The OU is the United Kingdom's only university dedicated to distance learning. They have around 150,000 undergraduate and more than 30,000 postgraduate students.

They are currently looking at building their first, large scale Virtual Learning Environment and are considering Moodle as a core element. The project team at the Open University has recognised the scalability work on Moodle undertaken by the NZOSVLE project team. In the spirit of open source we're sharing information on how we've approached scalability issues.
