How to restrict teachers views

How do I restrict a teacher to view only information about the groups that they are in? Where do I see the rights for a teacher? Bee Bell August 2007

Category example

Hi Helen, I notice that this page has 1.8, 1.9, FAQ, Teacher and Group categories at the bottom. If I understand things, the Teacher category should not be there because it is located at the bottom of the Group category index. Is this what you mentioned to me earlier? Trying to learn, but still don't feel comfortable with categories, except adding single category when there is none :) Best as always --chris collman 07:16, 2 October 2007 (CDT)

Yes, you're right - the teacher category can be deleted. --Helen Foster 07:56, 2 October 2007 (CDT)
Amazing when the dawn finally strikes Marblehead. LOL, how many sins have I created out of ignorance? <grin>. --chris collman 06:56, 3 October 2007 (CDT)

New question added

I have just added a question to this page about students selecting their own groups. The answer I have given is accurate as far as I know. Please add/correct if it is wrong, I have searched the documentation and the forums. There is some comment here that it may be arriving in 2.0. --Derek Chirnside 15:47, 8 May 2008 (CDT)

Hi Derek, thanks for adding a question. Perhaps you could also provide a link to a forum discussion describing a hack. Moodle 2.0 will hopefully include the group self-selection feature - see MDL-1310. --Helen Foster 02:08, 9 May 2008 (CDT)
Sorry, just noticed this. eg --Derek Chirnside 04:31, 14 May 2008 (CDT)

Changing the Sort order of groups

The answer to this question is outdated, and I'm not sure there's a way to do this in Moodle 1.9+:

How can I change the sort order of the participants?
The admin can change the "fullnamedisplay" which will affect the sort order of participants.
Have your admin go to:
Administration >> Configuration >> Variables
Then under "User," see "fullnamedisplay."
(Tested using Moodle 1.6.3.)

There is no "Administration >> Configuration >> Variables" option that I can find in 1.9, and I haven't been able to find a "Variables" menu anywhere else in the interface (which isn't to say that it isn't there, just that I'm having trouble locating it).

Good point. FYI, I did a search in MoodleDocs on fullnamedisplay and found a reference in Location of admin settings in 1.7. Went to (1.9.3) and found it under Security>Site Policies . It says
  • Full Name Formatfullnamedisplay
    • Default: First name + Surname

This defines how names are shown when they are displayed in full. For most mono-lingual sites the most efficient setting is the default "First name + Surname", but you may choose to hide surnames altogether, or to leave it up to the current language pack to decide (some languages have different conventions). Not that I completely understand how the "current language pack" will decide things :) It is amazing how much stuff is still hanging around for 1.5 and 1.6, Thanks --chris collman 05:35, 19 December 2008 (CST)

Assigning groups when enrolling students in a course

I just added a question and its answer based on my uncertainty when trying to place students in groups while enrolling them in a course via a flat file. pdm, 28 Mar 2010, Moodlerooms Assignment
