to upload a new resized image?

I asked myself this question and went to Wikimedia formatting Help where some link clicking lead to Wikimedia image syntax and found how to take an existing image and scale it down to something more reasonable in a WikiMedia or MoodleDoc page. Thank you "Keep Private", learned something new myself. I hope this helps all the visitors to this page. Just remember that in Moodle, we don't use this full blown version of a Wiki and that can be confusing to bald persons like myself :) --Chris collman 2 04:41, 30 July 2006 (WST)

Nice. But where can I create a new page?

Type the title for your new page in the Search box to your left and hit Go. If the page doesn't exist you'll be give the option to create it by clicking on the 'this exact title' link.

Nobody has tried to edit this sandbox since

 • This is a great sandbox for what is called MoodleDocs, the collaborative documation Wiki for Moodle.org website. There is a similar Wiki that is part of Moodle.
 • If you are looking for a Moodle Sanbox, I would recommend that you (collective group of individuals) go to download.moodle click here and put the latest stable version of Moodle on your desktop, laptop or what have you. I did this back in Jan 06, I loaded the complete package (not the standard) onto a Win XP Pro desktop (this has PHP, Apache and MySQL). Went so well, I did another one at home.

Another tip: At the home page of http://moodle.org/, look for Free Support, then the first item is WELCOME! Are you new? Confused? Please start here! Good advice.

I am trying the sandbox out. I am trying to learn about Moodle so I can be the administrator for our district.--Tammy Maginity 23:16, 8 February 2006 (WST) Create your own course

I hope to learn enough about moodle to set it up for our district.

¿Le gustaría ver Moodle Docs en otro idioma? is this all you have to do this text is now bold?

So, this is cool, but it isn't getting me discernibly closer to my goal of seeing if this is really something the average faculty member can and will use to create high quality college courses. I do understand that social constructionism looks at education from the viewpoint of the learner but, without wanting to sound ungracious, I am not finding it easy to get up to speed with Moodle.

I think there needs to be something like a Moodle for Idiots right up front. Maybe I'll provide this once I learn enough to have something to teach!

I agree. This is not easy. I've spent all night going around this site and I still don't have a clue how to use it. Insert non-formatted text here

Capitalizing links

Links like sandbox might be automatically capitalized? At least on Wikipedia they are. Samuli Karevaara 14:56, 24 May 2006 (WST) Okay, here they are not. A setting somewhere? So far links have to be entered like philosophy, ok...

Hi Samuli, you're right about a wiki setting to not automatically capitalize page titles e.g. for link pages. --Helen Foster 16:18, 24 May 2006 (WST)

Are we talking about capitalising the displayed text, or automatically linking word to the page called Word (i.e. lowercase link text, capitalised page title? The latter would be nice if it's possible. I assume that many of Wikipedia's articles are about people or places that are proper nouns and are therefore always capitalised. --David Scotson 18:13, 24 May 2006 (WST)

Actually it was decided not to force capitalized links (see LocalSettings.php Force Capital Links). It would be too much work to change it now ;-) --Helen Foster 06:14, 30 May 2006 (WST)

Linking to a category

I am having lots of fun, but would like to link directly to a category like this teacher.

To do this you need to have teacher which is different to . The second will put the current page in the teacher category. Lindsay Magnus 18:41, 17 July 2006 (WST)
