Assignment settings

The process of creating a choice activity is divided into two steps. In the first one you have to specify the basic settings, including the assignment type. In the second step, you fill in the options which are specific for the type of assignment you are adding.

In the first step, you will have to fill in the following data:

Assignment name

A short name of the assignment. This will be displayed on the course's homepage.

Description

Type the description of the assignment here. Include precise instructions for students regarding the subject of the assignment, the form in which it should be submitted, the grading criteria, etc.

Grade

You can specify the grade for the assignment here. If you choose a number, this will become the maximum grade for this assignment. Apart from the numbers, you can also pick one of the descriptive grades which have been defined for this course.

Available from

If you set this date, students will not be able to submit their assignments before this date.

Due date

This specifies the deadline of the assignment

Prevent late submissions

If set to "No", assignments submitted after the due date will be marked as late, but students will still be able to submit them.

If set to "Yes", assignment submission will be blocked after the due date.

Assignment type

There are a growing number of assignment types available:

1. Offline activity
   This is useful when the assignment is performed outside of Moodle. It could be something elsewhere on the web or face-to-face.
   Students can see a description of the assignment, but can't upload files or anything. Grading works normally, and students will get notifications of their grades.
2. Online text
   This assignment type asks users to edit a text, using the normal editing tools. Teachers can grade them online, and even add inline comments or changes.
   (If you are familiar with older versions of Moodle, this Assignment type does the same thing as the old Journal module used to do.)
3. Upload a single file
   This type of assignment allows each participant to upload a single file, of any type.
   This might be a Word processor document, or an image, a zipped web site, or anything you ask them to submit.
