Questions in the Lesson activity module are slightly different than in the Quiz module/Question bank modules. There are fewer types, Lesson questions use navigational Jumps (similar to HTML page links), can be scored differently and thus the question edit screens look very different. This page will discuss the mechanics of editing each type and rely upon linking so as not to duplicate efforts with information found about the Question bank types.

Editing question page(Lesson questions only) gives more detailed instructions for teachers.

Parts of a question

This is a quick review. Each Lesson question page has a title and a place where content is presented. The number of possiblestudent answers, teacher responses]], navigational Jumps and scores depends upon the question type and sometimes upon the Lesson settings.

Lesson question types

Multiple choice (single answer)

Multiple choice allow the student to select one answer out of many. Each answer can have a default response, a specific teacher response, or no responce shown to the student. It is similar with a jump associated with a student answer. There is a default jumps of "this page" or "next page", or the teacher may select another more specific page for each individual answer.

Multianswer

Multianswer is created using the Multiple choice form and by checking multianswer box. Multianswer allow the student to select more than one answer of many. In this Lesson question type, every correct answer must have both the same jump and the same response. And every wrong answer must have both the same jump and response. A correct answer is one that receives a positive score or advances the student forward in the edit order.

There is no partial credit given for selecting some of the correct answers in a lesson question of this type.

True-False

True-False is a type of Multiple choice, except it is limited to two possible answers. Please refer to the Multiple choice section.

Matching

In a matching question, students use a pulldown menu to come up with a match. The quiz page on Matching question types describes the process. There is one response and jump for getting the entire question correct and another response and jump when the match was wrong.

Numeric

A student is as to provide the results of a calculation in a single answer. The Quiz page about Numerical question types has more information about evaluation of the student answer. Like a short answer, the teacher uses the series of answer as a filter. With the last one being "all the other wrong answers".

Short answer

A student is asked to provide a single short answer. The teacher uses a series of answer/response/jump/score as a series of filters to evaluate the students short answer. Each one can have a unique response, jump and score. The last one in the series is always all the other wrong answers.

The Quiz page about Short-Answer question type has more information about evaluation of the student answer. Notice that Lesson has a different evaluation method than Quiz for this kind of question.

Please note: Starting with Moodle 1.6 in the Lesson module, there are two different student answer analysis systems available for the Short Answer type of question: the simple system is used by default. The second type only available in Lesson Module is called "Regular Expressions". See Short answer analysis for a description of the new type, with examples.

Short essay

In an lesson, after the student submits the answer for this type of question, the teacher must enter the lesson in edit mode to see a list of the student submitted essay questions for the teacher to manually grade.

Common features of a Lesson question page

A lesson question page has areas for title, content, answers, responses and jumps. Depending up the lesson settings, each answer maybe assigned a specific score. Each question type has a slightly different look. I

The content and answer blocks have the Page content with the HTML editor toolbar available.

Title

The title and content sections are the same as for a content page. The page title can be important identifier for a teacher when in edit mode.

  • TIP: Unlike a content page, the title will not appear to the student for a question page. Thus some teachers like to put the question in the title, others the answer.

Page contents

Page content is the place you may present information and/or put your question that will be answered by the student.

Moodle is very robust when it comes to placing content before a student. It has a friendly Text editor. See the Page content link for more detailed instructions.

  • TIP: In some learning situations, the teacher will put lesson material in the page content area of a question. At the bottom of the content section, they will put the question the student must answer. In other other questions, they will only put the question as the content.

Answers

Answers are the choices the student must make. Each of the question types has its own type of answer form.

The default answer for a question with all blank answers is "continue".

The order of the answers will appear to be random to the students. In other words, two students looking at the same question, will see the answers in a different order. Unlike a Quiz, there is no Lesson setting to turn off the "shuffle".

The teacher should not skip an answer. For example the 4th and 5th answers will not appear when the teacher enters possible answers for 1, 2, 4 and 5 but not 3.

  • TIP: Some teachers always enter the correct answer(s) first, since all the answers are always scrambled for the student. This makes it easier to proof read.

Answer formats

There are 4 choices of format. Moodle auto-format, HTML format, Markdown and Plain text. To enable the HTML format with the Text editor tool in the answer, the teacher should save the question and reenter it.

Response

Every question can have a default or teacher designed response for an answer. Different types of questions use the response field differently. There are the 4 text formats availabe similar to answer formats.

Please check the question type to see how responses are used for that type.

Jumps

Jumps determine what happens after a student makes a choice. Their use is the same as a Content page jump. Usually the default jump setting for a correct answer is to go to the "Next page" and a wrong answer to jump to "This page".

In the Multiple choice, numerical and short answer types, the default is to set the first answer's jump to "Next page".

TIP: Make sure you check lesson settings and flow control if the student seems to jump to an unexpected page. For example, these settings will determine what happens if you don't put in an answer or a jump for a correct answer.

Score

The score is used when "custom scoring" is turned on in the Lesson settings. It serves as the basis for grading each specific answer. It can be a positive or negative number. The default is 1 for a correct answer and 0 for a wrong answer.

  • TIP: Custom scoring does not have to be turned on to create a lesson score. See Lesson score for more information about how scores are used.

Add a question or cancel

Remember to display the Text editor tool in the answer, you will need to add the question then go back in and edit the question.
