Grades
All the grades for each student in a course can be found in the course gradebook, or 'Grader report', accessed from the Grades link either in the nav drawer or navigation block depending on your theme.

The grader report collects items that have been graded from the various parts of Moodle that are assessed, and allows you to view and change them as well as sort them out into categories and calculate totals in various ways. When you add an assessed item in a Moodle course, the gradebook automatically creates space for the grades it will produce and also adds the grades themselves as they are generated, either by the system or by you.

The grades displayed are initially displayed as the raw marks from the assessments themselves, so will depend on how you set those up e.g. an essay out of 36 will appear as however many raw marks that student got, not a percentage (although this can be changed later, see below).

Note that various default options for the gradebook are set at system level by the administrator in and can be marked as being overridable by you, or fixed. This means that the options will not always be set up the same way for every user when they see the grader report for the first time.

Hiding settings globally
New settings hide parts of the user interface:

*Site administration>Grades>General settings: 'Show minimum grade' . If this setting is disabled, the minimum grade will default to zero and cannot be edited (the minimum grade can never be edited).
*Site administration>Grades>Grade category settings: 'Allow category grades to be manually overridden'. If this setting is disabled, users cannot override category grades.

Display
Along the top of the grader report are several rows: first the course, then the category, then the columns for each graded activity (for example: Assignment, Quiz, Lesson). Any activities settings which were left "uncategorised" will appear in the general category which is named after the course by default (any category name can be changed).

You can add a row showing the range of possible scores by selecting 'Show ranges' in 'My report preferences.

There are three ways that the categories can be displayed:

* Grades only - without the category totals column
* Aggregates - Category total column only
* Full view - grades and the aggregates (the totals column for the category)

Each section has a small icon immediately to the right of its name. Clicking this will cycle through these display modes for that category;

Scrolling through the gradebook
The gradebook allows for smooth and stable scrolling horizontally and vertically through grades. It uses the whole window, making it accessible on all platforms.( Note: horizontal scrolling is at the bottom of the browser window, and there is no horizontal scrollbar at the top.)

Sorting by columns
You can sort by any column. Click the symbol near the top of a column to sort by that column (1 below). This will change the symbol to a single down arrow. Clicking again will sort lowest-to-highest, changing the symbol to an up arrow. The arrows will toggle between these two states until you click on a different column.

You can also access the Single view by clicking the pencil icon next to the arrows (2 below).

You can sort the students by clicking the arrow (1 below), access individual user reports by clicking the icon (2 below) and similar to the grade items you can access Single view by clicking the pencil icon (3 below)

Searching and filtering the gradebook
If you change the course settings Group mode to Visible groups or Separate groups a drop-down menu will appear in the gradebook to allow you to filter your students by groups.

It is also possible to search students by first name and last name:

Editing
Note: Editing anything in the gradebook refers to editing the grades only and none of the available operations bear any relationship to editing the main course page i.e. the appearance of your course page cannot be influenced by anything you do in the gradebook. The "Turn editing on" button functions separately from the main course one, so editing can be on in the gradebook, but simultaneously off when you switch back to course view. This is because editing grades and editing the course page are separate capabilities. Roles such as 'non-editing teacher' may only have one or the other.

Altering the grades
You can click "Turn editing on" at the top right to show an edit icon next to each grade. Clicking on the icon will bring up the editing screen for that grade which will allow you to set the grade, its written feedback and a number of other attributes.

Alternatively, you can choose "Quick grading" and "Quick feedback" in 'My preferences' to make the report appear with editable boxes containing each grade, so you can change many at once. This capability can be a real time saver, but make sure to save at reasonable intervals lest a pageful of changes be lost.

Note: If you make changes here, they are then shown highlighted to indicate grades which have been manually changed.

Altering the grades using Single View
There is a new way to enter grades into the grader report using the Single View tab (or listing in the dropdown) under Setup. (This interface can also be accessed by clicking on the pencil icon at the top of the column by the item name).
The single view interface allows you to enter grades in bulk for a specific grade item or a specific user. To change a specific grade or all grades, click on the Override checkbox by the specific grade row or use the Override All link to check every row. If you wish to override all grades with a set grade, check the Bulk Insert checkbox and enter the grade that you wish to insert. You can select whether to fill the grade for just empty grades or for all grades from the dropdown list.
Click on Save and you will now see in the Grader Report that all grades the specific item/user have been overridden with the grade/grades that you entered.

Hiding columns or individual grades
Turning on editing then clicking the "Show show/hide icons" link will give you the familiar show/hide eye icon next to each grade and at the top of each column. For more information, read about grade hiding.

Recalculating
If you change any part of an assessment e.g. alter the maximum grade for one of the questions in a quiz, you may find that the columns do not yet reflect the change you have made. Click Turn editing on twice to force the gradebook to re-check.

Gradebook capabilities
There is just one gradebook capability, View the grader report, which is allowed for the default roles of manager, teacher and non-editing teacher.

Extending the gradebook
The Gradebook can be extended in three main ways:

1. Grade reports
Which are the main way to view and manipulate grades
* LAE Grader Report Alternative to Grader report that scrolls vertically and horizontally without losing student columns or grade item header rows. Lot of additional enhancements.
* Upload PDF Grader Report lets you view assignment grades, comments and lateness in a report

2. Grade import plugins
Which allow data to be imported from external sources

3. Grade export plugins:
Which allow you to export grade data for other systems
* PDF document This is moodle plugin for exporting grades in PDF format. It is developed by using "Moodle PDF library"

Managing a Moodle course
In Moodle, a teacher has responsibility for the materials in their own course. They often also manage enrolments and are able to change the layout of the course page. This quick start guide introduces Moodle's features to those with the Teacher role.

Course set up
A course is a space on a Moodle site where teachers can add learning materials for their students. A teacher may have more than one course and a course may include more than one teacher and more than one group of learners. See the screencast What is a course? or if your course looks different, watch this alternative screencast.

By default a regular teacher can't add a new course. See Adding a new course for information on how courses may be created.

A course can display its materials in a number of ways or 'formats', for example in weekly sections or named topic sections. You can show all the sections at once or just reveal one at a time. See Course settings for more information, or watch the screencast How to lay out a course. If your course looks different, watch this alternative screencast.

Course sections may be renamed by turning on the editing and clicking the configuration icon underneath the section name. Sections may also be moved by drag and drop and sections added or removed by clicking the + or - underneath the bottom section. See Course homepage for more information.

You can also add elements, known as 'blocks', to the right, left or both sides of your central learning area, depending on your theme. For more information see Blocks. Remember that blocks will not display in the Moodle Mobile app so, think carefully about which blocks you really need.

Course enrolment
Before a learner can access your course, they must first be authenticated on the site and that is the responsibility of the site administrator.

There are several enrolment methods available to a teacher, what is available, again, depends on the site administrator. The admin might enrol students into course automatically, or the teacher might be able to let students enrol themselves. Depending on the theme used, this can be done either by clicking the gear menu in the nav drawer link Participants or by clicking Enrolled users from the Users link in the Course administration block. This is the Manual enrolment method. Other options can be seen in the Enrolment methods link and include Self enrolment and Guest access.

An enrolment key may be set if Self enrolment is enabled so that only students with the key can enter. The screencast Enrolling learners gives more information on course enrolment. If your course looks different, watch this earlier screencast on Enrolling learners .

Grading
Every course has its own Gradebook which can record scores from assignments , quizzes , peer assessment workshops, 'branching' lessons, SCORM activities and LTI learning resources.

Other activities such as forums, databases and glossaries can have ratings enabled which will also then be reflected in the gradebook.

Grade items can be manually created from Course administration > Grades > Set up > Categories and items and it is also possible to import and export grades.

Tracking progress
If completion tracking has been enabled for the site and in Course administration > Edit settings, you can then set completion conditions in activity settings. A checkbox will appear next to the activity and a student may either be allowed to tick it manually, or a tick will display once criteria for that particular activity have been met. This feature can be combined with Course completion so that when certain activities have been completed and/or grades obtained, the course itself is marked complete.

Badges can also be issued, manually or based on completion criteria to act as a motivator and record of course progress.

Restricting access
A course can be set to display everything to everyone all the time, or it can be very restrictive, displaying certain items at certain times, to certain groups or based on performance in previous tasks.

Course items and sections may be manually hidden using the 'hide' icon when the editing is turned on. If Restrict access has been enabled by the administrator then a Restrict access section will display in each course activity and resource, allowing you to choose how and when this item will be revealed, and whether to hide it completely or show it greyed out with the conditions for access.

Blocks are items which may be added to the side of any page in Moodle. Different themes allow blocks to be added to the left, right or both sides. They may also be added to the centre of the Dashboard.
What is an IMS content package?
IMS is a body which helps define technical standards for various things, including e-learning material. The IMS Content Packaging specification makes it possible to store chunks of material in a standard format which can be re-used in different systems, without having to convert the material into new formats.

The IMS content package in Moodle enables such content packages to be uploaded and included in Moodle courses. There are various options for displaying content with a navigation menu or buttons etc.

What is a File resource?
Files are not just materials such as word-processed documents or slideshow presentations. All types of files can be uploaded and accessed through Moodle, but the student needs to have the correct software to be able to open them.Different file types are shown with different icons. Files may be added in two ways: They may dragged and dropped directly onto the course page:

Alternatively they may be added by clicking File from the activity chooser.

How is it set up?
To drag and drop a file, with the editing turned on in a course, click and hold the file (1 below), drag it to your chosen section (2), and release. The file will upload and display (3):

#Alternatively, with the editing turned on in a course, choose 'File from the activity chooser.
#Give it a name and, if required, a description, checking the box if you want the description displayed on the course page
#Expand the other settings to select, for example, whether to show students its size, type and date uploaded and how you want the file to display. Find out more about display settings in the documentation File resource settings. (Note for example that an uploaded slideshow presentation will not play as it would on a whiteboard, even if saved as a 'show'. Students will be prompted to download it. A workaround is to upload the presentation to a slidesharing site and embed it.)
#Save the file.

Files from Google Drive and OneDrive
If your admin has enabled the feature in the Google Drive repository and/or the repository then you can select a file from their Google Drive or OneDrive and display it as an 'access controlled link'. Students can only view the file while teachers will be able to edit the file if required. This method is a useful way of displaying files which need updating frequently. However, note that files from OneDrive will not display correctly if they are embedded.

How does it work?
Student view
How students access the file depends on the display settiings and the type of file, and also often the browser the student is using.
Teacher view
Teachers view the files in a similar way to students. They can edit the file settings by clicking the Edit drop down to the right of the file when the editing is turned on.
What is a Label?
A label serves as a spacer on a Moodle course page.It can be used to add text, images, multimedia or code in between other resources in the different sections. It is a very versatile resource and can help to improve the appearance of a course if used thoughtfully. Banners or descriptions may be added to labels to distinguish between and highlight different areas. (Note that excessive use of multimedia (sound, video) in labels can slow down the loading of a course page.)

If teachers have set access restrictions on the Label, these will display to the teacher. Labels are useful when gamifying your Moodle course, for example by revealing an image in a label only when a previous activity was completed.

Managing a Moodle course
A resource is an item that a teacher can use to support learning, such as a file or link. Moodle supports a range of resource types which teachers can add to their courses. In edit mode, a teacher can add resources via the 'Add an activity or resource' link.
Resources appear as a single link with an icon in front of it that represents the type of resource.

Administrators can decide whether or not to force teachers to add descriptions for each resource by enabling or disabling a site-wide setting in Administration > Plugins > Activity modules > Common settings.

*Book - Multi-page resources with a book-like format. Teachers can export their Books as IMS CP (admin must allow teacher role to export IMS)
*File - A picture, a pdf document, a spreadsheet, a sound file, a video file
* - For helping organize files and one folder may contain other folders
*IMS content package - Add static material from other sources in the standard IMS content package format
*Label - Can be a few displayed words or an image used to separate resources and activities in a topic section, or can be a lengthy description or instructions
*Page - The student sees a single, scrollable screen that a teacher creates with the robust HTML editor
*URL - You can send the student to any place they can reach on their web browser, for example Wikipedia

Managing a Moodle course
An activity is a general name for a group of features in a Moodle course. Usually an activity is something that a student will do that interacts with other students and or the teacher.

In Moodle terminology, an Activity, such as Forums or Quizzes, properly means something students can contribute to directly, and is often contrasted to a Resource such as a File or Page, which is presented by the teacher to them. However, the term activity is sometimes for convenience also used to refer to both Activities and Resources as a group.

There are 14 different types of activities in the standard Moodle that can be found when the editing is turned on and the link 'Add an activity or resource' is clicked.

;Assignments: Enable teachers to grade and give comments on uploaded files and assignments created on and off line
;Chat: Allows participants to have a real-time synchronous discussion
;Choice: A teacher asks a question and specifies a choice of multiple responses
;Database: Enables participants to create, maintain and search a bank of record entries
;Feedback: For creating and conducting surveys to collect feedback.
;Forum: Allows participants to have asynchronous discussions
;Glossary: Enables participants to create and maintain a list of definitions, like a dictionary
;H5P activity: Enables H5P content created in the Content bank or on h5p.com to be easily added to a course as an activity.
;Lesson: For delivering content in flexible ways
;(LTI) External tool:Allows participants to interact with LTI compliant learning resources and activities on other web sites. (These must first be set up by an administrator on the site before being available in individual courses.)
;Quiz: Allows the teacher to design and set quiz tests, which may be automatically marked and feedback and/or to correct answers shown
;SCORM: Enables SCORM packages to be included as course content
;Survey: For gathering data from students to help teachers learn about their class and reflect on their own teaching
;Wiki: A collection of web pages that anyone can add to or edit
;Workshop: Enables peer assessment

Additional plugins from the Moodle plugins directory may also be installed on your site.
What is the Quiz activity?
* The Quiz is a very powerful activity that can meet many teaching needs, from simple, multiple-choice knowledge tests to complex, self-assessment tasks with detailed feedback.
* Questions are created and stored separately in a Question bank and can be reused in different quizzes.
*When creating a Quiz you can either make the questions first and add them to the Quiz, or add a Quiz activity (as below) and create the questions as you go along.
#In a course, with the editing turned on, choose Quiz from the activity chooser.
#Give it a name and, if required, a description.
# Expand the other sections to select the settings you want. With the default settings, students can repeat the quiz, moving freely between questions, each on a different page. There is no time limit and scores and feedback display once they have completed the quiz.
#To change any of these defaults, and for more information on configuring your quiz, see Quiz settings
#Click Save and display.
#Click Edit quiz
#Click Add and then click '+ a new question' (If you already made questions in the question bank, then click '+ from question bank' or if you wish to add a question randomly picked from a category of questions, click '+ a random question'.)
Quizzes are visible on the page once you add them so if you don't want them to see it as you are creating questions, hide it until you are ready.
Depending on the settings, students may see questions all on one page or on separate pages. There will be a block linking to each question.

Students can flag questions to alert the teacher to possible queries.

In order to finish the quiz and potentially see their scores (depending on the settings) students must click 'Submit all and finish' when they reach the Summary of attempt page:
What is the Forum activity?
The Forum activity allows students and teachers to exchange ideas by posting comments as part of a 'thread'. Files such as images and media maybe included in forum posts. The teacher can choose to grade and/or rate forum posts and it is also possible to give students permission to rate each others' posts.

#Expand the other sections to define the settings you want. For more help, see Forum settings
#Click Save and display and, optionally, add a post to get started.
Students access the forum by clicking the icon on the course page and depending on the forum type selecting, will typically be see a button to start a new discussion topic. They can sort discussions, subscribe to discussions from the toggle button, and favourite/bookmark discussions from the star icon on the left. This moves the discussion to the top of the list, under any discussions pinned by the teacher.

When starting a new discussion or replying
If they click into a discussion, they have a link to reply and a 'Permalink'.

When replying, a basic text editor is available. Clicking the link Advanced displays the full editor and options such as uploading attachments.

Posts can be edited for a limited time, usually 30 minutes, dependent on the administrator's settings.
Teacher view
Teachers additionally have three dots to the right of the Subscribe option, allowing them to pin, star or lock discussions.

When replying to a forum post, teachers also optionally can send a Private reply which is only seen by that particular student. Students cannot reply to this private reply.

Managing a Moodle course

Add students
The process of adding students to courses is called Enrolment. This is different from adding users to the site, which is known as Authentication. There are various methods of enrolling students into courses, once they have logged in to Moodle.

A teacher can view, activate, add and remove the enrolment methods within their course from the Enrolment methods link accessed either from the gear menu in the nav drawer Participants link, or from the More link in the course gear menu (or in Course administration > Users in the Administration block if you are using a theme other than Boost). It may also be the case that the students are automatically enrolled into the course by an administrative process, and the teacher does not need to do anything.

Students enrol themselves
If Self enrolment is enabled then students can sign up to courses themselves. The teacher can restrict enrolment to those who have been given an Enrolment key and, if needed, a staff member may be given the Keyholder role to manage enrolment keys.

Teachers manually enrol students
If Manual enrolment is enabled (and it usually is) then teachers may add students to their course from the nav drawer Participants link by clicking 'Enrolled users' in the gear menu (or in Course administration > Users in the Administration block if you are using a theme other than Boost).

Allowing guests into a course
Guests may be allowed to view course contents, but not participate in them, if Guest access is enabled. To find out exactly what guests may and may not do in a course, see the page Guest role.

Adding students in bulk
#When using Manual enrolment, the teacher may select and enrol several students at once.
#An administrator can enrol students in bulk into a course with a CSV file. See Bulk enrolments.
#Cohorts, that is, site or category-wide batches of users, may be added to courses using the Cohort sync enrolment method. Note that cohorts must first exist on the site.

Linked courses
The Course meta link enrolment method allows users who are in another course to be automatically enrolled into your course as well. An example might be if a Moodle site has a course for "Staff Only" and a course for "Moodle Help". If the "Staff Only" course is added to the "Moodle Help" course with the course meta link plugin, then every time a new member of staff joins the "Staff Only" course, they will automatically be enrolled in the "Moodle Help" course too.

Teachers can only select from courses in which they are teachers when using this method.

Paying for courses
*If the administrator has enabled the Paypal enrolment method site-wide and enabled it in courses, then the teacher can set a price for a course.
*Note that students still need to have accounts in the site before they can pay for a course.
*Be careful also if you have Self enrolment enabled on your course as well as Paypal; if you don't set an enrolment key with the Self enrolment method, then students could access the course without paying.
New to Assignment? Try our Assignment quick guide.

The assignment activity provides a space into which students can submit work for teachers to grade and give feedback on. This saves on paper and is more efficient than email. It can also be used to remind students of 'real-world' assignments they need to complete offline, such as art work, and thus not require any digital content.

Student submissions are together on one screen of your course. You can require them to submit one or several files and/or to type text essays. It is possible to have them submit work as a group and you can also choose as a teacher to grade their work 'blind' in other words not to see the identities of those who have submitted assignments. Assignments can have deadlines and cut off dates - which you can also extend if necessary.

Assignment (Submission) types
Students can type directly into Moodle, upload files or add media. The options are in the Submission types section and if you don't see a particular option, get the admin to check the Site administration settings in Assignment settings documentation.

Online text: Text typed into the Atto editor is automatically saved and the teacher can set a Word limit which will display a warning if students exceed it.

File submissions: Students can upload files of any type the teacher specifies. The teacher can specify the maximum number of files which may be uploaded and a maximum size for each file.

Students may be able to add a note (comment) to their teacher when the submit their work.

Feedback types
Teachers may give feedback in various ways.

Students may upload documents such as .docx, odt and PDF and the teacher can annotate directly on the student’s submission (requires Ghostscript and unoconv or Google Drive converter to be installed by an admin).

With online text submissions, if the teacher sets “Comment inline” to ‘yes’ they will be able to give feedback on the student’s submission directly in one of two ways:

# The student’s submission will appear in the feedback comments box (if enabled) so teachers can annotate on it and add their feedback comments in the same area.
Which forum do I need?
In the (default) Standard forum for general use, students will see an introduction text in a separate space above the list of discussions. Students see a button to start a new discussion (thread).

In a Single, simple discussion the teachers posts a question and students are able only to reply. They cannot start a new topic of discussion. This is useful if you wish to keep a discussion focused.

The Question and Answer forum is best used when you have a particular question that you wish to have answered. The teacher posts a question and students respond with possible answers. By default a Q and A forum requires students to post once before viewing other students' postings.

The lesson module presents a series of HTML pages to the student who is usually asked to make some sort of choice underneath the content area. The choice will send them to a specific page in the Lesson. In a Lesson page's simplest form, the student can select a continue button at the bottom of the page, which will send them to the next page in the Lesson.
There are 2 basic Lesson page types that the student will see: question pages and content pages. There are also several advanced navigational pages which can meet more specialized needs of the Teacher. The Lesson module was designed to be adaptive and to use a student's choices to create a self directed lesson.

The main difference between a Lesson and other activity modules available in Moodle comes from its adaptive ability. With this tool, each choice the students makes can show a different teacher response/comment and send the student to a different page in the lesson. Thus with planning, the Lesson module can customize the presentation of content and questions to each student with no further action required by the teacher.

There are 14 different types of activities in the standard Moodle that can be found when the editing is turned on and the link 'Add an activity or resource' is clicked.

;Assignments: Enable teachers to grade and give comments on uploaded files and assignments created on and off line
;Chat: Allows participants to have a real-time synchronous discussion
;Choice: A teacher asks a question and specifies a choice of multiple responses
;Database: Enables participants to create, maintain and search a bank of record entries
;Feedback: For creating and conducting surveys to collect feedback.
;Forum: Allows participants to have asynchronous discussions
;Glossary: Enables participants to create and maintain a list of definitions, like a dictionary
;Lesson: For delivering content in flexible ways
;(LTI) External tool:Allows participants to interact with LTI compliant learning resources and activities on other web sites.

A resource is an item that a teacher can use to support learning, such as a file or link. Moodle supports a range of resource types which teachers can add to their courses. In edit mode, a teacher can add resources via the 'Add an activity or resource' link.
Resources appear as a single link with an icon in front of it that represents the type of resource.

Managing resources in several languages
The restriction by language availability condition additional plugin makes it easy to show an English resource only to English users and an activity in French only to French speaking students. See this forum thread for an example.

Managing a Moodle course
There are several ways to track student progress in Moodle. This page outlines what is available to teachers in a course.
Grades
Every course has its own Gradebook which is accessible from Course administration > Gradebook setup. Some activities such as Assignment and Quiz send grades back to this gradebook. It is also possible for teachers to enter grades directly into the gradebook.
[[File:gradebook3.jpg||thumb|frame|Gradebook screencast]]

Competencies
Competencies describe the level of understanding or proficiency of a learner in certain subject-related skills. Competency-based education (CBE), also known as Competency-based learning or Skills-based learning, refers to systems of assessment and grading where students demonstrate these competencies.

Activity completion
If Activity completion is enabled by the administrator and in the course settings, teachers can indicate for each course item how they wish it to be registered as complete. A tick/checkmark will then appear against the activity. Students may either mark it complete manually or the item will automatically be registered as complete once a student has met the specified criteria. These may be viewing a resource, submitting an assignment, posting in a forum or other conditions. The teacher can see an overview of who has completed what in the activity completion report in Course administration > Reports > Activity completion.

Course completion
As an extension of activity completion, enabling Course completion allows for a course to be officially marked as finished, either manually or automatically according to speficied criteria. If the Course completion status block is added, students can see their progress during the course. Teachers can view the overall progress of students towards course completion from Course administration>Reports>Course completion.

Badges
Badges can be awarded either manually or using activity completion settings in a course and are a popular way to motivate students. Students may be awarded badges at different stages of the course for different levels of progress.

Course reports
A number of Course reports are available to the teacher in their course to help them track the progress of their students. In addition to the activity and course completion reports mentioned above (which are only available if these settings are enabled) there are also activity reports, participation reports and general course logs.

Analytics
The Analytics feature, in Moodle 3.4 onwards, provides detailed descriptive and prescriptive reports to support learners at risk.

There are 14 different types of activities in the standard Moodle that can be found when the editing is turned on and the link 'Add an activity or resource' is clicked.

;Assignments: Enable teachers to grade and give comments on uploaded files and assignments created on and off line
;Chat: Allows participants to have a real-time synchronous discussion
;Choice: A teacher asks a question and specifies a choice of multiple responses
;Database: Enables participants to create, maintain and search a bank of record entries
;Feedback: For creating and conducting surveys to collect feedback.
;Forum: Allows participants to have asynchronous discussions
;Glossary: Enables participants to create and maintain a list of definitions, like a dictionary
;Lesson: For delivering content in flexible ways
;(LTI) External tool:Allows participants to interact with LTI compliant learning resources and activities on other web sites.

What is the Assignment activity?
Assignments allow students to submit work to their teacher for grading. The work may be text typed online or uploaded files of any type the teacher’s device can read. Grading may be by simple percentages or custom scales, or more complex rubrics may be used. Students may submit as individuals or in groups.
How is it set up?
*In a course, with the editing turned on, choose 'Assignment' from the activity chooser.
*Give it a name and, in the description explain what the students must submit. You can upload a help or example document from the Additional files area.
* Expand the other settings to select, for example, availability times, how you want them to submit and how you plan to give them feedback. (Comment inline allows you to annotate directly on their submitted work.)
*If you want them to verify they are submitting their own work, or if you want to prevent them changing their submission once uploaded, explore the Submission settings. To have them submit in group, explore Group submission settings (ensuring your course has groups)
*To use a rubric instead of a single grade scale, change the Grading method to Rubric and, once the assignment is saved, create or locate the rubric from the Advanced grading link in the Assignment administration block on the side.

Note: Ask your administrator to check the assignment defaults if you are missing a particular setting.

How does it work?
Student view
*Students click the assignment link and click “Add submission” (1)
*Depending on the assignment settings, they either have a text box into which to type their work or an upload area to submit their file (2)
*They may be able to return to their work and redraft it, or they might have to click a submit button to send in a final version which cannot be changed.
*See Assignment settings for more information.

*Once students have submitted work, click on the assignment and click “Grades”
*The exact view depends on the teacher and admin settings. See Assignment settings for more detail.
* Here, the submission may be annotated (1) and/or downloaded (2); a grade entered (3) and individual feedback given (4). The teacher saves the changes (5) and moves to the next student (6)

# If the admin settings allow it, the student’s submission will appear in a large box to the left, allowing the teacher to annotate using comments, highlighting, stamps and other features.

Feedback comments: allows graders to leave comments about the students' submissions as well as grades. NEW IN 3.6 Media and other files may be added when giving feedback. See video Assignment feedback enhancements

Annotate PDF appears if this setting is enabled by the Site administrator in the Manage assignment feedback plugins section of Site admin and will allow the teacher to annotate using comments, stamps and other features.

Offline grading worksheet gives the teacher a link to download the grading list as a spreadsheet. They will then be able to enter grades and feedback comments offline and then re-upload the sheet. See Using Assignment for more information.

Feedback files allows graders to upload files with feedback when marking. These files may be the marked up student assignments, documents with comments, a completed marking guide, or spoken audio feedback.

Grading assignments
Assignments may be graded with simple Grade points or customisable Scales. If you change the Grading method to Advanced grading, you can then use a Marking guide or Rubric.
