Talk:File system repository

Humm, good ideas and instructions here. Need to figure out what goes where and page naming for this new feature.

This is probably a good overall page, we probably can use a Template:Repositories that includes

• [[Repositories|Repository overview]] the template heading
• [[Manage repositories]] This is the equal to an activity's Add/edit page as Helen points out, probably content of this page
• Common repository settings - I am ignornat at the moment, are the settings for Utube the same as Google Docs (which I tried). Are we going to have seperate pages for those 15 plus Server, Private, and new?

Could be end of template here or go on with:

• • Server files(I think these things pop up on the site admin Plugin> Repository list if turned on.
  • Recent files
  • Upload a file
  • Private files
  • Other Standard repositories
  • Create a repository

This page and the template is for a site administrator but it will impact File picker.

Chris, thanks as always for your contributions. However, I'm not following your chain of thought here. Please note that File system repository configuration provides instructions for administrators needing to configure a file system repository. As far as I know, the instructions are complete! Also, I don't think we need a separate Manage repositories page in addition to Repositories. Let's try and keep things as simple as possible on one page! --Helen Foster 21:48, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

I know you like it simple but I am too thick headed to see simple straight away :) My thinking was the site admin will get to plugins>repositories. Then they are going to see "Manage repositories" and a list of all the repositories that happen to be active. So by my logic, this page should be called "Manage repositories" since that is the the language of the schema. That expands a bit on my logic which after dinner and a walk in the snow with K-9 does not seem logical based on the content of this page. I thought Repository was the new name for the file system.

Is this current? Recent releases seem to have changed the Site administration ► Plugins ► Repositories ► Manage repositories page. How does one easily create and activate a repository that is not on the default list without hacking code or if not an administrator? How do I control my uploading of files to a repository? How do I use those files when uploaded when I cannot access them? These are all questions that will be asked --Colin Fraser 00:58, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

I included a video link that is more helpful, given to me by Mary. What I did not realize was the "filesystem" did not refer to the Moodle file system, rather to a potential repository under the name of "filesystem" - pure semantics.--Colin Fraser 07:53, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

In response to the FAQ on this page the Higher Ed response is-- are you kidding!?

FAQ How do the files get into the File system repository? Get your person with server access to copy them in Set up FTP Is there a way to upload files to a File system repository from inside Moodle? If you are talking about core (vanilla) Moodle: not at the moment

... and you would like us all to move to Moodle 2.1? hmmm & what does not at the moment mean exactly?

This is key - faculty HAVE to be able to access & store here if they can create a repository here.

Remind me, what is wrong with uploading the files through the Moodle interface? E.g. Add ... -> File on the course page?

File system FAQ

I did this page a couple of weeks ago and now want to add another FAQ and realise (I think) the FAQ should be on a separate page. Is that correct? Should each repository have its own separate FAQ page and if so, how do I make the page for this filesystem here? WIll it be called File_system_repository_FAQ or what? I don't want to mess it up before it's started!--Mary Cooch 15:05, 27 August 2011 (WST)

How about adding more general FAQs to Repositories FAQ and specific FAQs to the repository page (as you've done for File system repository). If you end up with more than say three FAQs on a repository page then you could consider creating a new FAQ page e.g. 'File system repository FAQ'. --Helen Foster 17:39, 29 August 2011 (WST)
