Description

The custom certificate module allows the dynamic generation of certificates with complete customisation via the web browser. It is different from the certificate module developed by the same author and both plugins can coexist peacefully in the same Moodle server.

Edit settings

  • Name - you can add a sensible name here.
  • Description - here you can put all the details about this particular certificate (date, course, requisites, appearance, etc). This will not be printed in the PDF.
  • Required minutes in course - number of minutes the user must habe been logged in the course in order to be elligible for this certificate.
  • Set protection - youu can prevent the user from printing, modifying or copying this certificate.
  • Common module settings - as usual.

Edit custom certificate

  • Name - This is the name of the particular certicate you are currently making. It will not appear in the PDF.
  • Width - This is the width of the certificate PDF in mm. For reference an A4 piece of paper is 210 mm wide and a letter is 216 mm wide.
  • Height - This is the height of the certificate PDF in mm. For reference an A4 piece of paper is 297mm high and a letter is 279mm high.
  • Left margin - This is the left margin of the certificate PDF in mm.
  • Right margin - This is the right margin of the certificate PDF in mm.
  • Dropdown menu to 'Add element' - These are the list of elements that will be displayed on this PDF page.
    • Element name - for your information, this will not be on the PDF. Use a very descriptive name.
    • Width - a 0 value means no constraints . Try 0 first
    • Reference point location - You can choose 'center', 'top left' or 'top right'
    • Border - this is very important if the certificate might be framed
    • Category name
    • Code
    • Course name
    • Date - you can choose either 'issued date' or 'completion date'
    • Grade
    • Garde item name
    • Image
    • Student name
    • Teacher name
    • Text
    • User field
  • Elements - These are the list of elements that will be displayed on this PDF page
  • Rearrange elements link - this is VERY IMPORTANT, as you need to check the previsualization and maybe change some values and re-check and re-change...
  • 'Add another certificate page' button
  • 'Save changes' button
  • 'Save changes and preview' button

Manage templates

You can create templates at the site level, which can then be loaded (and adapted) when creating Custom certificate activities in your course.

Create and modify templates via Site administration ► Plugins ► Activity modules ► Custom certificate ► Manage templates Editing templates follows the same approach as Edit custom certificate.

Once you have created a template, it can be applied to a Custom certificate activity using the "Load template" section of the Edit custom certificate page.

Tutorial: Making a nice-looking certificate

Note: This is VERY IMPORTANT, as most users will need some guidance to produce a working certificate for an academic acomplishment. Please make a nice, easy-to-follow tutorial with screen images

.

Get the images that you will need beforehand

  • Will you need a company logo or a University crest?
  • Get detailed images of the right resolution.
  • If the student will use a monochrome printer, make sure the images will print reasonably well in Black and White.

Create a demo student account to try the certificate on

Create a dummy account with reasonable first names and surnames (use the longest number of character that you are likely to find in your actual class (eg. 'Arnold Schwarzenegger', not 'Ben Smith').

Add all the needed elements

  • Logos in the right position and size
  • Name of the recipient and name (description) of the certificate
  • Date - issuing date and expiry date (if needed)
  • Issuing body
  • Reason to issue certificate
  • Digitized signature of authorized officer issuing the certificate
  • Digitized stamp of issuing organization

Re-arrange if needed

Add extra elements

  • A border may look nice, or not. See the examples below (...to be added later)...
  • Add a code that you can use to validate the certificate.

If possible, have someone else look at the demo certificate before letting all the students get their own

Maybe someone can spot a typo that you might have missed.

Problem solving

See the plugin page, the tracker page and the Moodle forum of this plugin. Maybe someone else had the same problem before and someone else posted a solution.

Did you get a nice custom certificate?
