Courses can be restored from a backup made by Moodle. Course backups are usually stored in the backupdata folder within the course files folder. There is a link next to every course backup that says restore. Each version of Moodle has its own slightly different process for restoring. Generally speaking a backup may be restored several ways. It can
*Copy over the data in any course, or
*Add the backup to any course, or
*Create a new course that is a duplicate,
*Offers option to include student data and/or course files.

The backup and restore process is a common way of moving or, copying specific courses from one Moodle to another.

Version 1.6 and later offers more options in the backup and restore process. Backup restore has a more detailed description of the 1.6 process. It is possible to backup and/or restore specific course resources and activities. For example, a teacher can backup the entire course, then restore only Lesson 1 with student data, Lesson 4 without student data and a forum with student data, to a new or existing course.

This selective restore process is similar to the Import feature in the course administration block.
From the student perspective, a numerical question looks just like a short-answer question. The difference is that numerical answers are allowed to have an accepted error. This allows a continuous range of answers to be set.

For example, if the answer is 30 with an accepted error of 5, then any number between 25 and 35 will be accepted as correct.

Numerical questions, in Moodle 1.6 and earlier, can also have case-insensitive non-numerical answers. This is useful whenever the answer for a numerical question is something like N/A, +inf, -inf, NaN etc.

There is a numerical question type included in the embedded / CLOZE question type which functions similarly to this one.

From Moodle 1.7 onwards, questions may have different answers with different levels of accuracy. That lets you create questions like "What is a root of x^2 - 3x + 2?" and award different levels of credit depending on the accuracy of the answer.

In Moodle 1.7 text answers are no longer allowed - Short-Answer question type should be used instead.
#Give the question a descriptive name - this allows you to identify it in the question bank.
#Enter a question in the 'question text' field. This can include an equation - Moodle has a couple of text filters that allow you to type an equation and have it properly typeset when displayed. The Algebra filter is very good for writing common mathematical expressions in a simple way. More complicated expressions may be written using the filter. Filters (administrator) contains information for administrators on how to enable these filters. Alternatively, select an image to display if you want to add a picture to the question.
#Select an image to display if you want to add a picture to the question. For the student, it appears immediately after the question text and before the choices.
#Set the 'default question grade' (i.e. the maximum number of marks for this question).
#Set the 'Penalty factor' (see Penalty factor below).
#Moodle 1.7+: If you wish, add general feedback. This is text that appears to the student after he/she has answered the question.
#Now enter the first accepted answer(s). Note: Floating point numbers, e.g. 23.4, may also be written as 23,4 or 2.34E+1.
#Enter an accepted error for this answer. This is the range above or below the answer that Moodle will accept as a match. For example, if the correct answer is 5, but you will accept 4 or 6 as answers, your accepted error is 1.
#Enter a grade for this answer.
#Enter feedback for the accepted answer. This is the text that the student will see if they enter a number within the accepted error of the answer.
#Repeat for each of the answers you want to accept. Moodle 1.7+: You can provide feedback for all wrong answers by using a wildcard, i.e. the asterisk character (*), as an answer with grade 'None'.
#Units can also be specified. For example, if you enter a unit of 'cm' here, and the accepted answer is 15, then the answers '15cm' and '15' are both accepted as correct. You can also specify a multiplier. So, if your main answer was 5500 with unit W, you can also add the unit kW with a multiplier of 0.001. This means that the answers '5500', '5500W' or '5.5kW' would all be marked correct. Note that the accepted error is also multiplied, so an allowed error of 100W would become an error of 0.1kW.
#Click 'Save changes' to add the question to the category.

Tips and tricks
Moodle provides teachers with a lot of flexibility when creating this common question type. You can create single-answer and multiple-answer questions, include pictures, sound or other media in the question and/or answer options (by inserting HTML) and weight individual answers. Remember that Lesson module questions behave differently.
Multiple-answer questions
These questions types in a quiz allow one or more answers to be chosen by providing check boxes next to the answers. If the total grade is negative then the total grade for this question will be zero.
#Write your first answer in the Choice 1 text field. Inserting HTML into this area also makes it possible to add an image or a sound file.
#Select a grade percentage for the answer. This is the percentage of the total points for the question that selecting this response is worth. You can select negative percentages as well as positive percentages. So, selecting a correct response in a multiple answer question may give you 50% of the possible points, while selecting a wrong answer may take away 10%. Note that in a multiple-answer question, the grades must add up to 100%.
#If you wish, you can add feedback for each response. It may be a bit more work, but it’s good practice to tell the students why each answer is right or wrong using the feedback area. If students know why an answer is right or wrong, they can analyse their own thinking and begin to understand why an answer is correct. Your feedback will only be displayed if you select Show Feedback in the quiz body options.
#Fill in the rest of the response choices in the rest of the form. Any unused areas will be ignored.
#Moodle 1.7+: Fill in the overall feedback fields if you wish.
#Select the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the screen.

Penalty factor
The 'penalty factor' only applies when the question is used in a quiz using adaptive mode - i.e. where the student is allowed multiple attempts at a question even within the same attempt at the quiz. If the penalty factor is more than 0, then the student will lose that proportion of the maximum grade upon each successive attempt. For example, if the default question grade is 10, and the penalty factor is 0.2, then each successive attempt after the first one will incur a penalty of 0.2 x 10 = 2 points.

Overall feedback
Moodle 1.7 includes options for adding overall feedback for correct/partially correct/incorrect responses. This is particularly useful for multiple-response questions, where it is difficult to control what feedback students see just using the answer-specific feedback.

So, when the student submits the question, they will see the answer-specific feedback next to the option(s) they selected, the overall feedback in a box below the options, and if applicable, the general feedback underneath everything else.

Lesson module multiple choice questions
This page was created for the Quiz module. A multiple choice or multianswer question type in the Lesson module looks the same to the student but is very different in the teacher's edit mode. Lesson Multiple Choice and multianswer questions are handled differently by a teacher.

Some examples: Quiz has a more robust scoring system that is similar to "Custom Scoring" in the Lesson module. Even with custom scoring turned on, Lesson will not give percentage credit of a question's score for an answer. And students must select all the correct answers to receive any credit for the multianswer question in the Lesson module.

Questions
In a short answer question, the student types in a word or phrase in response to a question (that may include a image). Answers may or may not be case sensitive. The answer could be a word or a phrase, but it must match one of your acceptable answers exactly. It's a good idea to keep the required answer as short as possible to avoid missing a correct answer that's phrased differently.

The Quiz and Lesson modules both have short answer question types. The analysis of the question given below works for both modules. However there is another analysis type available for Lesson which is not available in a Quiz (see note below).

Question set-up
#Select the question category
#Give your question a descriptive name.
#Create the question text. If you're using the HTML Editor, you can format the question just like a word processing document.
#*Tip: if the answer is intended to fill a gap in the text, use underscores to indicate where the gap is.
#Select an image to display if you want to add a picture to the question (see step 4 in Multiple Choice question type for more detail).
# Set the 'default question grade' (i.e. the maximum number of marks for this question).
# Set the 'Penalty factor' (see Penalty factor below).
# Moodle 1.7+: If you wish, add general feedback. This is text that appears to the student after he/she has answered the question.
#Choose whether the answers are case-sensitive. Case sensitivity can be tricky where capitalization is important. Will you accept george washingtion as well as George Washington as an answer?
#Next, fill in the answers you will accept. You could give common misspellings partial credit with this option. If the "Case sensitive" option is selected, then you can have different scores for "Word" or "word". Use wildcards to allow for variants on a word.
#Add grade for each answer.
#Create feedback for any and all answers. This will appear if the student enters that answer.
#*Note: It is good practice to add a single wild card * for the last answer, so you can create a feedback response and a score for all other answers students might have.
#Click Save Changes to add the question to the category.

Wildcard usage
You can use the asterisk character (*) as a wildcard to match any series of characters. For example, use <code>ran*ing</code> to match any word or phrase starting with ran and ending with ing. If you really do want to match an asterisk then use a backslash like this: <code>\*</code>

If you want one question with the two answers fuel and oxygen, you ought to be able to limit the number of variants by writing <code>fuel*oxygen 100%</code>. This would accept "fuel oxygen", "fuel, oxygen", "fuel; oxygen", "fuel and oxygen", "fuel & oxygen" "fuel oxygen", "fuel und oxygen" "fuel&&oxygen". It would even accept "fuel or oxygen", "fuel but not oxygen" "fuel|oxygen" which might not be so good but you can never be completely safe!

Here are some answers and scores for a question "What does a rocket burn?".<br>
#<code>oxygen*fuel</code> with a score 100% <br>
#<code>*fuel*</code> with a score 50%<br>
#<code>*oxygen*</code> with a score 50%<br>
#<code>*air*</code> with a score 40% <br>
#<code>* </code> with a score of 0%<br>

The order of the answers is important. The answers are evaluated from 1st to last. When a match is found the process stops. If no match is found the question is scored wrong and the general response is used. It is a good practice to put a wild card as the last answer so the evaluation process knows what to do when nothing above it matches.

Without wildcards, the answers are compared exactly, so be careful with your spelling!

Feedback for wrong answers
When you wish to have short answer type questions, you naturally have a limited number of variations that would be acceptable. So in case you wish to give a feedback in case of a wrong answer, you must spell out the right answers exactly and then use * as a final answer which will have grade as zero, and feedback will be the one for wrong answer.

Effectively, ANYTHING other than the specific answers mentioned by you will be treated as this option due to wildcard and will be deemed wrong; it'll give 0 marks and show the feedback for a wrong answer.

Here is an example:

What is a rabbit?

answer1: animal<br />
feedback: right<br />
grade: 100%

answer2: mammal<br />
feedback: right<br />
grade: 100%

answer3: vertebrate<br />
feedback: right<br />
grade: 100%

answer4: *<br />
feedback: ouch! that was wrong<br />
grade: none

Remember: you cannot do negative marking in this type and ANYTHING other than your right answer will be treated as option 4 due to the wildcard and given that feedback and zero marks.

Tip: Prototype your questions
You may like to prototype your short answer questions to catch common acceptable answers you hadn't thought of. Start out by creating a few acceptable answers, then include the question in a quiz for no points. Be sure to tell students you are testing a new question. Once the quiz is over, review students' answers and add their acceptable answers to the list.

Lesson module note
Starting with Moodle 1.6 in the Lesson module, there are two different student answer analysis systems available for the Short Answer type of question: the simple system is used by default. The second type only available in Lesson Module is called "Regular Expressions". See Short answer analysis for a description of the new type, with examples.

Questions
Matching questions have a content area and a list of names or statements which must be correctly matched against another list of names or statements. For example "Match the Capital with the Country" with the two lists "Canada, Italy, Japan" and "Ottawa, Rome, Tokyo". In the Quiz Module, each match is equally weighted to contribute towards the grade for the total question.

Question set-up in Question bank
#Select the question category
#Give the question a descriptive name - this allows you to identify it in the question bank.
#Enter a question stem in the 'question text' field to tell the students what they are matching.
#Select an image to display if you want to add a picture to the question. For the student, it appear immediately after the question text and before the choices.
#Set the 'default question grade' (i.e. the maximum number of marks for this question).
#Set the 'Penalty factor' (see grading below).
#Moodle 1.7+: If you wish, add general feedback. This is text that appears to the student after he/she has answered the question.
#Check the 'shuffle' box if you want the answers in the drop-down menus to be shuffled. Note: The Quiz display setting must also be set to shuffle within a questions for this to work.
#For the first matching item, enter the question and a matching answer.
#Fill in at least three questions and answers. You can enter as many as 10 items (or more - see 'See also' below). You can provide extra wrong answers by giving an answer with a blank question.
#Click Save changes to add the question to the category.

Grading
* Each sub-question is equally weighted to contribute towards the grade for the total question. For example a student who correctly matches 3 of the 4 possible matches will receive 3/4 or 75% of the total possible score for that question.
* The 'penalty factor' only applies when the question is used in a quiz using adaptive mode - i.e. where the student is allowed multiple attempts at a question even within the same attempt at the quiz. If the penalty factor is more than 0, then the student will lose that proportion of the maximum grade upon each successive attempt. For example, if the default question grade is 10, and the penalty factor is 0.2, then each successive attempt after the first one will incur a penalty of 0.2 x 10 = 2 points.

Repeated entries
It is possible to have repeated entries in one of the lists but care should be taken to make the repeats identical. For example "Identify the type of these creatures" with the lists "Ant, Cow, Dog, Sparrow" and "Insect, Mammal, Mammal, Bird".

Ordered questions
In the Quiz module, it is possible for both the question list and the answer list to be shuffled. The answer list is always shuffled. The "shuffle within questions" must be "Yes" as a quiz setting under Display AND the shuffle question box must be check on the individual question.

Consider the question "Match the letter with its position in the alphabet" with the question list "1, 2, 3, 4" and answer list "A, B, C, D". The answer list is always shuffled for each student in the pull down list of the possible matches. However, only when both the quiz and individual question shuffles are turned on, will the question list be shuffled to something like "2,4,1,3".

Version differences
*From Moodle 1.7 onwards, there can be more answers than questions. This makes it harder for the student if they do not know the right match. The extra answers are added by leaving the question field blank.

Lesson Module matching questions
Matching questions are also used in the Lesson Module. However, while they look similar to the student, they are different for the teacher. Quizes don't have jumps.

*In the Lesson Module, all matches must be right for the question to be scored as correct.
*What is called the question list in a Quiz, does not shuffle in the Lesson Module. In the earlier example, A, B, C , D will always be in that order and 1,2,3,4 will always be shuffled in the Lesson Module.
*Lesson Module has an "answer" and a "matching answer" instead of a "question" and "answer".
*In Lesson Module there has to be matching pairs. It is not possible to have 4 items in one list to match with 1 of 5 items in another list. Both lists will be equal in their number.

Ordered questions in Lesson Module
In the Lesson Module, unlike Multiple choice questions or the Quiz Module, the question list is always the same order and the choices are shown in a random order.

Lesson Module version differences
*In Moodle 1.5, when creating this type of question the items for the first list go into the Answer boxes and items for the second list go into the Response boxes. Once created a more sensible labeling scheme is shown. When the student successfully matches the items the jump on the first answer is used. An unsuccessful answer jumps to the page on the second answer. The question does not support custom responses, the student is told how many matches are correct or if all the matches are correct.
*In Moodle 1.6, when the student successfully matches the items, the Correct answer jump is used. An unsuccessful answer jumps to Wrong answer jump. The question supports only 2 response (= feedback) messages: the Correct response message is displayed if all matches are correct, and the Wrong response message otherwise.

Tips and tricks
*Matching questions look better on screen if you put the longer piece of text in the question and not the match. For example, when vocabulary matching put the single word in the match and the definition sentence in the question. Otherwise the drop down for long questions will be awkward to use and difficult to read.
*Matching questions in a Lesson module are slightly different than in a Quiz module when the teacher is in edit mode. For example, there are scoring differences and a quiz does not use jumps.

Question grading
The essay question will not be assigned a grade until it has been reviewed by a teacher and manually graded. Until that happens, the student's grade will be 0.

To grade a student's answer in a quiz, use the manual grading tab on the Results section of the quiz. When manually grading an essay question, the grader is able to enter a custom comment in response to the essay and assign a score for the essay.

Essay questions in a Lesson
To grade lesson essay questions, first click on the name of the lesson in your course page. If there are essay questions to be graded, there will be a link saying "Grade essay questions". This link will open a screen showing how many ungraded essay questions there are. Ungraded essay questions will be in listed in red. Click the link for the essay you wish to grade.

The essay grading screen shows the title of the question, the student's essay response, and a place you can write optional comments and give the essay a score. Click the Submit grade button to record your score and comments. Graded questions will be displayed in green. Repeat the process to finish grading.
You may add a variety of different types of questions in the Quiz and Lesson modules. This page is about Quiz question types, some will be similar to Lesson questions types, which are fewer in number and function differently. The standard quiz question types are listed below with brief descriptions. Please use the links on the right side of this page to find more detailed information about standard questions types that are found in both modules.

Standard question types
Calculated
Calculated questions offer a way to create individual numerical questions by the use of wildcards that are substituted with individual values when the quiz is taken. More on the Calculated question type

Description
This is not a real question. It simply prints some text (and possibly graphics) without requiring an answer. This can be used to provide some information to be used by a subsequent group of questions, for example. More on the Description question type

Essay
In response to a question (that may include an image) the respondent writes an answer in essay format. More on the Essay question type

Matching
A list of sub-questions is provided, along with a list of answers. The respondent must "match" the correct answers with each question. More on the Matching question type

Embedded Answers (Cloze Test / Gap Fill)
These very flexible questions consist of a passage of text (in Moodle format) that has various answers embedded within it, including multiple choice, short answers and numerical answers. More on the Embedded Answers question type

Multiple Choice
In response to a question (that may include a image) the respondent chooses from multiple answers. There are two types of multiple choice questions - single answer and multiple answer. More on the Multiple Choice question type

Short Answer
In response to a question (that may include a image), the respondent types a word or phrase. There may several possible correct answers, with different grades. Answers may or may not be sensitive to case. More on the Short Answer question type

Numerical
From the student perspective, a numerical question looks just like a short-answer question. The difference is that numerical answers are allowed to have an accepted error. This allows a continuous range of answers to be set. More on the Numerical question type

Random Short-Answer Matching
From the student perspective, this looks just like a Matching question. The difference is that the sub-questions are drawn randomly from Short Answer questions in the current category. More on the Random Short-Answer Matching question type

True/False
In response to a question (that may include a image), the respondent selects from two options: True or False. More on the True/False question type

Third-party question types
Besides the standard question types that are part of the core Moodle distribution, there are question type plugins contributed by the community.

Drag and Drop
Please see the Drag and Drop question tutorial for more information.

Molecule design
The Java Molecular Editor question type allows you to ask students to design and submit a molecular structure.

Opaque
Opaque is a system for using questions from other systems that support the Opaque protocol within Moodle quizzes. This question type is the Moodle end of that bridge. It can be downloaded from http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?d=13&rid=798. See the Opaque question type tutorial for more information.

RQP
RQP was an earlier attempt to do the same thing that Opaque does, but as of Moodle 1.6 it did not work. It used to be in Moodle core, but in Moodle 1.9 it was moved to be a third-part question type. It is probably now only of historical interest.

Regular Expression Short Answer
Like the Short Answer question, the RegExp Short Answer question expects the student to answer an "open" question with a word or a short phrase. However, using so-called regular expressions gives you access to a more powerful system for analysing the student's answers and thus providing more adapted feedback messages.
The Regular Expression Short Answer question type is available for Moodle 1.6 from the Modules and plugins database.

Versions and questions
*Some question types can be exported in version 1.6 to a lesson through use of a GIFT or XML Moodle file.

Question bank
Moodle 1.6 created "Question bank", a database of questions for the quiz module. This database will be available for both quiz and lesson modules in 2.0.

Questions
This feature allows a teacher to create, preview, and edit questions in a course question bank, a database of questions. These questions can then be used in Quizzes and through the export process in a Lesson. The teacher enters the question bank by creating or editing a quiz activity or through the Administration block

The initial Question Bank page has tabs that allow you (as teacher) to edit questions, categories, import questions and export questions.

Select a category
Questions are organised into categories. Initially each course has only one category called "Default". It is good practice to create more categories to organize your questions. You can create a hierarchy of categories because you can create subcategories inside parent categories. To add or edit categories click on the "Categories" tab.

The question editing screen shows the questions from the currently selected category. You choose this category from the Category: drop-down menu. Using the tick box below that menu you determine whether to also show the questions from all subcategories.

Categories are shared in contexts since Moodle 1.9
Since Moodle 1.9 there are separate question category trees in each different 'context' in which questions are shared. The contexts available to you depend on whether you access the question bank from an activity or from a course and depend on the permissions assigned you for access to questions. See Question contexts for more information on these contexts.

Add a new question
# Click the Questions tab to access the Question Bank page, if not there already.
# From the Category drop-down menu, select a category you want to add a question to.
# The page will change to show the questions already in that category
# Select the question type you want to create from the Create new question drop-down menu.
# Fill in the form for the question type you are creating. Each question type has its own form and has its own options.
# Click Save Changes at the bottom of the form.

Preview, Edit, Delete, and Move
The first column in the list of questions contains a number of icons and a selection box.

Clicking on the Preview icon will open a preview window in which you can test the question. The Edit icon allows you to edit the question via the same form that you used to create it. The Delete icon deletes the question, provided it is not already in use in some activity. The selection box allows you to select a subset of questions that you can then move to another category using the controls below the list of questions.

As of Moodle 1.9 the move icon allows you to move one question at a time.

Tips and tricks
*Put the answer into the question name so you can quickly see the answers when students are asking for answers. This is especially useful if you're dealing with large sets of questions! (No option yet for viewing category or answer of question in the list of questions.)
*Export questions in GIFT or Moodle XML formats, then import them into a Lesson. (Future versions of Moodle will make Question bank available to both Lesson and Quiz activities.)
*Remember that while some of the same question types can be found in both the Quiz and Lesson modules, they can be very different. Scoring and grading each student's choice is more robust in a Quiz. On the other hand, each Lesson question answer also has a jump associated it.
*Use GIFT or other export modes to print questions and answers in a category. Hint, clever use of word processor macros, using search and replace, can tidy up a GIFT file for printing.
Moodle allows administrators, teachers and students to easily export calendars for backing up or inserting in calendar software.

There are two methods for exporting a calendar in Moodle.

To back up a calendar
* Click the "Export calendar" button located on the bottom of the calendar page
* Select the items you wish to back up (select "All events" to back up the entire calendar)
* Click "Export" when you are ready to export

Note: you can only export calendar events up to the next 60 days.

To copy a calendar
For use on a device such as a PDA, or to import a Moodle calendar into software such as Apple iCal, Microsoft Outlook, or Mozilla Thunderbird:

* Click on the orange "iCal" button located on the bottom of the calendar page
* Alternatively, when using "Export calendar" clicking on "Get calendar URL" will provide you with a URL which can be used with other calendar software to sync with a Moodle calendar

Note: you cannot select individual items to include in the exported file with iCal, all events will be included.

You can then import the exported calendar into your desired software.

Importing a Moodle calendar into Mozilla Thunderbird/Lightning
* Enter into calendar mode by clicking the Calendar icon at the bottom-right of the client
* Click Calendar -> Import... then locate the exported iCal file

Note: changing an event in Thunderbird/Lightning will not change the event in a Moodle calendar as well, you must do that yourself.

Subscribing to a calendar in Outlook 2007
If you use an Outlook 2007 calendar, you can have your Moodle calendar events overlaid on top (or placed side by side) by following these steps:

#Go to the calendar view in your Moodle install and find the orange ical icon at the bottom and right click it, choosing "copy link location".
#Open Outlook 2007 and go to Tools->account settings->internet calendars->new.
#Paste in the address you copied from Moodle.
#Click OK and close.
#You should now see another calendar available on the left hand calendar bar, underneath 'My Calendars'. Enable this and Outlook will update the calendar every time it opens.
#Right-click on the tabs to choose between 'side by side mode' and 'overlay mode'.
