Moodle in Language Learning

The use of technology in language learning has the potential to engage and motivate students in authentic communicative activities. Moodle allows the language teacher to deliver to students resources such as videos, interviews and other materials in easy to access formats that can be made available for direct access or download purposes making Moodle a flexible way to teach students (transferring resources to iPod for example). In the last couple of years "mobile learning" has exploded with more students looking at ways to maximise their learning opportunities away from the traditional lecture/tutorial format. In this presentation Grazia Scotellaro will show some of the tools and resources recently developed for the ANU Italian program showing how Moodle can enhance language learning opportunities for students.

Lightwork: a Formative Assessment Tool useable with Moodle.

Lightwork is an open source Formative Assessment tool software development project. It is designed to lower the barrier to formative assessment and improve marking processes in bigger classes. It will integrate with Moodle.
Formerly known as F.A.T. the project is being rebadged in the 0.6 version due out on Friday 4th September 2009 (for one main reason). The new name is Lightwork. Currently under development, a fully functioning version of the software will be due out later in the year.

“Moodlising” staff: What worked for us

Staff at the University of Canberra have accepted Moodle in a very positive way, and we feel our training and support has contributed to this a big way.
Training and support included: Overviews, Workshops, Support Moodle sites, Moodle Mentors, Phone, Email, Drop-in times and appointments.
Some key points include:
- Over 467 staff members attended workshops on Moodle. Feedback has been very good.
- Over 550 staff members have attended workshops and/or had face to face training.
- The Moodle staff training site has been well used by our staff and others. The site displays 101,752 records with 78,117 records coming from guest users.
