This page is about lesson settings that can be changed by the teacher when they view the lesson in edit mode.  There are excellent help files once Lesson settings window has been open.  In creating a new lesson, Moodle will first show the lesson settings page.  At any point in the design or compliation of the lesson, it is possible (almost desirable in some cases) to edit the lesson settings.

After reviewing the lesson settings and saving them, you(the teacher) will jump back to the page list with its insert, edit, move or delete potentials.  
This page explains the settings involved when first creating a lesson.
To add a lesson to your Moodle course page:
*With the editing turned on, in the section you wish to add your lesson, click the "Add an activity or resource" link (or, if not present, the "Add an activity" drop down menu) and choose ''Lesson'' All settings may expanded by clicking the "Expand all" link top right.


There is some difference between  Moodle 1.5 and 1.6 with additional settings.  Please note that the settings group catagory is shown.

* For lessons containing '''only''' ''Content pages'', once a lesson has been taken to the end, if that same lesson is re-taken, the progress bar will not be "reset", i.e. it will show a 100% progress from page 1!


This puts a time limit on the lesson. Students are shown a JavaScript counter and the time is recorded in the database. Due to the inconsistent nature of JavaScript, the timer does not evict a student from the lesson when the time is up, however a question answered after the time limit is not counted. The time in the database is checked each time a student submits a question.
* For lessons containing ''Question pages'' and set to "Re-take" '''Yes''', the progress bar is always "reset" at 0% upon re-take.


===The Maximum Number of Answers / Branches in a Lesson===
* Note that the Lesson Progress bar only works correctly for lessons with a "straightforward" navigation, such as page 1 -> page  2 -> page n -> end of lesson. It is not guaranteed to work with pages "jumping all over the place".


This value determines the maximum number of answers the teacher can see and use when editing a lesson or a page. The default value is 4.  This is a useful feature in older versions of Moodle that have no collapsed view.  This value can reduce the number of screens a teacher might see in the lesson edit mode.

Choose this to let students see their score as they work through the lesson.
This parameter also sets the maximum number of Branches that can be seen by the teacher in a Branch Table.

Choose this if you want to show a list of the pages in the Lesson so a student can see what is coming up.
It is safe to change the value of this parameter at any time. It only effects what the teacher sees, not the data. For example, a teacher starting to enter a series of multiple choice questions with 6 answers, might set this value to 6.  Then when the teacher starts to enter a series of questions with 2 answers,  they might set this value to 2 because they don't need to see 4 blank answers for every question in the design phase.
===Minimum grade to display menu===
 
Choose this if you want the student to go through the lesson once and get a grade before they can (on review) see and navigate through all the different pages.
In a similar manner, changing the value does not effect what the student sees when they view a branch page, nor does it change previous information put in by the teacher.

This will allow you to put a numerical point value on each answer. Answers may have negative values or positive values. Imported questions will automatically be assigned 1 point for correct answers and 0 for incorrect, though you may change this after the import.
 
===Maximum Grade===
 
This value determines the maximum grade which can be awarded in the lesson. The range is 0 to 100%. This value can be changed at any time during the lesson. Any change has an immediate effect in the Grades page and on the grades shown to the students in various lists. If the grade is set to 0 the Lesson does not appear in any of the Grades pages.
 
===User can re-take===
 
This setting determines whether the students can take the lesson more than once or only once. The teacher may decide that the lesson contains material which the students ought to know thoroughly. In which case repeated viewing of the lesson should be allowed. If, however, the material is used more like an exam then the students should not be allowed to re-take the lesson.
 
When the students are allowed to re-take the lesson, the grades shown in the Grades page are either their average grade over the re-takes or their best grade for the lesson. The next parameter determines which of these two grading alternatives is used.
 
Note that the Question Analysis always uses the answers from the first tries of the lesson, subsequent re-takes by students are ignored.


By default this option is Yes, meaning that students are allowed to re-take the lesson. It is expected that only in exceptional circumstances will this option be set to No.
Slideshow height, width and background colour are set for the whole site by an administrator in ''Settings > Site administration > Plugins > Activity modules > Lesson''.

Here you can set the default number of answer boxes available when you add your question or content pages. For instance, if you are only going to use True/False, you would only need 2. You can change this at any time so it's not crucial.
===Use default feedback===
Choose this if you want to show a set phrase regardless of their answer. If you have set your own default feedback such as "well done; correct" or "never mind; better luck next time" etc it will appear. If you have not, then Moodle's default feedback will appear.


When students are allowed to re-take the lesson, this option allows the teacher to show the grade for the lesson in, for example, the Grades page, as either the mean, this is average, of the grades over the first and subsequent tries or as the grade from the students' best tries.

This value determines the maximum number of attempts a Student has in answering any of the questions in the lesson. Once reached, the student does not see the question again.
*When 'provide an option to try again' is set to No, students will be able to retake the question as many times as it is set here, with a score penalty.


The default value is 5. Smaller values may discourage the student from trying different answers about a question. Larger values may lead to frustration when the student "does not get it".  For example with a short answer or numerical question, the student is not given an opportunity to try different answer choices. This value provides an escape route to the next page in the lesson.  
*When 'provide an option to try again' is set to Yes, then students will be able to retake the question as many times as it set here without a score penalty. In this case an extra dialogue appears.


Setting this value to 1 gives the students just single chance to answer each question. This would be similar to a question in the Quiz module.
Consequently when the relevant jump 'this page' is used in wrong answer while the 'provide an option to try again' is set to No and 'maximum number of attempts' is set to 1, a student that will answer wrongly will be moved into the next page, since he/she has the change to try the question just once.  


Note: this value is student global parameter and that it applies to all the questions in the lesson regardless of their type. However it does not apply to teachers checking of questions or navigating through the lesson. Checking the number of attempts relies on values stored in the database and question attempts by teachers are not recorded. The teacher should after all know the answers!

The usual action is to follow the jump as specified in the answer. In most cases this will probably show the Next Page of the lesson. The student is taken through the lesson in a logical way, beginning at the start and ending at the end.

However, the lesson module can also be used as a type of Flash Card assignment. The student is shown some information (optional) and a question in basically a random order. There is no set beginning and no set end. Just a set of Cards shown one after another in no particular order.

This option allows two very similar variants of Flash Card behaviour. The option "Show an unseen page" never shows the same page twice (even if the student did not answer the question associated with the Card/Page correctly). The other non-default option "Show an unanswered page" allows the student to see pages that may have appeared before but only if they answered the associated question wrongly.
===Practice lesson===
Use this if you don't need the lesson to be scored/graded but just need students to work through some pages. Set this to Yes to have the same ungraded type Lesson in earlier versions of Moodle.


In either of these Flash Card-type lessons the teacher can decide to use either all the Cards/Pages in the lesson or just a (random) sub-set. This is done through the "Number of Pages (Cards) to show" parameter.

Choose this if you want your students to be able to do the lesson more than once.
Created in 1.7, this will not show the student any automatic feed back. When sent to NO it moves the student to the next page if no responce has been entered by the teacher.
:Note that this setting only applies to lessons containing ''Question pages''. Lessons consisting '''only''' of ''Content pages'' can be re-taken even if 'Re-takes allowed' is set to ''No''.
===The Minimum Number of Questions in a Lesson===
====Handling of re-take====
This value determines the '''minimum''' number of questions that will be used to calculate a student's score.  It does not force students to answer that many questions in the lesson.  When a lesson contains one or more [[Adding a branch table| branches]], the teacher should normally set this parameter.  
If you allow your students to re-take the lesson, then decide here if the grade for all lesson attempts is the mean or the maximum.
 
For example, setting this parameter to 20, will ensure that grades are given as though the students have seen at least this number of questions. Take the case of a student who only looks at a single branch in a lesson with 5 pages and answers all the associated questions correctly. This student then choose to end the lesson (assuming there is that option in the "top level"Branch Table, a reasonable enough assumption). If this parameter was set to 0 their grade would be 5 out of 5, that is 100%. However, with it set to 20 their grade would be reduced to 5 out of 20, that is 25%. In the case of another student who goes through all the branches and sees, say, 25 pages and answers all but two of the questions correctly, then their grade would be 23 out of 25, that is 92%.
 
If this parameter is used, the teacher might want to add  a statement on the opening page of the lesson.  For example, if the teacher set the value to 20 they might say:
 
:In this lesson you are expected to attempt at least ''20'' questions. You can attempt more if you wish. However, if you attempt less than ''20'' questions your grade will be calculated as though you attempted ''20''.
 
When this parameter is set to a value more than 0,  students are told how many questions they have attempted and how many they are expected to attempt.
 
===Number of Pages (Cards) to Show===
 
This parameter is only used in Flash Card type lessons. The default value is zero which means that all the Pages/Cards are shown in a lesson. Setting this parameter to a non-zero value shows that number of pages. After that number of Page/Cards have been shown the end of lesson is reached and the student is shown their grade.
 
If this parameter is set to a number greater than the number of pages in the lesson then the end of the lesson is reached when all the pages have been shown.

This enables the display of the lesson as a slide show, with a fixed width, height, and custom background color. A CSS based scroll bar will be displayed if the width or height of the slide is exceeded by the content of a page. Questions will 'break out' of the slide show mode, only pages (branch tables) will be shown in a slide by default. Buttons labeled with the lang default for "Next" and "Back" will be shown at the far right and left of the slide if that option is chosen on the page. Other buttons will be centered below the slide.  You can also decide on the width, height and the background colour of the slide show.

Lesson administration settings

This page explains the settings involved when first creating a lesson. To add a lesson to your Moodle course page:

TIP: Leave this off if you are using essay questions. 

Maximum Number of Attempts

  • Decide here how many times you want students to be able to attempt each question. When they reach the maximum, they will be taken automatically to the next page.

Note: this setting works in combination with the above setting, or independently.

  • When 'provide an option to try again' is set to No, students will be able to retake the question as many times as it is set here, with a score penalty.
  • When 'provide an option to try again' is set to Yes, then students will be able to retake the question as many times as it set here without a score penalty. In this case an extra dialogue appears.

Consequently when the relevant jump 'this page' is used in wrong answer while the 'provide an option to try again' is set to No and 'maximum number of attempts' is set to 1, a student that will answer wrongly will be moved into the next page, since he/she has the change to try the question just once.

Action after a Correct Answer

Choose here where you want a student to be sent to if they get a question right. See Using Lesson for more details on this setting. The options are:

    • the next part of the Lesson (default setting)
    • a random, unexpected page
    • a random page which they have not yet answered.

Number of pages to show

You only need this if you have set "Action after a correct answer" to show an unseen or unanswered page. Otherwise, all pages will be seen

Grade

The Restrict access and Activity completion settings are visible if Conditional activities and Activity completion have been enabled in the site and the course.

Site administration settings

The lesson module has additional settings which may be changed by an administrator in Administration > Site administration > Plugins > Activity modules > Lesson.

Slideshow width

Sets the width of the slideshow only when this feature is enabled in a Lesson's "Change settings".

  • Variable name: lesson_slideshowwidth, Default 640.

Slideshow height

Sets the height of the slideshow only when this feature is enabled in a Lesson's "Change settings".

  • Variable name: lesson_slideshowheight, Default 480.

Slideshow background colour

Background colour to for the slideshow if it is enabled.

  • Variable name: lesson_slideshowbgcolor, Default #FFFFFF.

Popup window width

Sets the width of the popup displayed for a linked media file

  • Variable name: lesson_mediawidth, Default 640.

Popup window height

Sets the height of the popup displayed for a linked media file

  • Variable name: lesson_mediaheight, Default 480.

Show close button:

Displays a close button as part of the popup generated for a linked media file

  • Variable name: lesson_mediaclose, Default No.

Number of high scores displayed

NOTE: This feature is currently broken. Its future is being discussed in MDL-49581

Maximum number of answers

Default maximum number of answers per page for site

  • Variable name: lesson_maxanswers, Default: 4.

Action after correct answer

The default action to take after a correct answer

  • Variable name: lesson_defaultnextpage, Default: Normal - follow lesson path
