# '''Name''' - make it clear what you expect students to upload to this part. If you're only expecting a single upload, then something like 'Your work' may be more intuitive than Part 1.
## ''Generate reports immediately, first report is final'' - Originality reports are created immediately and students may not resubmit papers. Submissions must be deleted by the instructor to enable resubmission.
# '''Start Date''' - the earliest date students can submit.
## ''Generate reports immediately, reports can be written until due date'' - The orgininality report is generated immediately. Students may resubmit as often as the student wishes up until the due date. Originality reports form the second and subsequent resubmissions will require a 24 hour delay before originality report is regenerated. Only the latest submission is available to the student and instructor. When the due date passes the originality report is regenerated and student submissions within the same assignment are included in the comparison which may result in a change to the originality report similarity index. Resubmissions are not allowed after the due date.
# '''Due Date''' - the deadline. If you have enabled late submissions any late submission will appear in red.
## ''Generate reports on due date'' - Originality reports for submissions are generated on the due date. Resubmissions are allowed up until the due date.
# '''Post Date''' - the date that marks and feedback are returned to students. If you are using anonymous marking, then names are revealed to tutors at this point. Two things to keep in mind about the Post Date: one is that it can be changed (as long as it hasn't already passed) and the other is that you don't want to reveal marks and feedback until the entire cohort has been marked. You can set a Post Date further in the future than you need, but be aware students can see this date so you need to liaise with them separately.
# '''''Store Student Papers''''' determines where the submission will be stored. Options are No Repository, Standard Repository and Institutional Repository.
# '''''Check against stored student papers''''' determines whether submissions are checked against other student papers.
# '''''Check against internet''''' determines whether submissions are checked against internet sources.
# '''''Check against journals, periodicals and publications''''' determines whether submissions are checked against journal, periodical and publication sources.
# '''''Moodle Groups''''' are not currently supported in the integration but are noted for inclusion in the development roadmap.

Once you have selected all of the required options click 'Save and Display' to be directed to the Summary screen where you will see options to configure each assignment part in more detail.
Originality Report option settings
# '''Allow Submissions after the Due Date''' - decide whether you wish to allow students to submit after the Due Date. Those submissions will be clearly marked as late.
# '''Report Generation Speed''' - decide when reports are generated and if students can have multiple attempts to submit. The options are:
## ''Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are not allowed)'' - Originality reports are created immediately and students may not resubmit papers. Submissions must be deleted by the instructor to enable resubmission.
## ''Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are allowed until the due date)'' - The Originality Report is generated immediately. Students may resubmit as often as the student wishes up until the due date. Turnitin will require students to wait 24 hours between viewing each subsequent Originality Report. This setting can be overridden later in individual Originality Reports.
# '''Exclude Quoted Material''' - allows the instructor to exclude text appearing in double quotation marks (i.e. " ") from being checked for matches when generating Originality Reports. This setting can be overridden in individual Originality Reports. Note that this setting will not allow misquotes to be identified, and note also that single quotation marks cannot be excluded.
# '''Exclude Small Matches''' - allows the instructor to choose to exclude matches that are lower than a certain number of words (determined by the instructor) from being considered when generating Originality Reports. This setting can be overridden in individual Originality Reports.

== Assignment Submission Dates ==
Grademark option settings

# '''Attach A Rubric To This Assignment''' - to use a marking grid, enable it here (see Turnitin guidance on setting it up).
After completion of the assignment settings the 'Summary' page gives you the opportunity update the assignment parts and balance the grades awarded for each part as a proportion of the overall grade. The edit the dates and grades awarded for each part click the pencil icon. The default dates for each assignment part are initially set to be one week from the date the assignment was created.
Advanced Turnitin Assignment settings:

* The '''Start Date''' determines the earliest time a student can make a submission to that assignment part.
* The '''Due Date''' determines the date by which time the student must submit their work. If allowing late submissions submissions made after this date will be marked in red to show a late submission.
* The '''Post Date''' determines when marks/grades will be released to students. If anonymous marking is switched on (UK only) this also represents the date when student names are revealed to the instructor.

== Turnitin Class Owner ==

Currently within Turnitin each class is managed by a single instructor. Moodle maps all enrolled Tutors to this one Turnitin Owner in order to facilitate multiple instructor access. An instructor on the Moodle course may change this 'owner' by clicking the pencil and changing the owner. This does not effect Moodle in any way but it does allow the Owner to log in to Turnitin and see the class natively within the Turnitin web site. Multiple instructors will be supported in Turnitin in a future release at that point this feature will be removed from the integration.
The rest of the settings are not particular to Turnitin, so we won't cover them here.

== Submit Paper on behalf of a Student ==
Once you have selected all of the required options click 'Save and Display'. The assignment's summary page displays with options to configure each assignment part in more detail.

To submit a paper as a tutor on behalf of a student first click on the tab 'Submit Paper' then follow these steps:
=Further settings for a Turnitin assignment=

# Select the student's name from the drop down list
The summary screen displays settings organised in three tabs which we will describe in turn.
# Enter a submission title
# Select the submission part from the drop down list, if only one part is available then this defaults to the single part.
# Enter the submission source:
## For a file upload, click on the Browse... button and select the file you wish to upload. Acceptable file types are doc, docx, pdf, rtf, txt and html.
## For a text submission, enter the text into the 'Text Submission' text area.
# Click on the 'Add Submission' button to submit the file

== Viewing the Turnitin Submission Inbox ==
==Submission Inbox tab==
When you are logged in as a Tutor you can access the student submission inbox by clicking the 'Submission Inbox' tab. Here you can edit some of  the settings you previously made (and access the rest via the Update button). You can also configure a Turnitin Rubric or QuickMark set (see Turnitin guidance on these), configure how many submissions display on each page, and refresh the submissions. You can notify students who have not submitted - particularly helpful if the submissions are anonymous.  Below those settings is the inbox of students' submitted work.

When you are logged in as a Tutor you can access the student submission inbox by clicking the 'Submission Inbox' tab.
* If you have set up the assignment to use groups you will see a 'groups' dropdown located at the top of the page. Selecting a group will filter out all the students in other groups (not compatible with anonymous assignments).
* Next, you will see the title, start, due and post dates for the assignment. You can edit the dates simply by clicking on the date or the edit icon next to it. The post date is when any grades & feedback will be revealed to students and anonymous assignments will become de-anonymised
* If you want to bulk download the assignments in either their original format or the Turnitin PDF format use the icons under the Export heading.
* The next icons provide quick links to the Rubric Manager and the Quickmark Manager.
* (If enabled) The next line down details any Peermark settings and provides a link to the Peermark Manager.
* The next section of the screen displays a table of all the submissions for the assignment
* You can control how many records you see on one page using the Show dropdown in the top left corner of the page. You can also use the Search function in the top left corner of the page if you need to search for one student.
* If a student's Similarity report says pending, you can click on the Refresh Submissions icon at the top of the table.
* The 'Student' column shows the name of the student (this will display anonymous if anonymous marking is enabled) The 'Similarity' column shows the percentage similarity score for the submission with a 'heat map' rectangle underneath it. If a submission is still being processed it will display 'Pending' and a grey rectangle. Note: Assignments should not usually take longer than ½ hr after submission to show the similarity report, however, at peak submission times this may take longer. If a report still says pending after several hours, please report this problem to ELE.
* The last two icons allow you to download or delete that individual submission. Note: Submission time stamps in red have been submitted after the deadline.

* The submission inbox operates in two modes depending on the number of submissions and a third mode if anonymous marking is enabled (UK only)
===Submit on behalf of a student===
* For a multi part assignment each student is listed with a summary of the submissions they have made. More information and full details of their submissions can be viewed by clicking the [+] icon to the left of their name.
You can submit on behalf of a student if necessary /  permissible by selecting the Cloud-Arrow icon in their record - though this won't work if submissions are set to be anonymous.
* By clicking the headings of the Student Submission, Submitted, Similarity or Grade columns you can change the submission order. By default submissions are listed in the order of Similarity Index from high to low.
* Refresh Submissions is used to check Turnitin for any changes and updates Moodle with the latest Turnitin submission data for that assignment.
* Enrol All Student is used to enroll all students currently enrolled on the Moodle course onto the Turnin class associated with that course. As a part of this process students will have a Turnitin account created if they do not already have one associated with their Moodle email address. If you do not want students to receive emails with log in details you must disable the 'Send Student Emails' option in the main configuration for the integration.
* Clicking the students name in the list will open that student's Moodle profile
* By clicking the submission title you will see the submission. If the submission has not yet been submitted to Turnitin then it will reference the uplaoded file on the Moodle server, if the file has been submitted to Turnitin it will be referenced from the Turnitin server.
* When the submission has been uploaded to Turnitin an originality report will be generated. The Similarity Index percentage will be displayed in the 'Similarity' column when it becomes available, until the Report is available the Similarity column will display 'Pending'.
* The '''''Grade''''' column will display the grade in one of two ways:
** If '''''Use GradeMark''''' is enabled and set to 'Yes, use GradeMark to grade submissions' then the grade for the paper will be displayed with a GradeMark apple beside it. Clicking this apple will open GradeMark for this submission.
** If '''''Use GradeMark''''' is not enabled or set to 'No, use Moodle to grade submissions' then the grade for the paper will be displayed with a pencil icon beside it. Clicking this icon will allow you to enter a numeric grade for this submission.
* The '''''Feedback''''' column allows the tutor to give feedback to the student in relation to the submission. The student's inbox also provides the opportunity for the student to reply to feedback or leave their own comments.
* The '''''Download''''' icon allows you to download a copy of the submission.
* The '''''Delete''''' icon allows you to delete this submission.

== Options Tab ==
==Turnitin Tutors tab==
This tab is usually only needed if you or colleagues expect to be accessing your assignment through Turnitin's web interface i.e. independently of Moodle. Here you can add any outstanding colleagues who need to be tutors. Difficulties bulk-downloading Turnitin inboxes are sometimes due to not being a Turnitin Tutor.

# '''''Auto Submit''''' can be set to 'Submit to Turnitin immediately on Upload' to upload the submission to Turnitin immediately or can be set to 'Review Upload before Submitting to Turnitin' which requires the student to click the 'Submit to Turnitin' to finalise the submission.
==Turnitin Students tab==
# '''''Use GradeMark''''' can set to 'Yes, use GradeMark to grade submissions' or 'No, use Moodle to grade submissions'
This tab is usually only needed if you expect students to be accessing your assignment through Turnitin's web interface i.e. independently of Moodle. Here you can add any outstanding students whose work you need to access via Moodle.
# '''''Grade Display''''' allows you to set whether the Grade will be displayed in the inbox as a percentage (default) or as a fraction of maximum marks e.g. 76/100.
# '''''Auto Refresh Grade / Scores''''' determines whether the Grades / Originality Scores are generated automatically when you enter / re-enter the inbox or if you want to disable the auto refresh function and manually refresh submissions by clicking the 'Refresh Submissions' link.
# '''''Submission List''''' lets you determine if the inbox displays only students that have made submissions or all students regardless.
# '''''Comments Remain Editable''''' lets you set the window of time within which a student may edit the comments left in the feedback screen.
# '''''Maximum Comment Length''''' allows you to limit the number of characters allowed in a feedback comment.

Creating a Turnitin Assignment

To create a Turnitin Assignment open the course home page, after logging in as a tutor click the 'Turn editing on' button. Select 'Turnitin Assignment' from the 'Add an activity...' drop down menu.

General Turnitin Assignment settings:

  1. Enter a Name for the Turnitin Assignment. This will display as a link for students, so make it intuitive.
  2. Type a Summary. This will display for students at the top of the assignment page.
  3. Select the 'Submission Type'. The first option is 'File Upload' (default). The second option is 'Text Submission' which will upload pasted text. The third is 'Any Submission Type' which allows either of those formats.
  4. Set the Number Of Parts (separate uploads) you want students to submit that assignment. For each you will set a Start Date, Due Date and Post Date a bit later.
  5. For Maximum File Size for submissions, the Site Upload Limit is often best. This will display to students on their submission page.
  6. Set Anonymous Marking if applicable.
  7. Allow Submission Of Any File Type if students are expected to upload types of file which Turnitin cannot checked for originality.
  8. Display Originality Reports To Students - if set to Yes the Originality Report generated by Turnitin is available to the student. Improve students' academic writing by allowing them to view their Originality Reports and supporting them to interpret it - ideally before the Due Date.
  9. Grade Display - set whether students should see their grade as a fraction or a percentage.
  10. Auto Refresh Grades / Scores - set automatically sync changes to grades. If you have a very large cohort and this slows you down, you can set to Manual (but then you need to remember to refresh).
  11. Set These Values As Assignment Defaults - this only applies to assignments you set up under your own account, and may be helpful if you have many similar assignments to create.

Grade settings

  1. Set a Type - Point is a number out of a Maximum Grade. Scale allows you to choose from any grade Scales set by your institution e.g. Fail / First. None allows you to give feedback only.
  2. Grade Category - if you've set these up in your Moodle Gradebook, then you can select one here.
  3. Grade To Pass - if you have a threshold, setting it here will display passes and fails as green and red in the Gradebook.

Assignment Part settings

  1. Name - make it clear what you expect students to upload to this part. If you're only expecting a single upload, then something like 'Your work' may be more intuitive than Part 1.
  2. Start Date - the earliest date students can submit.
  3. Due Date - the deadline. If you have enabled late submissions any late submission will appear in red.
  4. Post Date - the date that marks and feedback are returned to students.

Originality Report option settings

  1. Allow Submissions after the Due Date - decide whether you wish to allow students to submit after the Due Date. Those submissions will be clearly marked as late.
  2. Report Generation Speed - decide when reports are generated and if students can have multiple attempts to submit. The options are:
    1. Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are not allowed) - Originality reports are created immediately and students may not resubmit papers. Submissions must be deleted by the instructor to enable resubmission.
    2. Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are allowed until the due date) - The Originality Report is generated immediately. Students may resubmit as often as the student wishes up until the due date. Turnitin will require students to wait 24 hours between viewing each subsequent Originality Report. Only the latest submission is available to the student and instructor. When the due date passes the originality report is regenerated and student submissions within the same assignment are included in the comparison which may result in a change to the originality report similarity index. Resubmissions are not allowed after the due date.
    3. Generate reports on due date (resubmissions are allowed until the due date) - Originality reports for submissions are generated on the due date. Resubmissions are allowed up until the due date.
  3. Store Student Papers - choose whether student papers are stored in the Turnitin Student Paper Repository for comparison against future submissions. Choose 'No Repository' for particularly confidential or sensitive student work, or where you are testing the system. Most common option: Standard Repository
  4. Check Against Stored Student Papers - if set to Yes this includes checks against Turnitin's Student Paper Repository in the Originality Reports for papers. If set to No, the similarity index percentage may decrease.
  5. Check Against Internet - determines whether submissions are checked against Turnitin's Internet Repository. If set to No, the similarity index percentage may decrease.
  6. Check against journals, periodicals and publications determines whether submissions are checked against Turnitin's journal, periodical and publication sources. If set to No, the similarity index percentage may decrease.
  7. Exclude bibliography - this setting allows the instructor to choose to exclude text appearing in the bibliography, works cited, or references sections of student papers from being checked for matches when generating Originality Reports. This setting can be overridden later in individual Originality Reports.
  8. Exclude Quoted Material - allows the instructor to exclude text appearing in double quotation marks (i.e. " ") from being checked for matches when generating Originality Reports. This setting can be overridden in individual Originality Reports. Note that this setting will not allow misquotes to be identified, and note also that single quotation marks cannot be excluded.
  9. Exclude Small Matches - allows the instructor to choose to exclude matches that are lower than a certain number of words (determined by the instructor) from being considered when generating Originality Reports. This setting can be overridden in individual Originality Reports.

Grademark option settings

  1. Attach A Rubric To This Assignment - to use a marking grid, enable it here (see Turnitin guidance on setting it up).

Advanced Turnitin Assignment settings:

The rest of the settings are not particular to Turnitin, so we won't cover them here.

Once you have selected all of the required options click 'Save and Display'. The assignment's summary page displays with options to configure each assignment part in more detail.

Further settings for a Turnitin assignment

The summary screen displays settings organised in three tabs which we will describe in turn.

Submission Inbox tab

When you are logged in as a Tutor you can access the student submission inbox by clicking the 'Submission Inbox' tab. Here you can edit some of the settings you previously made (and access the rest via the Update button). You can also configure a Turnitin Rubric or QuickMark set (see Turnitin guidance on these), configure how many submissions display on each page, and refresh the submissions. You can notify students who have not submitted - particularly helpful if the submissions are anonymous. Below those settings is the inbox of students' submitted work.

  • If you have set up the assignment to use groups you will see a 'groups' dropdown located at the top of the page. Selecting a group will filter out all the students in other groups (not compatible with anonymous assignments).
  • Next, you will see the title, start, due and post dates for the assignment. You can edit the dates simply by clicking on the date or the edit icon next to it. The post date is when any grades & feedback will be revealed to students and anonymous assignments will become de-anonymised
  • If you want to bulk download the assignments in either their original format or the Turnitin PDF format use the icons under the Export heading.
  • The next icons provide quick links to the Rubric Manager and the Quickmark Manager.
  • (If enabled) The next line down details any Peermark settings and provides a link to the Peermark Manager.
  • The next section of the screen displays a table of all the submissions for the assignment
  • You can control how many records you see on one page using the Show dropdown in the top left corner of the page. You can also use the Search function in the top left corner of the page if you need to search for one student.
  • If a student's Similarity report says pending, you can click on the Refresh Submissions icon at the top of the table.
  • The 'Student' column shows the name of the student (this will display anonymous if anonymous marking is enabled) The 'Similarity' column shows the percentage similarity score for the submission with a 'heat map' rectangle underneath it. If a submission is still being processed it will display 'Pending' and a grey rectangle. Note: Assignments should not usually take longer than ½ hr after submission to show the similarity report, however, at peak submission times this may take longer. If a report still says pending after several hours, please report this problem to ELE.
  • The last two icons allow you to download or delete that individual submission. Note: Submission time stamps in red have been submitted after the deadline.

Submit on behalf of a student

You can submit on behalf of a student if necessary / permissible by selecting the Cloud-Arrow icon in their record - though this won't work if submissions are set to be anonymous.

Turnitin Tutors tab

This tab is usually only needed if you or colleagues expect to be accessing your assignment through Turnitin's web interface i.e. independently of Moodle. Here you can add any outstanding colleagues who need to be tutors. Difficulties bulk-downloading Turnitin inboxes are sometimes due to not being a Turnitin Tutor.

Turnitin Students tab

This tab is usually only needed if you expect students to be accessing your assignment through Turnitin's web interface i.e. independently of Moodle. Here you can add any outstanding students whose work you need to access via Moodle.
