Location: Category link in ''Site Administration > Courses > Add/edit courses''

Course categories organize courses for all Moodle site participants. Miscellaneous is the default course category on a new Moodle site. A course creator or administrator can put all courses in the miscellaneous category. However, teachers and students will find it easier to find their classes if they are organized in descriptive categories.

The list of courses within a category by default shows the teachers and the summary of each course. If the number of courses within a category exceeds 9 (10 or more), then a short list without teachers and summary is shown.

==Adding a category==
Most people organize their courses by department and college or by topic. Be sure to test the organizational scheme with a few users before entering a large number of courses, to save time in moving them later.

Adding categories is very simple:

#From the Site Administration block, click Courses then "Add/edit courses".
#At the top of the "Course Categories" page is a text area and an "Add new category" button. Type the name of your new category in the text area and click the button.

==Editing a category==
{{Moodle 1.9}}You can edit a category in Moodle 1.9, which gives you access to change the Parent category (if applicable), change the name of the cateory, add or edit the course category description, and force a theme for the category (if enabled in ''Administration block > Appearance > Themes > Theme Settings'').

If the category is visible, the course category description will be displayed to users when they enter the category, above the list of courses.

==Adding sub course categories==

Course sub-categories may be created by adding a new course category then using the "move category to" drop-down menu to move the category inside another category. Similarly, sub-sub-categories etc. may be created.

{{Moodle 1.9}}Starting with Moodle 1.9, you can add sub-categories directly in the category you want it in. Simply enter the course category, Turn Editing On, and click 'Add a sub-category'.

==Hiding categories==

Categories may be easily hidden or shown via ''Administration block > Courses > Add/edit courses''. Click on the icon to show or hide a category. Hidden categories are only visible to site administrators. By default, all courses inside a hidden category are not available for students to access, but you can go to ''Administration > Front Page >Front Page Settings'' and click the checkbox to 'Allow visible courses in hidden categories'.

==Setting category depth==

You can limit the number of categories that are displayed in the front page 'List of Categories' or 'Combo List' by adding the following line to your config.php:

$CFG->max_category_depth = n;

Where n is the maximum number of categories you wish to display.

==Assigning users a role in a course category==

To assign users a role in a course category, access ''Site Administration > Courses > Add/edit courses'', click on the course category then click the 'Assign roles' link at top right of the page.

==Overview==

Denise presented about the 40 year history of [[The Open University]] in the UK with being a recognised teaching and research university which delivers its courses flexibility and which therefore must engage with and development educational technology systems.

OU makes extensive use of Moodle and in tailoring Moodle to suit its needs has fostered significant developments in the Moodle core code. Although Denise didn't claim as such, OU is the single largest instance of Moodle (in terms of users), and is therefore a key demonstration of its scalability.

The Open University (UK) - 40 years old; only educational institution across 4 countries (England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland)

DK indicated separation of material development and material delivery (separately bundled) is somewhat problematic - OU wants to bring the designers closer to the students.

* Team teaching; long course production (typical course is 3 years in development) - quite different from individualised Australian approach with a v. short lead-in
* OU challenge is to speed this up.
* Courses are very structured / industrial (may have up to 5,000 students enrolled in a subject)
* Feedback is critical
* Calendars feature strongly - and multiple calendars with
* Lots of democratic consultation, getting student feedback, piloting, trialling etc.
* Scalability is v. important - therefore, say no to lots of technological opportunities and tools
* Strong emphasis on high quality feedback - OU see it as central
* Different kinds of feedback for different tasks, wide range

* Helps with instant, automatic assessment and feedback, working on building the tools for feedback
* Staff bill is the biggest proportion of budget - feedback
* Moodle has helped to provide standardisation of delivery tools etc.
* If you want to use a blog in your teaching, you must use OU-blog (ditto OU wiki)

* JN asked OU (UK)'s approach to Intellectual Property and [[wikipedia:Open educational Resources|OERS]]
** OU owns IP - allows staff some use
** OU puts some materials as OERs?? (unclear answer - Denise's response seemed to indicate that OU is largely protective of its teaching materials with some limited sharing)

==Questions I wanted to ask==
* It sounds like OU is increasingly using Moodle for other functions, such as for administrative tasks, staff working groups etc.. Is there a risk of over-Moodlisation - as opposed to say using other fit-for-purpose tools/platforms?
