A course format refers to the layout of a course. The course format can be selected in ''Settings > Course administration > Edit settings''.

An administrator can enable, disable or delete course formats for courses in ''Settings>Site administration>Plugins>Courses>Course formats>Manage course formats.'' They can also change the order in which available course formats are displayed to teachers in the course settings.

{|
|[[File:managecourseformats.png|thumb|Manage course formats screen for admins]]
|}

==Standard course formats==

===Weekly format===
[[Image:Weeklyoutline.png|thumb|Weekly format example]] The course is organized week by week, with a clear start date and a finish date. Moodle will create a section for each week of your course. You can add content, forums, quizzes, and so on in the section for each week.

:''TIP:'' If you want all your students to work on the same materials at the same time, this would be a good format to choose.

:''NOTE:'' Make sure your course start date is correct. If it is not your weeks will have the wrong date on it. This is especially important if you are restoring a course to use with a new section of students.

===Topics format===
[[Image:Topicoutline.png|thumb|Topic format example]]The course is organised into topic sections that a teacher can give titles to. Each topic section consists of activities, resources and labels.

TIP: This is great to use if your course is objective based and each objective may take different amounts of time to complete. An example of this would be scaffolding where the students are building upon the knowledge from earlier topics.

===="Show only one section"====

With the Weekly format and the Topics format it is possible via ''Settings > Course administration > Edit settings'' to "show one section per page". Here is a course with three topics, with the second one currently shown. The links left and right lead to topics 1 and 3:

[[File:showonlyonesection.png]]

''Notes:''
#The course home page shows just the section names and any text in the section description, with the names being clickable.
#If editing is ON, on the Main course page, then you will see all the content in all the sections.
#There is a link at the bottom "Return to Main course page" on each single section page.

===Social format===
[[Image:Socialformat.png|thumb|Social format example]] This format is oriented around one main [[Forum module|forum]], the social forum, which appears listed on the main page. It is useful for situations that are more free form. They may not even be courses. The [http://moodle.org/course/view.php?id=55 Moodle Lounge] is an example of a social format course.

The social forum can be edited by clicking the 'Update this forum' button on the social forum page. The forum introduction is displayed at the top of the course page.

===SCORM format===
The SCORM format only has 1 section, and allows teacher to insert a pre-built SCORM package. Moodle can use SCORM packages as a content type (see [[SCORM module]]), or as a course format.

An example of SCORM format is [http://school.demo.moodle.net/course/view.php?id=112 the New Staff Induction course on the School demo site]

Note: If you have a large SCORM object you want to use as an entire course, then you can select this course format and students will only be able to interact with the SCORM object, not the rest of the Moodle tools.

==Contributed Course Formats==
The Moodle community has developed a number of course formats, available in the [https://moodle.org/plugins/browse.php?list=category&id=19 plugins directory]. If you plan to create a new one, see [https://docs.moodle.org/dev/Course_formats Developers documentation].

See MDL-27646 and MDL-28555 and maybe the discussion http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=175758#p770737

===Collapsed Topics and its sister format, Collapsed Weeks===
These are formats that are essentially the same as the standard Topic and Weekly formats but with a 'toggle' for each section except '0'. The toggles' purpose is to reduce the amount of initial information presented to the user thus reducing the 'scroll of death' that can plague courses with a lot of content. The 'state' of the toggles is remembered on a per course per user basis. Collapsed Weeks automatically opens the current week. For more information, please visit [[Collapsed_Topics_course_format]] and [[Collapsed_Weeks_course_format]].

==== Demonstration ====

For a demonstration of 'Collapsed Topics' and its latest structure enhancement please see this video:

<mediaplayer>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvo-OseVKr8</mediaplayer>

===Daily format===
The [https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_days daily format] is a modification of the weekly format that shows sections by day rather than by week.

===Grid format===
The [https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_grid grid format] is a modular and visual course format. Hides all topics and creates a grid of icons (one for each topic) with short titles. Clicking on an icon brings up the content from the corresponding topic in a "lightbox" style display.

===Menutopic format===
The [https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_menutopic menutopic format] allows you to display the topics/sections in a menu.

===Noticeboard format===
The [https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_noticebd Noticeboard format] presents the latest post in the news forum at the top of the course.

===Onetopic format===
The [https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_onetopic onetopic format] shows each topic in a tab, keeping the current tab between calls to resources, in such a way that when it returns from a module as the blog or the glossary it returns to tab from where you started. This format is based on the Moodle standard format: “Topics”.

===Topic format (colors)===
The [https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_colours colored topic format] is based on the 'Topics' standard format and allows a teacher to specify the foreground and background colours for each course section.

===Flexible sections format===
The [https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_flexsections flexible sections format] for Moodle 2.4+ allows to have nested sections and each section may be displayed expanded (with all content on the parent section page) or collapsed (as a link to a separate page)

===Single activity format===
The [https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_singleactivity single activity format] for Moodle 2.4+ does not have a course main page and immediately redirects to the activity. It is similar to SCORM format except that it can have any activity type.

Other contributed course formats are available from the [http://moodle.org/plugins modules and plugins database].
By default a regular teacher can't add a new course. To add a new course to Moodle you need to have either [[Administrator|Adminstrator]], [[Course creator|Course Creator]] or [[Manager|Manager]] rights.

==Adding a course==
To add a course:
*Go to ''Settings>Site Administration>Courses>Add/edit courses''

[[File:Addeditcourses.jpg]]

*Choose the category where you want your course to be. For more information see [[Course categories|Course categories]]
*Click the "Add a new course" button
*Enter the [[Course settings|course settings]], then click the "Save changes" button.
*On the next screen, choose your students/teachers to assign to the course.

==Deleting a course(s)==

A regular teacher can't delete a course. Administrators and managers (i.e. users with a role for which the capability [[Capabilities/moodle/course:delete|moodle/course:delete]] is allowed) can delete courses. A [[Course creator|Course creator]] can delete courses they have created themselves.

To delete a course (as an administrator or manager):
*Go to ''Settings > Site Administration > Courses > Add/edit courses''
*Click the course's category (to drill down the category tree) and find the course you wish to delete. Or use the "Search course" textbox at the bottom of the category list.
*Click the "X" icon to the right of the course's name to delete it.

You can delete multiple courses by:
*Creating a new (temporary) category. You can name it "To be deleted".
*Select and '''move''' the "About to be deleted" courses to that category ("To be deleted").
*Delete the category ("To be deleted") and choose "Delete ALL - cannot be undone".

There is no user interface for course creators to delete courses they have created, however they can do so by editing the URL of the course from <nowiki>http://yourmoodlesite.net/course/view.php?id=N</nowiki> to <nowiki>http://yourmoodlesite.net/course/delete.php?id=N</nowiki> (replacing 'view' with 'delete').

==Course requests==

*There is a course request feature which can be enabled by the administrator in ''Settings > Site administration > Courses > Course request''.
*The default category for new courses requested can be selected from this screen, and users who will be notified when courses are requested can also be selected here. (These are users with the capability [[Capabilities/moodle/site:approvecourse|moodle/site:approvecourse]].)

[[File:Courserequest.png]]

*A button will then appear on the All courses page for users to request a new course. The All courses page can be accessed via a link in the [[Courses block]].

By default, all authenticated users can make course requests (after you have enabled it). It is controlled by the capability [[Capabilities/moodle/course:request|moodle/course:request]].

{{Course enrolment}}
==Enrolment methods==
Depending upon which enrolment methods are enabled for the site (by an administrator in ''Settings > Site administration > Plugins > Enrolments > [[Enrolment plugins|Manage enrol plugins]]''), some or all of the following are available within a course:

===Manual enrolment===
*This enables users to be enrolled manually in ''Settings > Course administration > Users > Enrolled users''.
*It allows the teacher of the course to manage individual or collective enrolment to their course themselves - for example: if a new student arrives to class unexpectedly with just a login to the site, they may be enrolled by the teacher into their course without any input from an administrator.
*See [[Manual_enrolment|Manual enrolment]] for full details of how this can work in your course.

===Self enrolment===
*This allows users to enrol themselves into a course, either directly or via an enrolment key ("course password") The teacher does not then have to manually add students.
*More than one instance of the self enrolment method can be used so that when users enrol themselves they are assigned different roles e.g. certain users can be assigned the role of student and other users can be assigned the role of non-editing teacher
*The self-enrolment method also allows for users to enrol themselves into groups by using a group enrolment key.
*See [[Self_enrolment|Self enrolment]] for full details of how this can work in your course.

===Guest access===
*This allows those with the guest role to view the contents of a course.
*Users with the "guest role" may be visitors who do not have an account on your Moodle, or users who do have an account ("authenticated users") but who would just like to explore your course.
*It is possible to add an enrolment key so that only those guest users you wish to grant access can enter the course
*Entering a course with guest access doesn't allow a user to participate in any activities; they can only view information.
*See [[Guest_access|Guest access]] for full details of how this can work in your course.

===Cohort sync===
*A cohort is a set of users which has been added either to the site as a whole or to a particular category and which can then be made available in a course through the cohort-sync enrolment plugin.
*Only an administrator or a manager can use this plugin.
*See [[Cohort_sync|Cohort sync]] for full details of how this can work in your course.

===Course meta link===
*This allows users who are in another course to be automatically enrolled into your course as well. An example might be if a Moodle site has a course for "Staff Only" and a course for "Moodle Help". If the "Staff Only" course is added to the "Moodle Help" course with the course meta link plugin, then every time a new member of staff joins the "Staff Only" course, they will automatically be enrolled in the "Moodle Help" course as well.
*Teachers can only select from courses in which they are teachers when using this method.
*See [[Course_meta_link|Course meta link]] for full details of how this can work in your course.

===PayPal===
*This allows users to pay for a course. The PayPal enrolment plugin needs to be enabled sitewide by the administrator and the plugin needs to be added to a course by the administrator or a manager.
*The course teacher can select a cost(and currency for their course) along with other course-specific requirements.
*See [[Paypal_enrolment|PayPal enrolment]] for full details of how this can work in your course.

==Managing enrolment methods==
[[Image:Enrolment methods1.png]]

Managers and teachers (and any other users with the capability [[Capabilities/moodle/course:enrolconfig|moodle/course:enrolconfig]]) can manage enrolment methods in ''Settings > Course administration > Users > Enrolment methods''.

* To add a new method, select it from the dropdown menu.
* To remove any unused enrolment method, click the delete icon (X) opposite it.
* To temporarily disable an enrolment method, click the show/hide icon (an eye) opposite it. (This ensures that the settings are remembered if the enrolment method is later re-enabled.)
* To change the order in which the enrolment methods are checked, use the up/down arrows. If a user can enrol via more than one enrolment method, the one highest in the list wins. ''Example needed here please!''
The manual enrolments plugin allows users to be enrolled manually via a link in the course administration settings. The plugin has to be enabled by the site administrator (see [[Enrolment plugins]]) and should normally be enabled as certain other enrolment plugins, such as self enrolment, require it.

==Course settings==
===Checking you have manual enrolment in your course===
*In a course, go to ''Settings > Course administration > Users > Enrolment methods''
*Make sure Manual enrolments has its "eye" opened:

[[File:Manualenrolments.png]]

===Editing the manual enrolment method===

Managers (and any other users with the capability [[Capabilities/enrol/manual:config|enrol/manual:config]]) can edit the manual enrolment method in the course and set the default enrolment period and default role in ''Settings > Course administration > Users > Enrolment methods''.

{|
|[[File:enrolmenexpirynotification.png|thumb|The manual enrolment screen (Click to enlarge)]]
|}

It is possible also for students and/or teachers to be notified when enrolments expire by selecting either "Enroller only" or "Enroller and enrolled user" from the dropdown "Notify before enrolment expires" and a time in "Notification threshold".

====Editing individual enrolment times====

{{New features}}
It is possible to edit the date and hour of an individual's enrolment from ''Settings>Course administration>Users>Enrolled users'' by clicking the edit icon in the enrolment methods column for the user in question. This then brings up a screen where the date and time can be modified.

{|
|[[File:individualenrolment24.png|thumb|Click the edit icon in the enrolment methods column for the user]]
|[[File:individualenrolment24.png|thumb|Modifying the date and time]]
|}

==Admin settings==
The manual enrolment plugin may be enabled or disabled throughout the site in ''Settings > Site administration > Plugins > Enrolments > Manage enrol plugins.''

===Shared settings for all courses===
Shared settings for all manual enrolments in courses may be specified in ''Settings>Site administration>plugins>enrolments>Manual enrolments'':
* Enrolment expiration action - specifies what happens when user enrolments reach expiration date. Please note that option "Unenrol user from course" purges grades, group memberships, preferences and other user related data from the courses.
* Hour to send enrolment expiry notifications - specify hour for sending expiration notifications.

===Default enrolment settings in new courses===
Default settings for manual enrolment in new courses may be specified in ''Settings>Site administration>plugins>enrolments>Manual enrolments'':
* Add instance to new courses- if this is enabled, then whenever a new course is created, manual enrolments will automatically added to new courses.
* Enable manual enrolments - this specifies if enrol instances are enabled by default in new courses, it is strongly recommended to keep this setting enabled.
* Default role - this sets the default role, which is normally student and may be altered by a teacher in a course.
* Default enrolment duration - this sets the default length of enrolment in new courses.
* Notify before enrolment expires - specifies if teacher or optionally students should be notified before the expiration.
* Notification threshold - specify how many days should be users notified before the enrolment expiration.

== Manual enrolment method options==

Only one instance of manual enrolment method is allowed in each course, the options are:
* Enable manual enrolments - if disabled all users enrolled via this plugin can not access course.
* Default role - the preselected role when enrolling users. Teachers may change the role when enrolling users.
* Default enrolment duration - default length of enrolment.
* Notify before enrolment expires - select if you want the teachers or students to be notified before the enrolment expiration.
* Notification threshold - specify how long before expiration should be users notified.
