In a Moodle User meeting here in Finland we talked about the possibility of translating strings directly from the user interface. Short texts are sometimes hard to translate without the user interface context. Locating the spots where the text is used can be cumbersome. Some web application have the option of translating strings "on the fly": when you see a screen with untranslated information, you could go into "translation mode" and then click on a string to translate it. Ajax could handle this quite unobtrusively, but it would require that the output functions produce the exact name and module of the string (as html tag attributes for example) that the Ajax translation functions can use. These extra strings make the pages heavier so they should be produced only in the "translation mode". --Samuli Karevaara 01:28, 29 April 2008 (CDT)

Would it be possible for the project to add a community translation? That means somebody translates part of the interface, some other translates other part, changes are submitted, some "editor" or "reviewer" accepts, or corrects, the translation, which is incorporated to local. People could offer alternative translations, accepted, or not, by reviewers. And all this translated pack is available to the public. Changes to the original (English) package should be noted by the system. Is this within the scope of this project?

:IMHO this is how the translation has been always going. You already have the editor - it is the current lang pack maintainer with the cvs access. And everybody with Moodle installation may create _local modifications and send them to the maintainer to be included. But AFAIK, people do not contribute too much... --David Mudrak 01:38, 8 May 2008 (CDT)

::Hi, David, thanks for your comments. Sorry for not being clear enough. The problem is to have a (unique) place where people could go and translate. Editors would enter in this Moodle with the "Community Translation Module" installed and validate or modify the contributions. We had a hack like this in place for an old version of Moodle (1.5, I think), and people from several parts of the country were quite motivated to contribute. Unfortunately we could not update the module to newer versions of Moodle. We have a rough description of requirements, in Portuguese, at http://aprender.unb.br/traducao/mod/wiki/view.php?id=1 --Leonardo Lazarte 01:53, 26 January 2009 (CST)
