I was researching outcomes and got here. This page needs some tender care for 2.x. It is all over the place talking about gradebook, categories, and APIs. I was trying to redefine the menu path buried in "Activity based grade items" and felt helpless and lost in my Settings > Grade administration menu system when I clicked on grades. Only one of many points. I suspect that all we need is a simple definition and I do not think mine is correct. For example I wanted to see an Outcome report and this page says a grade item can be an outcome or a summary of grades. Thus a grade item is indeed a measurement of something. It shows up as a column in the grade report according to its words. This page explains too much. I do use grades in quizzes on a regular basis.
