Template:Moodle site - basic structure A category is a level in the hierarchy of "spaces" or contexts within Moodle. Under the System context, the Category context is the next level.
Category is the highest level container for sub-categories and courses.
Roles assigned at the category level affect every sub-category and course contained within that category.
Sub-Category
A sub-category is a division of a category.
In the image above, we can see that sub-categiories can contain sub-sub-categories of their own, as well as courses at each level.
