Introduction
This block has been developed originally for the teachers of the university Polytechnic of Montreal (as a summer internship).
The needs that the teachers had is to let the students being able to form their groups, with groups already created by the teachers the standard way.

Social Student Group Formation
Since the students are the ones that form the groups, it means that there is a social interaction that has to be considered.

There are two ways to join a group:
# A Student sends an invitation to a group's <del>teamleader</del> teamcreator.
# A TeamCreator sends an invitation to a student to join its group.

There are some more few things that are important to know for the teamcreator:
* if the group is originally empty, the first student that try to send an invitation become the teamcreator.
* the teamCreator of a group is defined by the timestamp of the mdl_groups_members "timeadded" field.
** If a teamCreator quits the group, the next student that has the min(timeadded timestamp) become the next teamCreator (or the group is empty).

Why There is a TeamCreator?
The reason why we added the concept of a teamleader is because we were at the problem where if a student has sent an invitation to a group's members:
* All the members should accept the student's invitation for him/her to join the group (which increase the complexity!)
* It is not fun for the students if they HAVE to login to send an invitation to a group in which they know they will be part.
In fact this is the major reason why a teamcreator has been used has a main concept for the block.
Because how the groups are formed is normally someone in the group that write the names of the other students of the group and give the paper to the teacher for the group formation.

Note: invitation will be changed for request in the future.
Understand the <del>invitation</del> Request system
The most complex part of the block, is the request system between the students
to join a specified group.

little icones signification
The student/teamcreator can encounter 4 type of relation with the group.
# : meaning you're already part of the group.
# : meaning you can join the group.
## You are already part of the group that has this icone.
## You are part of another group that has the same grouping that the group having this icone.
# : meaning the request is in pending.
## The student has sent a request to the teamcreator of the group and wait to be accepted.
## The teamcreator has sent the request to the student and wait for him to accept it.
# checkbox: you can select the group to send a request to join. (all clear to send the request)

student sends a request to the teamcreator
In this context, the student is seeking for a group that he/she wants to join. When the student is in the "join a group" tab, he can see the different groups he can send a request to join.

teamcreator sends a request to a student to join his group
The teamcreator has to select the group in which he wants to add student(s).

A Green Dot indicates the current group that will send the request(s) to the student(s).

A Red Dot indicates that the group is not currently selected to send requests.

DataBase model for the request system
The information that is kept in the DB for the request system is composed of 4 important elements.

# group_id: the id of the group to join.
# user_id: the id of the user that will be added to the group.
# course_id: the id of the course in which the group formation takes place.
# action_from: from who the request has been sent? (student or teamleader)

with those informations, and equipped of the course_id, when a student or a teamcreator accepts a request.
the mapping can be done between the member and the group.

The Group selection activity module allows students to select a group in the course that they want to be members of. A limit can be placed on the number of users in every group. The activity can also be set to open and close at specific times.

Background
The first versions of such functionality appeared already for Moodle 1.4. The most recent version has been written by Petr Škoda and Helen Foster with the help of other developers.

Features
There are two global settings:
* Require activity description (default Yes) - if disabled users do not need to enter a description for each activity

* Max members per group (default 0) - if enabled this sets a numeric limit for group sizes, 0 being unlimited

The activity has a number of options available when adding to a course
* Select group from grouping (Default all groups) - you can restrict the groups that are shown to students if you have them in a certain grouping
* Require password (default none) - you can set a password that is required to confirm a group selection
* Max members per group (default 0) - if enabled this sets a numeric limit for group sizes, 0 being unlimited
* Open from (default disabled) - if enabled selections can only be made after this time
* Open until (default disabled) - if enabled selections can only be made before this time

Usage
* When a student is faced with the activity they just need to click on the correct button to select a group

* If a password has been set they will be faced with a password page to confirm before the selection is complete

Location: Word Censorship settings link in Administration > Modules > Filters

The word censorship filter enables certain user-selected words to be "blacked out" in the flow of the text. The primary use is for censoring obscene or other unwanted words in the text.

In Moodle 1.6 onwards, the word censorship settings page allows the administrator to edit a list of words via a web interface. For backwards compatibility, the old list in the language pack is retained and will be used if the list on the settings page is empty. To avoid inadvertently causing offence, there is no default list on the settings page.

Previous word censorship
Prior to Moodle 1.6, the list of words is contained in the language pack in the file censor.php (Example: for German use lang/de/censor.php). To change the word list you need to directly edit this file. A default list is provided for many languages. Warning: You may find the content of this file offensive.
This page can appear if you have not enabled statistics. To enable statistics, log into your Moodle as an administrator. Then, in the Site Administration menu, under Server --> Statistics ensure that they are enabled.

If you have enabled Statistics recently you should note that statistics are collected by a background task and take some time to become available. Try again later, but do note the time for statistics job to be run in the Site Administration page noted above.

Scorm
Here is a list of tools to create SCORM packages, both open source and commercial. Moodle is a modular authoring tool for courses but at this time does not create SCORM packages.

Free OpenSource
eXe OPEN SOURCE SCORM Development Package
The eXe project is developing a freely available Open Source authoring application to assist teachers and academics in the publishing of web content without the need to become proficient in HTML or XML markup. Resources authored in eXe can be exported in IMS Content Package, SCORM 1.2, or IMS Common Cartridge formats or as simple self-contained web pages.

http://exelearning.org/

Xerte OPEN SOURCE SCORM Development Package
The Xerte Project provides a full suite of open source tools for elearning developers and content authors producing interactive learning materials.

Standalone tool: Xerte http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/

Online tool: Toolkits http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/toolkits.htm

ScenariChain Opale / OpaleSup
Website and community : http://scenari-platform.org/projects/scenari/en/pres/co/

Freeware not OpenSource
MyUdutu
Free software for creating elearning courses with flash interactivity. Website here: http://www.udutu.com/ and an explanatory video here: http://www.udutu.com/my_udutu_video.html It is free to sign up and make the courses - there are many customisable templates enabling users to import images/video/audio/etc and incorporate them into scored questions of varying formats. The finished course can be exported as SCORM 2004 or SCORM 1.2 compliant -again for free and then hosted on a Moodle or other site. (The courses can also be hosted on the udutu site, either for free but with a watermark or for a fee) Quite intuitive to use and offering many features, it is however dependent on good connection to the site as it is created online. Also doesn't seem to like working in Opera.

MOS Solo
SCORM 2004 authoring tool. Entirely free.

http://www.mossolo.com/

Reload
Reusable eLearning Object Authoring and Delivery - NB it is rather technical and may only be suitable for those with an understanding of HTML and the underlying SCORM specification.

http://www.reload.ac.uk/

Courselab
CourseLab is a free program but is not open source. Feb 2009 current version is 2.4. Received an eLearnings Best of 2007 award.

CourseLab version 2.4 has a few bugs. First is with audio. Sometimes (for some reason not known to CourseLab) the audio will restart, creating an echo effect. You will need to un-check the "autostart" mark of the Video object (vidoe object is used to insert audio too)and then define an action on some event that fits the case (for example on the slide's afterdisplay event) choose METHOD (yourvideoobject, PLAY. this will play the audio after the slide is displayed.

Another issue is with FireFox browsers displaying graphics with CourseLab. It is stated in user's manual that some objects utilize Explorer-specific features and author should avoid using them, if he wants to use the course in multi-browser environment. These are: Gradient Box and all AutoShapes. AutoShapes are VML-objects and VML (Vector Markup Language) is not supported by FireFox. SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics - another vector format) could be the good alternative, but there are still problems with displaying inline SVG-objects in both Gecko-family and IE. (from CourseLab Support)

If these FireFox/Image display problems are not an issue then be sure to install the latest browser plug-ins.

There are some problems with Moodle configuration see http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=96338#p425335

The upload users utility is a simple but powerful way to upload user information into Moodle. It is possible to either create authenticate users, or to create authenticate users and enrol them into a course at once.

*Note: that recent versions of Moodle have tools to keep the site administrators personal maintenance work down besides this particular form of manual authentication. For example, connecting to existing external databases or letting the users create their own accounts. See the Authentication section in the admin menus.

The user data text file must follow a certain format, as described below.

Upload file format
Users may be imported, enrolled on courses and organised into groups via flat file.

If you are sure you want to import multiple user accounts from a text file, then you need to format your text file as follows:

* Each line of the file contains one record
* Each record is a series of data separated by commas
* The first record of the file is special, and contains a list of fieldnames. This defines the format of the rest of the file.

:Required fieldnames: these fields must be included in the first record, and defined for each user
:

username, password, firstname, lastname, email

:
Remember that validity checks for the username, password, and email fields will be performed. Usernames can only contain alphabetical letters or numbers and should not contain an underscore; however, a period is permissible. Passwords should meet the requirements specified for the site's Password policy. Emails should be in the format of a valid email.

:Default fieldnames: these are optional - if they are not included then the values are taken from the primary admin
:

institution, department, city, country, lang, auth, timezone

:Optional fieldnames: all of these are completely optional. The course names are the "shortnames" of the courses - if present then the user will be enrolled as students in those courses. Group names must be associated to the corresponding courses, i.e. group1 to course1, etc.
:

idnumber, icq, phone1, phone2, address, url, description, mailformat, maildisplay, htmleditor, autosubscribe, course1, course2, course3, course4, course5, group1, group2, group3, group4, group5, type1, type2, type3, type4, type5

:User Profile Field: all the user profile fields or custom profiles shall use the following convention (moodle 1.9): profile_field_<your_custom_field>.

Roles amendments: Note that since roles have been added in Moodle 1.7, there is a new (better) fieldname to use for enrolments and that is role. You can use role field instead of the legacy type field to specify roles directly - use either role short name or id (numeric names of roles are not supported).

* Commas within the data should be encoded as &#44 - the script will automatically decode these back to commas.
* For Boolean fields, use 0 for false and 1 for true.
* Types are used to tell Moodle whether the user is a student or a teacher if a corresponding course exists (e.g. type2 corresponds to course2). 1 = Student, 2 = Editing Teacher, and 3 = Non-editing Teacher. If type is left blank, or if no course is specified, the user is default to student.
* Force password change: Set the password field for desired users to changeme.
* Turn email off: The parameter emailstop must be set to 1 if the email address should not work. If you set it to 0 then the email address is switched on. If you want to have all the email addresses active then you do not need the additional parameter in your upload file.
* For courses, use the short name for the course
* Note: If a user is already registered in the Moodle user database, this script will return the userid number (database index) for that user, and will enrol the user as a student in any of the specified courses WITHOUT updating the other specified data.

Here is an example of a valid import file:

username, password, firstname, lastname, email, lang, idnumber, maildisplay, course1, group1, type1

jonest, verysecret, Tom, Jones, jonest@someplace.edu, en, 3663737, 1, Junk102, Section 1, 1

reznort, somesecret, Trent, Reznor, reznort@someplace.edu, en_us, 6736733, 0, Junk102, Section 3, 3

(Text copied from Upload users help file.)

Updating existing accounts
By default Moodle assumes that you will be creating new user accounts, and skips records where the username matches an existing account. However, if you set "Update existing accounts" to Yes, the existing user account will be updated.

When updating existing accounts you can change usernames as well. Set "Allow renames" to Yes and include in your file a field called
oldusername
.

Warning: any errors updating existing accounts can affect your users badly. Be careful when using the options to update.

Encoding
Prior to Moodle 1.9, the file must have the same encoding as your language pack. In Moodle 1.7 and 1.8 it is always UTF-8.

In Moodle 1.9 onwards, the encoding may be selected from a large list, including ISO-8859-1.

Upload users preview
Hints
Spreadsheet
If you use a spreadsheet program such as Excel to create your .csv file, check the resulting output in a text editor before you upload it. It is possible to get trailing commas on each line from an empty field if you have added and deleted columns of information prior to saving the final file. Also check the character encoding. A csv file is a simple text file (ASCII or Unicode) that can be used to upload user accounts.

Also, Excel translates passwords that begin with - (minus) or + (plus) as zero. Even when saving as .csv and saying "Yes" to "Keep this format, and leave out any incompatible features." Check for this before uploading, as a zero halts the upload process.

Country
The country should be written as a two letter code, e.g. BE for Belgium, NL for the Netherlands, and should be written in capitals. If not, it gets abbreviated to two letters, which can cause an invalid country entry in the database.

Course categories organize courses for all Moodle site participants. Miscellaneous is the default course category on a new Moodle site. A course creator or administrator can put all courses in the miscellaneous category. However, teachers and students will find it easier to find their classes if they are organized in descriptive categories.

The list of courses within a category by default shows the teachers and the summary of each course. If the number of courses within a category exceeds 9 (10 or more), then a short list without teachers and summary is shown.

Adding a category
Most people organize their courses by department and college or by topic. Be sure to test the organizational scheme with a few users before entering a large number of courses, to save time in moving them later.

Adding categories is very simple:

#From the Site Administration block, click Courses then "Add/edit courses".
#At the top of the "Course Categories" page is a text area and an "Add new category" button. Type the name of your new category in the text area and click the button.

Editing a category
You can edit a category in Moodle 1.9, which gives you access to change the Parent category (if applicable), change the name of the cateory, add or edit the course category description, and force a theme for the category (if enabled in Administration block > Appearance > Themes > Theme Settings).

If the category is visible, the course category description will be displayed to users when they enter the category, above the list of courses.

Adding sub course categories
Course sub-categories may be created by adding a new course category then using the "move category to" drop-down menu to move the category inside another category. Similarly, sub-sub-categories etc. may be created.

Starting with Moodle 1.9, you can add sub-categories directly in the category you want it in. Simply enter the course category, Turn Editing On, and click 'Add a sub-category'.

Hiding categories
Categories may be easily hidden or shown via Administration block > Courses > Add/edit courses. Click on the icon to show or hide a category. Hidden categories are only visible to site administrators. By default, all courses inside a hidden category are not available for students to access, but you can go to Administration > Front Page >Front Page Settings and click the checkbox to 'Allow visible courses in hidden categories'.

Setting category depth
You can limit the number of categories that are displayed in the front page 'List of Categories' or 'Combo List' by adding the following line to your config.php:

$CFG->max_category_depth = n;

Where n is the maximum number of categories you wish to display.
