Hot question enables students to post and vote questions so that teachers know what they are expecting. Teachers can then select the most popular questions, so they don't have to address every one.
This tool is especially useful for lecture flipping, where staff provide pre-class materials (such as readings or videos) to make better use of face to face teaching time. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flip_teaching
